Abstract

Southeast Asian countries have the possibility to have rainfall and number of extreme rainfall event change due to future climate variation. This paper proposed three extreme rainfall indices as a modification of climate extremes indices from CLIMDEX Project by researchers at the Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC), the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The proposed indices aim to be used as a parameter for observing extreme rainfall events in tropical monsoon countries. Eleven extreme precipitation indices from CLIMDEX Project and the three proposed extreme precipitation for tropical monsoon countries are systematically analyzed based on data of daily rainfall from meteorological stations in Bangkok and Jakarta. Mann-Kendall test was used to observe the trend of extreme rainfall. In general, the analysis of a total of 14 extreme indices show both Bangkok and Jakarta received more rainfall during rainy season and less rainfall during dry season. Specifically, a significant increasing trend of extreme rainfall indices (R60 and R80) was revealed using the proposed indices.

Abstract

A meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method that employs polygonal sub-domains constructed from several triangular patches rather than the typically used circular sub-domains is presented. Moving least-squares approximation is used to construct the trial displacements and linear, Lagrange interpolation functions are used to construct the test functions. An adaptive technique to improve the accuracy of approximate solutions is developed to minimize the computational cost. Variable domain of influence (VDOI) and effective stress gradient indicator (EK) for local error assessment are the focus of this study. Several numerical examples are presented to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed adaptive MLPG method. The results show that the proposed adaptive technique performs as expected that is refining the problem domain in area with high stress concentration in which higher accuracy is commonly required.

This paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation between predicted and practice concrete strength. The scope of the evaluation is the optimisation of the cement content for different concrete grades as a result of bringing the target mean value of tests cubes closer to the required characteristic strength value by reducing the standard deviation. Abstract

The Indonesian National Standard SNI 03-6389-2000 adapted the 1983 Singapore’s Handbook on Energy Conservation and limited the Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) of the building envelope to 45 Watt/m2. In 2008, the Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) shifted to Envelope Thermal Transfer Value (ETTV) value of 50 Watt/m2, while SNI 03-6389-2011 continues to use OTTV. This paper reviewed the new SNI 03-6389-2011 and compared it with BCA by calculating OTTV and ETTV of prismatic buildings with eight different shapes and building orientations, 11 Window to Wall Ratio, and 27 building envelope materials. This study also tested those variables to find the best building shape and orientation for an energy saver building. The result shows that ETTV (BCA) is stricter than OTTV (SNI 03-6389-2011) except the OTTV with black building envelope, while parallelogram shape building with North-South orientation is the best combination of energy saver building.

Abstract

This paper reviews the applicability of nine selected expressions in determining the equivalent value of the Manning coefficient of roughness. For this purpose, a prismatic 4m-long and 0.05m-wide trapezoidal-shape channel was constructed, namely the homogeneous channel and the composite channel. The homogeneous channel had the same surface lining, whereas the composite channel had two different surface linings. Four different lining materials were considered: plaster, small, medium, and large-sized aggregates. The homogeneous channel showed a reliable Manning coefficient prediction, provided that a uniform flow was achieved. The roughness of the composite channel can be predicted accurately by the nine expressions; the average was 0.96, with standard deviation of 11.13%. Out of the nine expressions, the expression that considers wet-perimeter as its main parameter showed the best estimate. The error was about 2% with standard deviation of 5.15%. This can be actually traced back to the limited width of the test channel, thereby increasing the role of wet perimeter.

Abstract

Stabilization is one of several methods to reduce swelling potential of expansive soils. In this experiment, a mix of lime (Ca) and rice husk ash (RHA) was used to stabilize the expansive soil. Sixty to eighty percent of lime content used to stabilize soil was replaced with rice husk ash. The result shows that the addition of 24% lime increases the strength of the soil up to 400%, if 60% of lime content is replaced with rice husk ash, the increase dropped to 300%. In general, a mix of 40% lime and 60% rice husk ash could reduce swelling potential, up to below 1%, and increase the strength of expansive soil. Optimum curing needed to achieve maximum strength of the mix is 14 days. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Stabilisasi adalah salah satu langkah untuk mengantisipasi sifat kembang susut pada tanah ekspansif. Pada penelitian ini digunakan campuran kapur (Ca) dan abu sekam padi (RHA) untuk menstabilisasi tanah expansif. Antara 60% sampai dengan 80% kandungan kapur untuk stabilisasi diganti dengan abu sekam padi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan 24% kapur dapat meningkatkan kekuatan tanah sampai 400%, sedangkan bila 60% dari kapur tersebut diganti dengan abu sekam, kekuatannya turun menjadi 300%. Secara umum, campuran 60% abu sekam padi dan 40% kapur sangat efektif untuk menurunkan potensi pengembangan (swelling), sampai di bawah 1%, dan meningkatkan kekuatan tanah (strength). Curing optimum yang diperlukan tanah campuran untuk mencapai kekuatan maksimum adalah 14 hari.

