Abstract

Trimethylolethane (TME) trihydrate particle suspended in water is a proper substance for latent heat transportation in cooling systems, since it has high heat transfer and thermal capacity. Additives, oleyl bishydroxyethyl methyl ammonium chloride as surfactant and sodium salicylate as counter-ion, were added into TME slurry to reduce its friction factor. Aditives influence on particle size distribution and rheological characteristic of TME are investigated in this study. It is found that the additives do not influence particle size at crystallization point, but they clearly inhibit further particle growth. By increasing molar ratio of counter-ion to surfactant, the particles do not grow at all. Increasing TME concentration reduces the apparent viscosity of TME with surfactant and increases critical shear rate for Shear Induced Structure (SIS) occurrence. By connecting this SIS phenomenon with previous data, it is found that there is a relation between the SIS and drag reduction for this drag-reducing TME suspension system.

Abstract

The oil price has been increasing since the last few years. Since then the utilization of hydro power plant has also been increasing. The hydro power plant is very well known as environtmental friendly power plant and therefore its utilization is demanded all around the world. Indonesia has planned to build up until 488 MW micro and mini hydro power plant until the year 2020. Half of this is micro-hydro power plant and the other half is mini-hydro power plant. The turbines for micro-hydro power plant have been produced locally, but the other half which are mini-hydro power plant are still imported from foreign countries. It is the intention of this applied research to develop the capability of local industry to design and manufacture the Francis turbine for mini-hydro power plant from 300 kW until 5 MW. The utilization of CAD/CAM/CAE System is very intensif during the development phases. Reverse and forward engineering has been applied for this purpose. The good result has been achieved. The continuous improvement shall be done in the future in order to have the better result.

Abstract

Any rolling bearing defect has a certain vibration response signature which can be observed through its waveform as well as frequency spectrum, such as the sideband frequencies, which indicate there is modulation phenomena among the vibration response signals. This research was carried out to study the vibration response signatures in the roll bearings due to the interaction between the static load and bearing inner/outer race waviness. This experimental research consists of FRF (Frequency Response Function) measurements to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the rolling bearing vibration, and power spectrum testing to measure the vibration response that occurs in the bearing. The shaft speed and static loads (vertical, horizontal, combination) are varied during the experimental study. Experimental results reveal Roll Passage Frequency (RPF) and its sidebands caused by the static load, and it was also found that waviness in the order of 4 at  the inner race and in the order of 6 at the outer race of the bearing.

Abstract

In this paper, an approach of the formulation for Hertzian contact problem between wheel and rail is presented. This formulation used analytic and numerical approach, especially in solving elliptic integrals in order to obtain dimension relations of the contact, deformation, contact pressure and stress contours. The main curvature radius range of the smaller rail are from 300-260 mm. Modeling with finite element solution was also performed as an alternative approach solution to the contact pressure. Besides, it is with Finite Element Method (FEM) can show the contact stress distribution and the influence of contact at a certain depth. The result of this formulation and Finite Element approach are compared with the model equation by Fischer and Wiest [1] and the exact value calculated by Hertz's equation [2]. The results showed that the calculation of the contact dimensions and maximum contact pressure give more conform results. The difference results obtained by the method of Hertz are between 1.47-2.37% for the maximum contact pressure and 2.45-3.02% for the major axis the ellipse. The difference results using finite element method also gives conforming results of 0.09-3.5% for the maximum contact pressure.

Abstract

In conceptual aircraft design phase, the aircraft configuration and several design variables are frequently changed and starting points are depended on any most probable design conditions. Therefore, it is required a design tool having flexibility to response to different starting points. The implementation of the constraint propagation supported by an object-oriented programming could result in a computer application that considerably accommodates the need of flexibilities.  Moreover, the implementation of some graphical user-interfaces and filter are not only to make it become user-friendly but also it may perform good filters to validate all inputs from the user. Use case diagram and class diagram are utilized as tools for designing the computer application using Microsoft Visual C++ 6. For a case study, some relations of basic aircraft geometry are implemented by selecting the six constraints and fourteen design variables. The result of this work shows that the application of constraint propagation is right and proper to handle any frequent changes during the conceptual design phase.

