Abstract

This study aims to analyze the causes and effects of verbal bullying depicted in The Karate Kid (2010) using a descriptive method. The film portrays Dre, a transfer student from the United States, as a victim of verbal bullying by Cheng and his friends. The analysis is based on theories from Wardhana (2015) and Fujikawa (2016). The identified causes of verbal bullying include Cheng's hatred toward Dre's physical differences, Cheng's lack of self-confidence driving him to seek attention, and his resentment stemming from negative experiences with his teacher. The effects of verbal bullying on Dre include feeling intimidated, leading him to avoid Cheng, and feeling alienated, which causes discomfort in his new environment and a desire to return to the United States. This study highlights the complex causes and significant psychological impacts of verbal bullying, both in real-life contexts and fictional representations such as films.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of hoax news about foreign doctors on the trust of University X medical students in the government. It focuses on two controversial events: the viral spread of claims regarding the government’s plan to recruit 6,000 foreign doctors and the dismissal of Faculty Dean. Both events were widely circulated on digital media, often with sensationalized and misleading headlines, fueling public confusion and skepticism, particularly within the academic medical community. Utilizing a descriptive quantitative approach, the research surveyed 277 out of 903 active students through convenience sampling. Data were gathered via an online questionnaire measuring both the extent of hoax news exposure and the students’ level of trust in government institutions. A simple linear regression analysis revealed a strong and significant relationship between hoax exposure and trust levels, with an R² value of 0.870 and a correlation coefficient of 0.933. This suggests that 87% of the variation in trust is attributable to the influence of hoax content. Despite students’ general awareness of current events, misleading narratives and delayed government responses significantly shaped their perceptions. The findings highlight the need for improved government crisis communication that is timely, transparent, and evidence-based. Additionally, it underscores the importance of fostering digital literacy and critical thinking in educational settings to help students critically assess information and maintain trust in public institutions, especially in health-related matters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze semiotic signs in the film Dua Garis Biru referring to the semiotic approach according to Roland Barthes. The reason for choosing this film is because it raises complex social issues regarding teenage pregnancy, family conflict, and social pressure in modern Indonesian society. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method using a two-level semiotic analysis technique according to Barthes: denotation and connotation. The results of the analysis show that this film contains many visual symbols and dialogues that are full of meaning, representing the social reality of teenagers and the role of the family. Symbols such as the blue line, the dining table, and the classroom are the main elements in communicating moral messages and cultural aspects. Through the interpretation of these signs, this film is able to arouse the audience's social awareness of the importance of sex education, communication in the family, and adolescent responsibility.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form and meaning of the use of mixed codes in the viral video content of the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, entitled "Naughty Children Brought to Military Barracks". The approach used is qualitative descriptive with literature study techniques, see and note techniques on videos uploaded on @dedimulyadiofficial TikTok account. The results of the study show that the code mix used is a mixture of inward codes, in the form of a combination of formal Indonesian and informal spoken language. This mixed-code strategy is not only linguistic, but also reflects a political communication strategy that is populist, paternalistic, and responsive to digital audiences. Dedi Mulyadi positions himself as an authority figure who is close to the people, especially families and children, by using simple, persuasive, and emotional language. Mix code serves as a tool to build a symbolic relationship between leaders and society and form an image of a leader who is friendly, active, and down-to-earth. These findings show that in a digital space like TikTok, language becomes an important instrument in the construction of political image and effective public communication.
