Abstract

The Montreal Protocol requires large water chillers cease using refrigerants 11, 22 and 123. Comparing thermodynamic and transport property parameters for these, 134a, 290, 601, 601a, 717 and pentafiuoroiodoethane avoids certain errors and biases. The parameters for R71 7 (ammonia) offer energy savings about 20%. R290 or 717 can replace 22. The pentane mixture R601 /601a [50/50] with an electronic 38% rotor speed increase can economically replace R11.

Abstract

This paper presents a study on the effects of forming process of a top–hat thin–walled beams to its bending crush resistance under dynamic bending load. The thin–walled beam was formed using a one step deep drawing. HyperForm software simulated the forming process and mapped its effects such as thickness variations and residual plastic strains in to the crash analysis models. Then the dynamic bending crush analysis was carried out using LS–DYNA by using the geometry and materials data obtained from the forming analysis results. For each material model, the analyses were carried out for model with and without the forming effects. The bending crush behavior of the top–hat thin–walled beams were then analyzed to compare between the simulations with and without forming effects. The results show that by incorporating the effect of forming process, the bending crush resistance of the thin–walled  beams is increase by 4.7%. The introduction of strain rates to the material model increases even further on the bending crush resistance of the thin–walled  beam.

Abstract

Technology development advances in recent years produce materials having higher strength, complicated shape and high accuracy. These have placed demands on the new technology in machining processes. Non-conventional machining processes are providing effective solutions to the problem mentioned above.Wire EDM machining is one of some non-conventional machining processes which is using wire as tool. The limitation of this technique as also happened with other non-conventional machining processes is a lower rate of material removal comparing to the conventional processes. This study was conducted to obtain data in order to optimize machining condition of medium carbon steel using for die material.

Abstract

In obtaining the dynamic response of a dynamic system, its uncouple modal equation of movement simplifies the usage of superposition modal method. This paper proposes a strategy to obtain the uncouple modal equation based an hypotheses of Basile : “Although the presence of modal-damping-couple, the modal equations of movement are dynamically uncoupled for a structure having small damping coefficient if its natural frequencies are well-separated"(1). This hypotheses is justified by several authors, i. e. by Hasselman(1). Thus, by separating the natural frequencyof a dynamic system using Hasselman criteria, it is expected that the modal equation of movement will become uncoupled. The separation of the natural fiequency is done by optimization method which is conducted by using the finite element software ANSYS.

Abstract

The stiffness of a cracked shaft changes due to the position of the crack. The problem is how to make a general equation of motion that can be used for all crack positions, so frequency response resulted represents the real frequency response of the cracked shaft. The cracked shaft modelling uses the moment inertia of cracked shaft at various crack positions is the first step. The second step is determining frequency response of significant crack position. The third step is determining the equivalent moment inertia of a cracked shaft that represents the condition of the crack. Next, by using Rayleight-Ritz Method and equivalent moment inertia of cracked shaft, the equation of motion that represents condition of cracked shaft can be determined. The results of this equation are Campbell Diagram and response to force excitation due to mass unbalance and asynchronous force. Dynamic behaviors of system are presented for three positions of crack, namely 0o, 90o, and average position. 0o position is the significant position, 90o position gives the smallest change to dynamic behavior of cracked shaft and the average position represents the condition of the cracked shaft.

Abstract

Accuracy measurements were carried out on a table movement of four axis machining center using laser interferometer based integrated measuring system. In this case the measurements included table positioning accuracy in x-axis direction and table angular as well as table straightness displacement accuracy. Following the obtained results, analysis of the machining center table displacement was carried out by modeling the table accuracy movement using a homogenous transformation matrix (HTM) method. Guide ways deflection was analyzed using five contact point method and other analysis performed by taking into account misalignment between ball screw & slideways. Diagnosis was conducted by comparing the theoretical table accuracy displacement curve and the one obtained from laser interferometer based measurement, for determining the slideways wear contour and the progressive wear of the ball screw.

Abstract

This paper presents drum brakes thermal stress analysis for 6 ton truck capacity, due to friction between shoe and drum for two leading shoe brakes type. The mechanical and thermal loading are analyzed for various road conditions such as straight path, curved, and downhill path, with various value of deceleration. Based on the transient heat transfer, the drum temperature distribution are calculated for various deceleration and braking time period. Using finite element techniques, the thermal stressses are obtained and the results are compared to the actual failures evidences of brake drums. It is obeserved that the real heat crack locations are in agreement with the computed stressed areas. Based on the pressure and temperature distribution, the wear rate can be obtained to estimate the technical life of the brake drum.

Abstract

Complex modelling using Finite element method in iterative optimisation process often yield expensive computation. One of the solution is to replace the expensive finite element analysis with a mathematically simpler model, that is using an approximate relations (Metamodel). Here, the approach is used to characterise the mechanical properties of an anisotropic plate from their corresponding natural frequencies. Radial basis functions model has been chosen for the Metamodel to approximate the finite element model generated in ANSYS 6.1 software. Characterisation process is regarded as an optimisation problem with the objective is to minimise the accumulation of differences between the target frequencies and the updated ones. The use of Metamodel shorten the computation time as well as increase the likelihood of reaching the global minimum. In general, the overall result is reasonably good to predict the mechanical properties of anisotropic plates.
