Abstract

Internship is essential for polytechnic students to apply their knowledge on a particular subject. In applying the knowledge, students are required to do internships at offices that are in line with their study program. In this case, reading comprehension becomes the main focus of the application in doing the internship. This study aims to describe the implementation of reading comprehension during the internship program at the international relation office of a public university in Bandung. The reading comprehension is applied in three activities: collecting information on exchange programs, searching for the information on short programs, as well as gathering information on important dates of university’s partners. Data collection methods applied in this study are observation and library study. This study shows that reading comprehensions such as scanning, skimming, and making interpretations are highly utilized in the tasks: seeking essential information in universities official websites, checking the availability of short programs for foreign students, and finding the differences on important dates among countries university’s partners. These works are important for both interns to improve and apply the knowledge and the university to get the updated information on global education and mobility. Abstract

Learner autonomy has been playing an essential role in EFL learning for over thirty years. In Bangladesh, English speaking classrooms are mainly teacher-centered, and only limited space on learner autonomy paves the way for this study. The study focuses on the present scenario of practicing learner autonomy in an English-speaking classroom and the challenges of implementation at the tertiary level. In Bangladesh, enormous work has been done on developing English speaking skills, but a few works have been conducted on practicing learner autonomy in an English-speaking classroom. The study was non-experimental research and followed a casual-comparative design. The research used mixed methods for data analysis. In the quantitative approach, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics have been used. The results have been analyzed by SPSS 28.0 (Statistical Package for Social Science) and Microsoft Office excels. For qualitative approach, focused group interview has been done. The findings show that learners' autonomy is not being practiced adequately in an English speaking classroom. Both teachers and learners tend to practice "reactive autonomy" than "proactive autonomy." The study also sheds light on the positive attitude of both learners and teachers on practicing learner autonomy in an English speaking classroom and the challenges of its implementation in the English classroom at the tertiary level. This work can be useful in supporting learner autonomous classroom and will be beneficial for further study. Moreover, the study anticipates further study in this field is necessary.

Abstract

The aims of the study to find an ideal approach to enhance students in this theatre course and facilitate them for literature understanding through several literature theories. This study proposed a sociological literature approach with two elements. There are consist of the sociology of the author and the sociology of literature. To explain Existence on the absurdity of the character, Existence on the collective absurdity, Existence of personality structure based on data. The existentialism approach was also used to solve the complexity of concepts in each drama script. Through the two elements of the sociology of literature, we acquired that the essence of existentialism is the term exists, as Camus’s work on rebellion theme, I rebel; such as, I exist. Talking about the absurdity of literary works is talking about the notion of absurdity itself and the notion of its feeling, and then about attitudes determining our actions. Abstract

The aims of this study were to determine the implementation of lecturers about CALL. This study uses a qualitative method with individual interview techniques. Three lecturers teach essential reading which are the samples of this research. There are two, namely: (1) introducing CALL to lecturers and trying to apply it in the reading learning process in class; (2) interviewing lecturers to find out their perception of CALL. Implementation of CALL is an application or computer software as a technology used in learning the context of a second language. The application of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is one way to develop language teaching practices. The study describes the degree of CALL implementation by Essential Reading Lectures. It applies descriptive qualitative research which is used to discover information on a certain phenomenon. In this research, multiple interviews with open-ended questions were conducted to collect data. Furthermore, the information was analyzed qualitatively by describing the findings supported by relevant theories. The conclusion CALL makes students more enthusiastic in learning English and improves their English skills, especially in terms of reading comprehension. In addition, the application of CALL can improve their skills in using computers for future careers. CALL also provides lecturers to create discussion groups or forums that can be accessed by students. Keywords: CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning, implementation, Essential Reading Lecturers

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in assisting the audiences for understanding the information of the writer or speaker. In order to avoid misunderstanding, the translator needs to consider the methods they used. It should be depended on the object to be translated and the addressee. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying the translation methods and the translation ideology in the translation of an English fairytale entitled “The Bogey-Beast” retold by Flora Annie Steel (1922). This fairytale translated in Indonesian by Pustaka Bahasa Inggris. This study employed the theory of translation ideology proposed by Venutti (1995). Besides, in investigating the translation method used by the translator, this study employed the translation method theory constructed by Newmark (1988). Through descriptive qualitative approach, the findings of this study revealed that the translator used six methods such as word-for-word, literal, faithful, semantics, free, and idiomatic translation. Meanwhile, semantics translation method was the dominant method used by the translator. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator of Indonesian version “The Bogey-Beast” fairytale tends to the foreignization ideology. Abstract

One of the biggest obstacles for translators is cultural differences which can obstruct making a good translation. This research aims to explain the cultural filters in the English-Indonesian translation of the fable entitled The Two Ducks and The Fox based on the dimensions proposed by House (2004, 2005). The research applies descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used transcription in order to collect the data. The data were analyzed based on those dimensions of cultural filters. However, the translator of the fable only applied four dimensions such as the terms of directness, orientation towards self versus orientation towards other, orientation towards content versus orientation towards addressee, and explicitness versus implicitness. As a result, the researcher found that there were 9 cultural filters in The Two Ducks and The Fox. It consisted of one indirectness to directness, one orientation towards the other to the orientation towards self, four orientations towards addressees to the orientation towards content, one the orientation towards addressees to the orientation towards content, and 2 explicitness into implicitness. As a result, the cultural filters can help the translators to overcome the problems relating to cultural differences in both the source language and target language.
