Abstract

This study aims to understand how complex coastal and fisheries systems can function effectively and achieve adequate system resilience. It examines a coastal region in Indonesia (Cilacap Regency) the only coastal area in the country characterized by overlapping civilian and military authority and a history of conflict. By integrating a social-ecological systems approach with the context of civil-military relations, this study identifies key variables shaping coastal and fisheries resource governance. These variables are subsequently used to determine the primary drivers of coastal and fisheries resilience, develop a coastal city resilience model, and formulate policy recommendations for government and resource management actors. Methodologically, the study employs Social Network Analysis (SNA) to identify and map key variables and uses Qualitative Network Modelling and Simulation (QNMS) to evaluate different governance configurations in terms of economic stability and overall system resilience. The findings reveal a clear trade-off: military-dominated governance enhances short-term law enforcement effectiveness, particularly in suppressing illegal fishing practices, but undermines inter-agency coordination, actor trust, and the role of non-state actors. In contrast, collaborative and civilian-led governance scenarios yield more balanced and stable outcomes across ecological, economic, and social dimensions. These findings contribute to the collaborative governance literature by demonstrating that sustainable fisheries governance depends on positioning the military proportionally as a supporting rather than dominant actor, as well as on integrating enforcement capacity with participatory mechanisms to strengthen long-term social-ecological resilience.

Abstract

Waste metals from the Siak River in Indonesia's Riau Province can enter fish organs and change their structure and metabolic functions. This study looks for heavy metal concentrations in the water and structural organ alterations of Hemibagrus nemurus (Valenciennes, 1840). Fish and river water samples were collected at sites 1 (Limah Puluh district) and 2 (Rumbai Pesisir district). The Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method tests kidney and gill Pb samples. Siak River Pb readings in locations 1 and 2 were 0.113 mg/L and 0.072 mg/L in January 2024 and 0.105 and 0.128 mg/L in October. Gill and kidney Pb were 0.0132 and 0.2726 mg/kg. Fish kidneys were reddish-black at two sites, while gills were bright red at site one and dark red at site two. In all samples, edema, fusion, hyperplasia, telangiectasis, and epithelial lifting indicate fish gill tissue injury. Kidney tissue abnormalities also indicate injury. It is concluded that Pb levels in the Siak River exceeded the permissible limit in 2024, resulting in edema, necrosis, degeneration, and damage to the kidneys and gills of fish. The ecosystem of the river may be harmed by elevated Pb levels in the water, which have also injured fish organs.

Abstract

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that serve as primary producers in aquatic ecosystems and have the potential to be developed as a source of economically valuable biomass. One of the most widely cultivated microalgae is Chlorella sp. because of its rapid growth and high nutritional content. The availability of balanced nutrients in the culture medium strongly influences the successful cultivation of Chlorella sp. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of urea, ZA, and TSP technical fertilizers at an N:P ratio of 7.2:1 in supporting Chlorella sp. productivity at the laboratory scale. The study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with repeated observations over time, comprising one control treatment with Dahril solution medium and five technical fertilizer combination treatments at different concentrations. The results showed that the highest cell abundance was obtained in the control treatment (K), reaching 12.54 × 10⁶ cells/mL, with a specific growth rate of 0.355 d⁻¹ and an absorbance value of 1.289. Among the technical fertilizer treatments, treatment four (P4), consisting of 203.76 mg/L ZA, 92.76 mg/L urea, and 27.48 mg/L TSP, produced the highest cell abundance, reaching 11.28 × 10⁶ cells/mL, with a specific growth rate of 0.339 d⁻¹ and an absorbance value of 1.207. The relationship between cell abundance and absorbance showed a very strong correlation, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9678. These results indicate that the combination of urea, ZA, and TSP technical fertilizers at an N:P ratio of 7.2:1, particularly in treatment P4, has the potential to serve as an alternative nutrient medium to support Chlorella sp. productivity.

Abstract

The fisheries processing sector still faces challenges in increasing the added value and competitiveness of fishery products, particularly in modern fishery-based Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This study aimed to analyze the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and the added value of fish chips processing at Generasi Restu Ibu MSMEs in Depok City. The research employed a case study method with a quantitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, while value-added analysis was conducted using the Hayami method. The results showed that 175 kg of tilapia surimi produced 255 kg of fish chips with a conversion factor of 1.46. The processing activity generated an added value of IDR 365,480.34/kg with a value-added ratio of 85.11%, categorized as high added value, and generated a profit of IDR 364,600.34/kg. In conclusion, fish chips processing is economically feasible and has strong potential to be developed as a modern fish-based processed product.

Abstract

Biofloc technology has become a promising approach for maintaining water quality in intensive seawater aquaculture through the activity of heterotrophic microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the biofloc formation in seawater culture media using different carbon sources without starter inoculation. This study evaluated biofloc formation in seawater culture media using different carbon sources, namely molasses (control), wheat flour, rice flour, and tapioca flour. A completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications was employed. The research method employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. The observed parameters included biofloc volume (Imhoff cone), absorbance value (optical density), plankton composition, and bacterial characteristics through isolation and Gram staining. The results showed that statistically, different carbon sources had no significant effect on biofloc volume (p > 0.05). However, descriptively, differences in performance among treatments were observed. The rice flour treatment exhibited the highest biofloc volume and absorbance value, indicating higher and more stable microbial biomass density, while tapioca flour showed the lowest performance. Microbiological analysis revealed the presence of Gram-negative heterotrophic bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and plankton communities consisting of phytoplankton, protozoa, and rotifers, indicating that the biofloc system had developed into a complex microecosystem. In conclusion, the type of carbon source influences the dynamics of biofloc formation, with rice flour recommended as the optimal carbon source to support biofloc system stability.

Abstract

Wenzhou shrimp virus 8 (WzSV8) is a newly identified RNA virus that has been increasingly reported to infect vanamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in various countries. This study aimed to detect the presence of WzSV8 and analyze the genetic relationships among viral isolates using molecular approaches. Hepatopancreas samples from clinically symptomatic vanamei shrimp were collected from aquaculture ponds and analyzed using RT-PCR and nested PCR targeting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene. The amplification products were subsequently sequenced using the Sanger method and analyzed phylogenetically using the Maximum Likelihood model with the Kimura 2-parameter and Gamma distribution (K2+G). The results showed that all positive samples produced a 168-bp DNA band in the nested PCR stage. BLAST analysis confirmed high nucleotide identity with the WzSV8 isolate from GenBank. Phylogenetic reconstruction indicated that the Indonesian isolates were closely related to isolates from China and India and formed several distinct genetic clusters. These results indicate a high degree of genetic conservation in the WzSV8 RdRp gene and suggest the possibility of viral spread through global shrimp trade and aquaculture activities.
