Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill in learning a language, and it is one of the most influential skills that has to be mastered by students in EFL classroom. The improvement of speaking skill is important to the development of the students taking an English Program at university. However, the facts showed that mostly students’ speaking skill is still poor. The problems come up from internal and external factors. From the internal factor, one of the reasons is students feel unconfident to communicate in English both in and outside the classroom, and from the external factor is the monotonous speaking teaching and learning activities in class. To solve the problems, a lecturer requires effective and innovative learning strategies. As a result, the study aims at discussing the implementation of cognitive and metacognitive in speaking skill through a short duration video to improve students’ confidence; in addition, some procedures and considerations are presented in this paper. It can be assumed that implementing both cognitive and metacognitive strategies by watching a short duration video can encourage students’ confidence in speaking skill.

Abstract

This research is focused on the analyzing and mapping the pedagogical and content knowledge (PCK) of In-Service English High-School teachers in Indonesia in responding the Indonesian Curriculum Changing namely Curriculum 2013. This study was also conducted since the score of Teacher Competencies Test (UKG) for Indonesian ESL teacher was still low. Therefore, the questionnaire was designed and adapted from TPACK questionnaire to gather the data of Indonesian ESL Senior High School Teacher on their perception and understanding on Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), Content Knowledge (CK), Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (PCK) and also their understanding on Curriculum changing (CC) that happened recently. The data showed that the result of the teacher’s Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) and Content Knowledge (CK) were quite high with the score 50% which means that the teacher thought that they were quite competence on both knowledge. Meanwhile, there were more than 60% teachers believed that they were highly competence in implementing Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (PCK) on their teaching practice. However, in term of responding the curriculum change, most of the teachers gave the response as a quite competence rather than highly competence on the issue of curriculum changing. In short, this research shows the teacher’s perception of their own knowledge that they had in responding on Pedagogical Content Knowledge also the new curriculum knowledge. Therefore, this research is expected to be as another supporting evidence to confirm and mapping the teacher’s competences which is not only relying on the result of teacher competencies test/UKG.

Abstract

The study analyses motivation and anxiety in relation to the English proficiency of trainees of English at Pusdiklat Keuangan Umum (PKU) Jakarta. Based on a survey consisting of AMTB questionnaire, FLCAS questionnaire, and the result of English proficiency test, the findings revealed that there were a high level of motivation and moderately high level of anxiety in learning English among PKU trainees, as well as an intermediate level of English proficiency. Also, motivation was more significant than anxiety in influencing English proficiency, but both variables were found to have not a very strong relationship with it, which is only 0.291 to affect on English proficiency. Therefore, based on goodness of fit statistics, there should be variables other than motivation and anxiety to be put in the regression model. Finally, the study puts several suggestion and recommendations for teachers, training center, and future researchers in the area.

Abstract

Technology is everywhere in education. Schools, universities, and other educational institutions have provided computers for learners to run their learning activities. Most students enthusiastically welcome such an extraordinary technology. Moreover, the growth of technology encourages teachers to apply it in teaching learning process and involves learners in order to achieve the goals. Due to these issues, this study was conducted to determine students’ perspective on the implementation of Project Based Learning (PBL) activities in an application of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). This study involved 40 participants who were learning writing at the fifth semester. To obtain the data, the writer distributed the paper-based Linkert scale survey, and the students handed the reflective notes in to answer two questions related to the implementation of PBL: What are the advantages of the PBL activities done in the CALL application? and What are the challenges of the PBL activities done in the CALL classroom?. The data analysis revealed that the students had positive responses on CALL and PBL in teaching and learning process although they found some obstacles to integrate CALL. The implication of CALL in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) can be used for further research.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Edmodo media used to improve the ability of English language students especially grammar mastery. The method used in this study is the quasi experimental method with the population all of the first semester students of Basic English Structure in 2016/2017 Academic Year. The samples taken are  of 2 classes (as experiment and control sample) from IC and IB class by using purposive sample technique. The total of them are 60 students.. The instruments used in this research are pre-test and posttest by following the test requirement analyses of the Chi Square normality test and homogeneity test. Then it was ssupported by the questionnaire given to the experimental class. From the normality test result for control class, both pre-test and post-test were obtained 𝝌𝒐 𝟐 = 2.89 <𝝌𝑡 2 = 9.49, and 𝝌𝒐 𝟐 = 7.12 <𝝌𝑡 2 = 9.49 then Ho was received and the sample of the population is normally distributed. In the pre-test of experiment class it was obtained 𝝌𝒐 𝟐 = 0.65 was smaller than 𝝌𝑡 2 = 9.49, and 𝝌𝒐 𝟐= 0.71 was smaller than 𝝌𝑡 2 = 9.49, so Ho was accepted and the sample of the population was also normally distribution. Based on the  homogeneity test, the writer got variance of pre-test score between experiment class and control class that is Fobserved< Ftable,  (1.00< 2.17), and the post test score between the experimental class and control class is Fobserved< Ftable, (1.22<2.17), hence, Ho was accepted and both data variances are homogeneous. From the calculation of independent t-test, tobserved  > ttable (179 >1.67) it was found Ho was rejected and Hi hypothesis was accepted which meant that students’ mean value using Edmodo as media  is higher  compared with students using conventional method; without media, so it can be concluded Edmodo media can increase students’ grammar mastery in their learning.
