Abstract

The study focused on the effects of the technology-based auditory-kinesthetic strategy on reading comprehension of Primary III pupils in Kaduna-South, Nigeria. The objective of the study was to determine how the effects of technology-based auditory-kinesthetic instruction improve pupils’ reading comprehension for reading speed by fostering critical thinking skills, enhancing text analysis, and enabling personalized reading practices. The study employed a quasi-experimental design of non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control groups. Out of 7,765 pupils, 114 pupils were purposively selected: the experimental group had 56 pupils, and the control group had 58 pupils. Digital Whiteboards (DW), Gesture-Based Learning Platforms (GBLP), and the Real-Time-Reading-Speed Test was used to collect the data. The study used mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and an independent samples t-test to test the hypotheses. The results showed that the strategy had significantly improved Primary III pupils’ reading comprehension for reading speed strategies, critical thinking skills, text analysis engagement, and personalized reading experiences that enhanced reading speed performance. The study recommended further study in comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, professional development and to conduct a study on the technology-based auditory-kinesthetic strategy among rural and urban language learners.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and their impact on cognitive and affective learning. Based on the Rowell’s (2015) framework, the research, employed by a mixed-methods approach, combined questionnaire data and semi-structured interviews from a group of students enrolled in an ESP course utilizing OER. A total of 320 undergraduate students voluntarily participated in the study via convenience sampling.  Results indicate that students generally had a positive emotional response to OER, appreciating their accessibility, flexibility, and alignment with course objectives. OER were perceived as enhancing learning outcomes, particularly in terms of understanding course materials and fostering critical thinking. However, while students favored OER over traditional textbooks in many aspects, some still found textbooks valuable for certain topics. Additionally, the ability to independently summarize and organize the material was identified as an area where students faced challenges. The study highlights the potential of OER in enhancing educational experiences while emphasizing the need for continuous improvements in content depth and engagement to maximize their effectiveness. It is hoped that OER can play a key role in shaping the future of education by making learning more inclusive and adaptable to diverse learner needs.

Abstract

The study aims to determine the current implementations being used in foreign language education programs and to define how to use culture effectively in language learning environments according to the teachers’ ideas since language and culture are inseparable. Phenomenology was chosen as the design of the study. 17 English lecturers from the School of Foreign Languages of a government university in Türkiye were selected as the study group using purposive sampling. In the data gathering process, a semi-structured interview form was used, and the interview was carried out through face-to-face interviews. The data was analysed using the content analysis method and then coded and categorized under main themes, which were established based on the sub-questions of the study. In this regard, four main themes and 23 codes have been defined in detail with literature references by the researchers. According to the findings of the study, it is understood that there is a continuous interaction between language and culture. Therefore, one cannot be acquired fully without the other, and especially learning a language without its cultural context may lead to miscommunication. Consequently, culture should be integrated into each the language teaching and learning phase by integrating cultural elements into curriculums.

Abstract

This study tested a statistically significant relationship between the pragmatic principle concerning iconicity of sequence and temporal adjuncts. While previous studies focused on the qualitative studies of temporal adjuncts with the textual analysis of English for everyday use, such as cookbooks and novels in English, this study contributed to the field by examining reputable international journal writer’s pragmatic competence concerning iconicity of sequence in temporal adjuncts. The data was collected from reputable international applied linguistics research articles in English published in System and English for Specific Purposes. They were published from 2023 to 2025. The data in the study were 30 applied linguistics research articles. They had 236 tokens of temporal adjuncts to study the pragmatic principle concerning iconicity of sequence. The data was analyzed by the inferential statistical program called SPSS version 29 via Pearson Correlation. The results of the study clearly showed a statistically significant relationship between iconicity of sequence and temporal adjuncts from reputable international journal writers. The p-value was reported at 0.02. It was concluded that the reputable international writers in the fields of applied linguistics had pragmatic competence concerning iconicity of sequence.

Abstract

This study examines the role of motivation based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) among Myanmar high school dropout students who continue learning English. Specifically, it explores the underlying motivational factors and their impact on students' engagement with EFL learning. The study involved nine Myanmar high school dropout students who have attended or are currently attending EFL centers in different cities. Data were collected through online and face-to-face interviews, focusing on students' experiences in learning English. Findings indicated that motivation in EFL learning is driven by inner spark, doors of opportunity, and loss of momentum in formal education, alongside the SDT elements of pursuing a purposeful path, empowerment through growth, connections, and expanding aspirational horizons. The results also suggest that students exhibit a high degree of autonomous motivation in their learning and develop stronger social engagement compared to their previous educational experiences. Additionally, while some students are motivated to pursue further education, others express a strong desire to contribute to their communities. Overall, the study highlights that high school dropout students in Myanmar demonstrate motivation to learn English, both to achieve personal goals and to contribute to their society. These findings underscore the need for socio-cultural, metacognitive, and technology-enhanced teaching approaches tailored to the autonomous learning styles of these students

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly widespread in EFL classrooms as many applications support students in various aspects of language learning. Consequently, many EFL teachers are adapting to and embracing AI as a practical aid in their teaching. This study investigates Myanmar EFL teachers' perceptions of AI writing tools, their integration into teaching practices, and the challenges encountered in their use. A phenomenological research design was adopted, and qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten Myanmar EFL teachers. The data technique used in this study was thematic analysis. The findings reveal that teachers utilize AI writing tools for student assessment, facilitating the learning process, sourcing writing materials, and planning lessons. While AI writing tools are perceived as beneficial for both students and teachers, concerns remain about their potential negative impact on students' writing skills and overall language development. Additionally, teachers face significant challenges in integrating AI writing tools due to issues such as internet instability, power outages, and limited technological knowledge. This study provides insights into the role of AI writing tools in EFL instruction in Myanmar and elsewhere, highlighting the need for improved technological infrastructure and teacher training to maximize their effectiveness.
