Abstract

Early reading constitutes one of the steps in Reading teaching and learning process for the first grader of Elementary School/Madrasah Ibtidaiyah. The students read to acquire and master the reading technique as well as the information in the reading text. Therefore, the teacher must plan the Reading lesson well in order that the students will be able to accustom themselves to a good and fun reading habit. The learning atmosphere must be developed through fun language activities. Such kinds of activities are in accordance to children’s characteristics, who like to play. Playing possesses a significant role in the children’s cognitive and social development.

Abstract

In the overall national development of Indonesia education occupies a strategic position and assumes an important role to play in preparing and equipping its citizens with the necessary knowledge and skills. In this fast changing and developing world, the Indonesian citizens should be able to keep abreast with the rest of the world culturally and scientifically. This implies ability to communicate with people throughout the world through a limited number of internationally accepted and understandable languages, including English. An adequate mastery of English, therefore, is crucial for educated people in Indonesia. One attempt to increase the proficiency of English is the creation of a program called the Intensive English Course (IEC). In order to determine its effectiveness, a study was conducted. This article reviews the background of the study, the methodology, the findings, and the suggestions of the IEC.

Abstract

Translation is not just divert the messages away, but also should pay attention to choice appropriate words to achieve the equivalence, whether grammatically and textually. Since the equivalence itself is closely related to the concept of translatable and untranslatable. Furthermore, each language has its own rules which may be difficult or even cannot be translated into other languages. Therefore, the translator must know the right manners to achieve grammatical and textual equivalence. At this time, this research raised the issues that often encountered by the translator during the translation processing, such as to achieve grammatical and textual equivalence between source language and target language, and some strategies that can be applied by translator to reach that goals.

Abstract

As the impact of colonization, the teaching of English in Korea experiences some ups and downs. During Japan colonization, the teaching of English was discouraged, even there was an effort to annihilate English from Korea. After the liberation, the teaching of English was started again for a purpose of maintaining international relationship. To foster people’s capability of English, the Korean government has placed English as a compulsory subject in elementary school starting at Grade 3 to Grade 6 under the Seventh Curriculum Reform in 1997. Such policy leads to some pros and contras among English practitioners. This paper discusses three different opinions from three different writers whose recommendations of such issues are related to each other. First, it presents briefly the writers’ opinions about the policy of implementing English education in elementary schools in Korea. Second, it discusses the writers’ recommendations related to the unsolved issue. Eventually, the conclusion is taken based on the discussion and presented in the form of summary.

Abstract

Learning a foreign language has haunted many adult learners since it is considered very difficult. Looking at the childhood period, everybody has been successfully through his first language learning process. Therefore, every foreign language learner can revival their childhood victory in learning language simply by recurring their strategies in learning a foreign language. This article offers a foreign language learner, in this case English, a strategy by imitating the way young children learn their first language.

Abstract

Morphology or morphemic is defined as the study of the morpheme and their arrangements in building new larger morphological constructions. Morph is a physical form representing some morpheme in a language. Morpheme is the minimal unit of linguistics in a certain language. Seeing from the word formation, a new word in English and the change form of morpheme can be analyzed through two main processes. The morphological process has two main types of processes, affixation and non affixation. Affixation consists of two processes, (1) internal change, (2) Zero Modification. Affixation has ten processes namely (1)compounding, (2) blending, (3) borrowing, (4) coinage, (5) clipping, (6) backformation, (7) conversion (8) acronym, (9) multiple process (10)Reduplication. Morphophonemic processes are classified into ten processes, namely (1) loss of phonemes, (2) addition of phonemes, (3) simple consonant change, (4) assimilation; (5) dissimilation; (6) synthesis; (7) change of syllabic vowel or diphthong; (8) gradation; and (10) suppletion. This article tries to describe the process which should be conducted to analyze the word formation through morphological and morphophonemic processes.

Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia is a dynamic language. But, the dynamic seems uncontrolled and unregulated which negatively influenced the development of Bahasa Indonesia in future. Further, the disorder of Bahasa Indonesia also reflects the condition of the nation’s culture in which people tend to violent the rules. Therefore, to counter the penetration of negative influence, firstly, the quality of Bahasa Indonesia must be enhanced. This effort can be started from promoting motivation and commitment in using good and correct Bahasa Indonesia in daily communication. Schools and other educational institutions must take part in this effort.

Abstract

The main issue underlying the teaching of English in primary school is as a part of the national development that is directed towards the improvement of the quality of human resources. One aspect of this goal is the improvement of the mastery of foreign languages, particularly the English language (Huda, 1999). As a foreign language, English belongs to the difficult subject to teach for young learners, especially for writing skill. This article tries to offer a scaffolding strategy in the process of writing as an alternative way of teaching method in teaching writing to young learners. This method provides step-by-step guidance in writing that is suitable to young learners’ characteristics.

Abstract

The relation of language and thought can be viewed from two sides. Firts, language is viewed as a medium to express perception, thinking, ideas, and emotion. This perspective believes that thought influences language. Second, language influences thought, with the sense that men are only be able to think, perceive, and feel because of the presence of language. This perspective believes that language has an subjective orientation to describe the world and men’s experiences. This subjecive orientation which further shapes how men think and speak a language. As the result, two different people having different languages will think and speak differently. So, language and thought have a reciprocal relationship in which language influences thought and thought influences language. The first view is called the instrumentalism, while the second is called determinism.

Abstract

Teaching writing requires teachers to apply a suitable method which involves students mentally and physically. ESA Procedure has some unique benefit for both teachers and students since teachers begin the lesson with engaging students to the material to be taught and the classroom situation. ESA, with all its types, can be used to teach students to write texts in different genres and levels of difficulties. By this procedure, teachers can explore students’ readiness to begin writing whereas students themselves have opportunities to develop their knowledge through the information obtained during the teaching-learning process. In short, ESA is one procedure that should be applied by teachers in teaching genre writing.