Abstract

A gas saver for gas cooking stove has been investigated, designed, and tested in this work. The device is a conical vertical cylinder placed around the cooking pan. The application of the device does not need any modification of the cooking stove nor the cooking pan. The temperature distribution of hot gas around the cooking pan is computed by means of numerical method. It is found that a significant fuel saving can be obtained using the gas saver because the vertical wall becomes an energy input area to the cooking pan which is not the case in absence of the gas saver. The tests of gas saver have been carried out using aluminum cooking pans of 16 cm and 29 cm diameters to heat 1.30 kg and 2.35 kg of water, respectively. In this preliminary test the gas saver is made of aluminum laminated cartoon. It is found that the gas saver reduces the cooking time and reduces the fuel consumption about 9 "“ 11 %. With the assumption of LPG consumption 12 kg/stove/ month,, 6,000,000 cooking stove used (government plan) and 10% of fuel saving, 86,400,000 kg of LPG will be saved per year. With the price of a gas saver Rp 20,000.00/piece/year, the total money saved will be amounted to Rp 240,000,000.00 per year.

Abstract

Vertical jump is a good indicator for success in sports that need strength and speed of lower extremity such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer. The skeletal model of human body is treated as a two dimensional multibody system to analyze vertical jump. The squat jump of a particular subject could be simulated on the multi-body system model. The simulation results in the maximum jump height in close agreement with the height obtained via the flight time method analysis. Hence, the simple multibody model is deemed adequate for squat jump analysis. Furthermore, the results of this research could be used as a basis for further modeling and analysis improvement. Advanced model should take into account the effects of the muscles. Accurate measurement could be achieved by employing better sensors and data acquisition system. Future results of investigation in the area of dynamics of human movement could serve the sport world and medical rehabilitation program.

Abstract

In general aircraft are classified into two major categories: fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft which are commonly known as helicopters. The vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is designed to be capable of both flying horizontally like a fixed wing airplane and also ascending and descending vertically and thus eliminates the need of a runway [1],[2],[3],[4]. At recently years, Ducted fan VTOL is most popular. The reason behind that fact is the efficiency of power on the maneuver. This paper presents the results of design and testing of coaxial rotor ducted fan VTOL UAV. Pitch and roll moment of this vehicle will controlled with 2 independence control surface that's attached on the bottom of duct. The Ducted profile is applied to the system in order to improve the efficiency thrust at hovering state [3]. The goal of this design is to find optimized rotation speed rotor and distance between rotors. The value of rotation speed and distance between rotors could be simulated in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Analysis. The target of this simulation is to find some combination minimum yawing moment and maximum thrust at specifics distance between each rotor. In order to validate this simulation and analysis, we used dedicated platform that's could sense thrust and roll, pitch, yaw moment.

Abstract

Micro Unmanned Helicopter with ability of takeoff, landing and hovering offeres excellent support tool for missions in indoor environment. In this paper, a review of preliminary studies towards the development of autonomous coaxial helicopter MAV is presented. The paper starts with the statement of coaxial helicoper MAV development. Then, it is continued by the introduction of development of dynamic model for a typical coaxial rotor platform. In the third issues, initial steps in development of sensory system and control system will be dealt with. In brief, an analytical mathematical model has successful derived. This model together with the developed sensor system will act important role towards the full development of the dynamics model as the system identification is carried out.

Abstract

Rolling bearing is a mechanical component which is commonly used in industrial machinery to suppress mechanical losses due to friction. Health condition of those machines are monitored by measuring its vibration responses as normally conducted in predictive maintenance (PdM) technology. There are two important steps in PdM, i.e. frequency spectrum analysis for diagnostic purpose and control trip value which is based on the root mean square (RMS) vibration level evaluation of the machine in operation. The vibration response measuring results show, the floor noise level contributs to the increase in RMS vibration level. Floor noise found in the frequency spectrum of the rolling bearings vibration resembles the pattern obtained from the frequency response function (FRF) measurements of the rolling bearing assembly unit. The objective of this study is to evaluate the FRF patterns detected in the vibration response of a new rolling bearing installed in the measuring set up. The vibration response and FRF measurements were performed and the frequency spectrum is measured for various shaft rotating speeds as well as static loads. Floor noise signal obtained from frequency spectrums measurement shows a pattern which resembles the FRF curve of the roller bearing measuring set up. The FRF pattern of the floor noise is caused by rolling friction phenomena which generates random vibration excitation signals on the tested rolling bearing and its supporting structure.
