Abstract

Nowadays, controversy of bilingual education system program still exist. Bilingualism remains as an issue particularly whether or not it is appropriate to be taught for young learners. Learning two languages in the same time is seen to create damaging effect into confusion for children in their age. In spite of the criticism, there are advantages which is offered from bilingual education. Seeing on how bilinguals have good deals as across many aspects such as cognitive control and linguistic knowledge whose the learners are better in problem solving and high order thinking skills, the purpose of the study is going to focus on how bilingualism is suitable or not to learn for young learners. Since young learners are in the golden age to acquire new language, linguistic knowledge and cognitive skills are effective enough to be taught. Therefore, the study focuses more on the discussion of previous research on whether or not bilingualism give difficulties or advantages to children. It will discuss by introducing English to young learners who will meet benefits or problems of bilingualism in early childhood. Keywords: Bilingual education; bilingualism; young learners; second language; early childhood.

Abstract

Reading is one of the four English skills that is important in academic and daily life. Many strategies can be used in reading, such as skimming, scanning, summarizing and responding, and note taking. The purposes of this research are to investigate the significant improvement of the students’ skills after using skimming strategy in reading narrative text and students’ responses after using this strategy. The researcher investigated 8th graders of SMP Advent of Semarang who were studying narrative text. The data were analysed in quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed that there was a significant improvement of the students after using skimming strategy, especially comprehending the narrative text. The result indicated that p-value = 0,019588. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Their score increased and it proved that skimming strategy is useful and help the students enhance students’ reading skills.

Abstract

Twitter is a site that offers a social network of  microblogs thus allows users to receive and send messages called tweets. The purpose of this study to examine how social media can influence students in building ideas and motivation for their own learning and to analyse how Twitter affects on knowledge purpose. In this research, the writer uses contructivism theories to know purpose of learning by using Twitter and sample research method to find out how students use Twitter in every aspect of their learning and how effectively this online application for study. After observing this study, the writer can represent using twitter as a media for learning can build the creativity and self-reliance students, also can build their own knowledge.Keywords: contructivism, learning, social media, twitter

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research paper is aimed at analyzing one of Euripides’ well-renowned classical literary works entitled Medea by focussing on Medea as the main character of the story, Medea’s psychological state, psychological reason, and sadistic personality disorder reaction. This research paper uses psychological approach in analyzing the related psychological phenomena in Euripides’ Medea. The resut of the research indicates that Medea, who gets accustomed to being raised in a barbarous family and living in a barbaric environment, has a natural impulsive behaviour to kill other persons guiltlessly. Key words: killing, guiltless feeling, sadistic personality disorder

Abstract

AbstractThis study is entitled “Michael Riffater's Semiotics on William Shakespeare's A Madrigal (A Structural and Semiotics Criticism on Poetry)”. The purpose of this study is to find out what aspects of Michael Riffaterre's semiotics are composed in William Shakespeare's A Madrigal poem. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the semiotic aspects, and library research to collect data. In order to achieve the objectivity of this study, the literary study approach used is  structural and semiotic approach. The structural approach directs the description of aspects of the physical appearance and the semiotic approach limits the description of the semiotic aspects in William Shakespeare's A Madrigal. The results of the study show that there are four aspects and their sub-aspects found in William Shakespeare's A Madrigal. The first aspect is the result of Heuristic and Hermeneutic readings and there are three sub-aspects found, namely Syntax Extraction, Morphological Change, and Normative and Semantic Forms. The second aspect is Indirect Expression including three sub-aspects that are found, namely Shifting Meaning, Distorting Meaning, and Creating Meanings. The third aspect is Matrix, Variants and Models. The fourth aspect is Potential and Actual Hypogram.Keywords: Semiotics; Michael Riffatere; Mandrigal

Abstract

Javanese Language is learnt and studied by many people throughout the world as it has a complex system of language covering the letters (Javanese Language Orthography), the politeness level, and also the history and the culture behind the language. However, there is a concern on    Javanese Language shift by its young speakers because they tend to use Indonesian Language       as Indonesia’s Official Language, English as the world’s international language, or another popular language in the world like Korean with its K-Pop phenomenon. Javanese Language maintenance is then needed to keep these young generation as the language users who will pass it to the next generation. One of the ways to do it is embracing their world so that the language        is considered good and beneficial for them as the young generation. Since music and song is      very close to the young generation as they are very up to date with the latest trend of it,               the language maintenance can be done through exposing Javanese kinds of music and songs. Recently, a kind of Javanese music called Campursari along with its songs are gaining popularity with the fame of The Godfather of The Brokenheart, Didi Kempot, who creates thousands of Campursari songs full of love stories in the lyric, particularly the brokenheart storied. Out of nowhere, the young generation, who are Javanese, who are Javanese but do not understand Javanese Language or even who are not Javanese and not understand Javanese Language are joining the crowd and becoming his fans that previously filled with the old generation.              This research shows how Junior Highschool Students maintain the Javanese Language usage       by liking the music, singing the songs and understanding the Javanese Language in the lyric.     This research also observes whether they still know or able to sing traditional Javanese songs    they exposed from their family, environment (neighbourhood) or Javanese Language class at school that shows their Javanese Language maintenance. Keywords: language maintenance, Javanese Language, students, Junior Highschool, Campursari, Javanese music and song

Abstract

AbstractJavanese language shows a dynamic change when used in daily communication. The change represented by vowels and consonants as a speaker alternates from Ngoko to Krama is not only a phenomenon of phonetics but also a phenomenon of intention. A speaker changes his linguistic code to meet social functions of language. One of them is that the change of phoneme represents the way of Javanese people when they give respect or honor to others. Phonetically, the change of phoneme will result in different mouth shapes as these phonemes are produced. According to Javanese, the shape of mouth is in line with politeness. The participatory observation method was applied to get the data. The result shows that indeed there are various changes in vowel and consonants when a speaker alternates from Ngoko to Krama. This alternation is in line with the change in which language sound tends to change from open to close. It seems Javanese will use frontier vowels and consonant as they want to obey politeness principle.     Key words: vowel and consonant change, shape of mouth and politeness

Abstract

In the modern era, the use of English now being spreading and penetrated to many fields, including educational field. Thus, learning a foreign language, particularly English is needed by students or learners. However, there are personality factors such as anxiety, that may give either good or bad influences. Therefore, strategy in learning is needed to help the learners encountering their learning process. Various strategies can be used in learning a foreign language. This study discusses about the role of digital media in helping lowering learners’ anxiety in learning foreign language especially English. Several studies are found and have conducted their analysis concerning the use of digital media such as social media, video games, video and audio, in foreign language learning. The results of the review show that digital media which offers low pressure to its users is advantageous and can be effectively used to help the learners in comprehending English so that they feel less anxiety and be more confident in learning and using English as a foreign language.