Abstract

Obituary: Professor Joseph Andy Soesilo Founder of Jurnal Dimensi - predecessor of Civil Engineering Dimension journal Djwantoro Hardjito & Benjamin Lumantarna | Civil Engineering Dimension  May 25, 2015 Professor Joseph Andy Soesilo passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the age of 71, in Tempe, Arizona, USA. Born in Blora, Central Java, Indonesia as Djwa Bian An, Andy came to Surabaya to pursue his tertiary education and received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Petra Christian University in 1972. He was in the first batch of students in the civil engineering department in the university in 1962. He got his masters degree from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, in 1976, and later on his Ph.D from the Department of Geography, Arizona State University, Tempe, USA in 1982. During his studentship, Andy was actively involed in student movement. Among others, he pioneered the student magazine GENTA in 1964, especially to promote the university to wider community. GENTA is still exist right now, and considered as one of the oldest student magazines in Indonesia. Andy was the first president of the student council in the university, in the era which was characterized with political turmoil in the country. He joined the Civil Engineering Department at Petra Christian University as lecturer in 1972, later becoming the Director of Student Affairs in the University from 1976-1977, and Director of Research and Community Outreach from 1977-1981. While at Petra Christian University (PCU), he made major contributions to the establishment of Jurnal Dimensi in 1980, a journal to publish scientific articles, particularly resulted from research carried out by PCU lecturers and scholars. This journal is the predecessor of the current Civil Engineering Dimension Journal and several other journals published by PCU. The establishment of Jurnal Dimensi was visionary and exemplary, as at that time publication of scientific articles has yet to become obligation to Indonesian lecturers. Until his last day, Andy has served as a member of the International Advisory Board of CED journal. In 1982, Andy moved to USA, to join the Arizona State University (ASU) as a Research Associate until 1988. For twenty years from 1988, Andy was affiliated with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) as an environmental planner. Following his retirement from ADEQ, He was still lecturing as an adjunct professor at Urban Planning Department at ASU. Together with several friends, he founded Persekutuan Kasih Kristus Arizona (PKKA), Inc., a foundation to help Indonesian Christian schools in the rural areas. Among his publications are ‘Site Remediation: Planning and Management’ (CRC Press, 1997) and ‘Hazardous Waste Planning’ (CRC Press, 1995). He supposed to present his paper entitled ‘The Role of Municipal WWTPs in Arizona’s Water Conservation’ in the coming ‘The Fifth Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum’ (EACEF-5) conference, to be held at Petra Christian University, Surabaya, Indonesia, from 15-18 September 2015. Andy, who had lived in Tempe, Arizona, USA, was the husband of Ursula (Lanny) Soesilo and the father of Irene and Stanley Soesilo.

Abstract

This paper described an investigation and evaluation which was carried out in the United Kingdom-UK, on the properties of masonry building block materials that incorporate waste materials, namely: steel slag, crushed glass, coal fly ash, rice husk ash (RHA), incinerator sewage sludge ash (ISSA), municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (MSWIBA) or shortened as IBA, bound with bitumen or asphalt, named as Bitublock. The binder used was 50 pen bitumen. The properties of the blocks evaluated were: compressive strength, density, porosity, initial rate of suction (IRS), creep, and volume stability. It was found that the Bitublock performance can be improved by optimizing porosity and curing regime. Compaction level of 2 MPa and curing regime of 200°C for 24 hours gave satisfactory bitublock performances that at least comparable to concrete block found in the United Kingdom (UK). The Volume stability (expansion) of the unit is affected by environment relative humidity.

Abstract

The slake-durability test is regarded as a simple test for assessing weathering of rocks. This simple test has been accepted as a standard test by the Rock Mechanics Society. However, mechanisms into slaking processes have not been fully understood yet as many factors involved in the processes. The current research explored mechanisms performed by the test by conducting a series of slakedurability tests for four types of soft rocks taken from Coober Pedy, South Australia. Results show that the slake-durability index (Id2) of weathered soft rocks was influenced by the degree of weathering. Distinctly weathered rocks had lower indeces compared to partly weathered rocks. Shapes also influenced the Id2 of these soft rocks. Different shapes displayed different mechanisms in the slaking processes. Samples that had irregular shapes tended to have a lower Id2 compared to samples that had rounded shapes. Thus, the slake-durability test might have simple procedures, but it could have complicated mechanisms in slaking processes that contribute to the result of the test.

Abstract

Leading is one of the most important facets in managing construction projects, and behaving as an effective leader is a vital project manager’s responsibility to ensure that work efforts of other persons are directed toward the accomplishment of organizational objectives. This paper aims to determine basic and actual leadership styles of construction project managers in Surabaya. The effectiveness of the actual leadership style is also examined. To accomplish the objective, the paper first briefly reviews the ways in which leadership is approached. Data were then collected through an empirical survey to 46 project managers, taking Fiedler and Hersey-Blanchard’s models as the point of departure. The results indicate that the basic leadership of project managers in Surabaya falls slightly on task-oriented behavior. Meanwhile selling is the most common style used as actual leadership in practice. The paper discusses the effectiveness of the styles adopted and situational variables affecting.
