This study proposed a sociological literature approach with two elements. There are consist of the sociology of the author and the sociology of literature. To explain Existence on the absurdity of the character, Existence on the collective absurdity, Existence of personality structure based on data. The existentialism approach was also used to solve the complexity of concepts in each drama script. Through the two elements of the sociology of literature, we acquired that the essence of existentialism is the term exists, as Camus’s work on rebellion theme, I rebel; such as, I exist. Talking about the absurdity of literary works is talking about the notion of absurdity itself and the notion of its feeling, and then about attitudes determining our actions. Absurdity also needs to be explored through emotions and intertextuality. Keywords: absurdity, existentialism, drama. theater

Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the significant difference in students’ reading comprehension achievement between students taught using the Padlet-based Know-Want to Know-Learned (KWL) chart strategy and those taught using a conventional reading strategy.A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design was employed with the participants involving the students in English reading lesson.  The samples taken using purposive sampling numbered 36 for the experimental class and 36 for the control class. After the pretest and posttest were conducted, the data obtained showed an increase in the average English proficiency of the experimental class students from 69.22 to 91.11. This indicates that the students' reading skills increased significantly after the treatment was conducted. Although the statistical analysis did not reveal a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, the experimental group taught using the Padlet-based KWL chart strategy demonstrated a higher mean gain score and a larger effect size. Nevertheless, the experimental group taught using the Padlet-based KWL chart strategy demonstrated a higher mean gain score and a larger effect size, indicating that the strategy still had a meaningful practical impact on students’ reading comprehension despite the absence of statistical significance.

Abstract

Abstract

Many Indonesian EFL students lack of exposure to English and have difficulties with listening comprehension; more significantly, they are rarely exposed to naturally occurring, authentic spoken discourse in their learning environments, which can better mirror their needs in real-world communication. The study was a classroom-based study on the application of TED Talks in English Club activities in a senior high school and investigated how it could impact not only students' listening achievement of students, but also their use of self-regulated learning strategies. This was done during the implementation by way of listening tests, questionnaires, and a weekly learning journal written by the students. The listening results of the students were significantly improved with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) and a high effect size reported, as the mean score of the students on the pre-test was 64.11 and the post-test was 81.04. Along with the test results, the data from the journal and questionnaire revealed that the majority of students could plan, monitor, and control their learning when they engaged in listening activities.

Abstract

This study focuses on investigating the role of the hand puppet as a teaching medium in reducing speaking anxiety among junior high school EFL students through a qualitative study approach.  The sample of this study was eight eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Surabaya who were purposively selected based on their experience of speaking anxiety in English classes. The students were involved in English speaking activities assisted by hand puppets during classroom instruction. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals to explore students’ perceptions and reflections on the use of hand puppets in English-speaking lessons. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes related to students’ emotional responses, confidence, and anxiety levels. The findings revealed that most students perceived hand puppets positively, as they helped create a more enjoyable and less intimidating learning environment. The use of hand puppets was found to reduce students’ fear of making mistakes, lower their anxiety, and enhance their confidence in speaking English. Although a small number of students expressed neutral or less positive responses due to personal preferences, the overall results indicate that hand puppets can function as an effective instructional medium to support students’ emotional comfort and engagement in speaking activities. Therefore, this study concludes that hand puppets have strong potential as an alternative teaching medium to reduce speaking anxiety and foster a supportive speaking environment for junior high school EFL learners.
