Abstract

In the year 2011, Japan was faced by a major disaster that affected the Touhoku region. The disaster was the largest natural disaster Japan has ever experienced. In 2016, TOHO Studios released a movie titled Shin Gojira. This movie draws direct inspiration from the 2011 great disaster. This research aims to analyze how the movie Shin Gojira represents the Touhoku disaster in terms of the natural disaster, the Japanese government, and Japanese society. The research was conducted using qualitative methods and the content analysis method. The author also used Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory to analyze the connotation and denotation meanings of the primary data. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that in representing natural disasters, the movie Shin Gojira uses Gojira itself to represent the earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster. In representing the Japanese government, Shin Gojira criticizes the Japanese government for being unprepared for a disaster, and the complicated government bureaucratic process. In representing Japanese society, Shin Gojira criticizes Japanese citizens who do not obey the rules and exploit a disaster. However, Shin Gojira also represents the trauma of the victims of the 2011 disaster.

Abstract

This study aims to design an e-learning environment to support autonomous learning in Japanese language education and to explore its applicability.  In recent years, as the need for an educational environment that promotes learners’ independent learning has increased, support methods using ICT have been attracting attention.  As part of this study, an online learning portal was designed for Indonesian university students.  The platform incorporates self-assessment tools, progress management functions, and interactive learning materials.  Results showed that over 90% of learners reported increased motivation and a greater sense of self-regulation.  Learners were observed to exhibit autonomous learning behaviors, such as selecting learning materials that suited their needs and actively reviewing and gathering information outside of class.  On the other hand, some learners who were accustomed to the traditional sentence-based learning method had difficulty adapting to the new approach.  As a result, it was shown that a structured and flexible e-learning design with self-assessment functions and progress confirmation tools is effective in supporting autonomous learning.   This study suggests that a technology-based learning environment may contribute to improving learning motivation and autonomy in the context of Japanese language learning.

Abstract

This paper presents a narrative review of Indonesian academic discourse on Japanese popular culture and examines how this field has developed over the past twenty years. Using selected keyword searches in academic databases and journals, 97 relevant articles published between 2003 and 2023 have been identified. These articles are thematically coded and analyzed to map prevailing research trajectories. The review reveals four dominant themes: (1) cinema and anime, (2) audience and reception, (3) soft power and cultural diplomacy, and (4) representation and identity. This mapping highlights both well-established areas of study and underexplored topics that require further attention. By identifying gaps in the existing literature and suggesting new directions for inquiry, the paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how Japanese popular culture has been studied in Indonesia. It also provides a foundation for future scholarship and a resource for those seeking to expand this field.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the politeness strategies in the form of ability compliments used by Japanese netizens in the comments column of Yahoo News Japan about the missing scissors incident at New Chitose Airport, Hokkaido. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data taken from comments published on August 19–20, 2024. The object of research is comments that contain compliments on abilities, correct actions, or commendable behavior. Data analysis used the classification of compliments by Mizutani & Mizutani (1987), the politeness strategies of Brown & Levinson (1987), and the concept of cyberpragmatics from Rahardi (2020). From the analysis, it was found that all compliments use the positive politeness strategy. The compliments appear in several forms, such as explicit praise for discipline, recognition of correct responses, and empathetic expressions that emphasize solidarity. This shows that even though the comments were written anonymously, Japanese netizens still uphold politeness values such as enryo (modesty) and wakimae (social conformity). In the context of cyberpragmatics, compliments not only function as positive evaluations but also as a way to strengthen relationships, give moral support, and maintain collective identity (wa/和) in digital communication.

Abstract

This study is based on the phenomenon in the anime Orange, which depicts the psychological dynamics of the main character, Naho Takamiya, in facing life challenges and interpersonal relationships. The issue raised in this study is how Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs is reflected through the behaviour and dialogue of the character. This study aims to describe Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory in the anime Orange. The method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques conducted through observation and documentation. The data analysed consists of dialogues related to Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The results show that Naho Takamiya fulfils all five levels of needs according to Maslow’s theory: physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualisation needs. This study shows that character development in fictional works can be analysed through a psychological perspective.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the representation of honne (true feelings) and tatemae (social expressions) in the anime film Koe no Katachi by Yoshitoki Ōima, highlighting the dynamics of interpersonal communication in the context of bullying, trauma, and reconciliation. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and the concepts of honne and tatemae as the analytical framework. Data were drawn from five key dialogue excerpts, analyzed to reveal how verbal and non-verbal expressions represent the dynamics of sincerity and pretense in character interactions. The findings identify three main categories: hidden honne, pleasant tatemae, and strategic tatemae. This study emphasizes the importance of authentic communication in maintaining social harmony and strengthening interpersonal relationships, and its implications are relevant for understanding cross-cultural communication dynamics and their application in character education, particularly in conflict resolution and bullying prevention.

Abstract

This study was conducted to discover the types and meanings of metaphors contained in the lyrics of Omoinotake's songs. This study aims to identify the types of metaphors and describe their meanings based on the theories of Ullman and Knowles & Moon. The research objects are the five songs by Omoinotake with the highest number of views on YouTube Music as of 2025. This study was structured based on an objective approach and data were collected through listening and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive methods. The results of this study found a total 47 metaphorical data. Based on the results of the study, abstraction metaphors are the most frequently found type of metaphor, while animal and synesthetic metaphors are the least frequently found types. The most frequently found abstraction metaphors show songwriters depicting abstract concepts in a concrete and aesthetic way, so that they can make song lyrics more beautiful and attract song listeners.
