Abstract

Over the past few decades, there has been a growing recognition of the positive impact of role-plays involving single events on the speaking skills of EFL learners in various teaching contexts across the globe. However, the effectiveness of role-plays involving sequential events in enhancing the oral proficiency of tertiary-level EFL learners remains unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether role-plays involving sequential events were more effective than those involving single events in promoting the oral proficiency of tertiary-level EFL learners. This study employed a pretest-post-test research design and randomly selected two study groups (Treatment: N = 38 and Comparison: N = 38) using purposive sampling techniques. The treatment group was taught using role-plays involving sequential events, while the control group was instructed with role-plays involving single events for one semester. Data was collected through pre and post-tests, intervention tools, and focused group interviews and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests. The findings indicated that the treatment group, which practised role-plays involving sequential events, demonstrated more significant improvement in speaking proficiency than the control group, which used single events. Based on these positive outcomes, this study suggests that incorporating role-plays involving sequential events into EFL instruction can significantly enhance tertiary-level learners' speaking proficiency. Teachers and educators in the field of EFL/ESL should consider using sequential event role-plays to improve oral communication skills among learners. This approach can be particularly effective in Thai tertiary education, and the results contribute to the discussion on innovative teaching strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the diverse strategies employed in apology and request, investigate the influence of cultural factors, social power, and social distance on these strategies, and explore the existing limitations and gaps in the literature for future research. Data collection is conducted using the qualitative technique. Qualitative content analysis is employed for data analysis. The SLR process provides a structured framework for analyzing various strategies employed in speech acts and investigates the impact of cultural variables and social distance on these strategies. Through the implementation of a predetermined review procedure, a total of 16 papers published between 2018 and 2022 were identified and analyzed.  The findings demonstrated that many studies examined apologies and requests using different strategies and sub-strategies. Notably, politeness usage by Indonesian English teachers reflected social power dynamics, while linguistic strategies among Thai students and EFL learners were shaped by social distance. Thai study underscored the importance of cultural immersion, variations among interactants, and teaching factors in pragmatic competence. The PRISMA-guided systematic review effectively synthesized existing literature. The gaps, novel insights, and unresolved issues identified provided a roadmap for researchers to propel the field forward. This systematic review contributed a snapshot of current knowledge, charted a course for future investigations, identified gaps, and leveraged the strengths of systematic approaches.

Abstract

Debating improves students' speaking abilities and fosters spontaneous critical thinking without the need for prior preparation. In the absence of recent research on the topic, the current study aims to explore the benefits and the challenges the English Department students experienced during the implementation of the debate in the learning English-speaking process. The participants of this study were English Department students of Universitas Negeri Malang who had taken the Speaking for Academic Purposes course. A mixed-method study was conducted, by employing an explanatory sequential design to answer the formulated research questions. The quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire and were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained from the interview and were analyzed by employing the interactive model data analysis of Miles et al. The result showed that most students have positive responses to the use of debate in speaking class and debate could improve their speaking skill. The challenges they encountered during the implementation such as lack numbers of meeting and the duration, limited time for preparing debate, also difficulty in understanding the debate method caused the insignificant result of speaking skill enhancement. The debate system was varied, depending on the lecturers. The result may be used as reference for English teachers to utilize debate in English-speaking class. Likewise, the future researchers are suggested to conduct action research employing debate in English-speaking class.

Abstract

Publication in high-reputation international journals is a necessity for contemporary academics. However, academics face considerable challenges in writing for international publication partly because of failing to meet acceptable rhetorical pattern in accordance with disciplinary convention. This study tries to investigate rhetorical moves in eight Scopus-indexed research articles written by two Indonesian authors from hard science and soft science. The articles were selected based on the authors' status as first authors. To analyze the rhetorical moves, a framework from Maswana, et al. (2015) was adopted and modified. The findings revealed that the authors rhetorically organize their articles mostly in a similar way particularly in the abstract and introduction sections. Similarities were also found in manifesting several steps such as identifying data source and analysis instruments in the methods section, stating and interpreting the results in the findings and discussion section, and highlighting overall results and significance in the conclusion section. However, differences were spotted in the step level particularly in recounting experimental process in the methods section and explaining specific research outcomes in the conclusion section. Those discrepancies might be caused by disciplinary conventions. The results provide a framework and resources for academics striving to write articles for international publications.

Abstract

One of the goals, in education is to help students improve their communication and social skills to prepare them for participation in society and successful careers worldwide. This explains why oral presentations have become a method of evaluation in higher education institutions to enhance students’ ability to communicate effectively. However, many students who are learning English as a foreign language often feel anxious when they have to speak. The aim of this paper is to explore and discuss the factors that impact the performance of Egyptian undergraduate students during presentations, as well as suggest strategies to help them overcome their fear of speaking in a foreign language. This study is exploratory, non-experimental in which ninety-nine undergraduate EFL learners responded to survey questions. Analysis of the research findings indicated that anxiety stems from sources such as the fear of being judged, making errors, lack of practice, and other significant factors. The research also proposed strategies for students to manage their anxiety while presenting orally.

Abstract

Koh Lipe, Satun is a famous tourist destination along the Andaman Sea, Southern Thailand where linguistic landscape is structured mainly in English. Monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual signage in this island displays distinctiveness of linguistic elements and linguistic diversity manifested in a variety of English lexicons. Thus, this study aims to analyze lexical characteristics of English in 370 signs along three popular beaches of the island – Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Sunset Beach. It also discusses a reflection of the features on glocalization of English. Through the use of Linguistic Landscape, Multilingualism, and World Englishes approaches, an analysis of photographed data showed that textual formations of the signage highlight outstanding lexical and semantic dimensions of words. There appear to be English nouns, affixation, proper nouns in register of English, English compound nouns, hybrid compound nouns, acronyms, clipping, loanwords, loan translation, phrasal verbs, coinage, Tinglish words, and lexical repetition. Moreover, these lexical items present crucial linguistic formation in English that contacts other indigenous, Asian, and European languages, and they are formed to provide governmental information and to advertise local products and services of tourism for local and international tourists. Hence, these characteristics mirror glocalized English in a southern Thai context of tourism.

Abstract

Communication Apprehension (CA) is a pervasive challenge that significantly affects students, particularly those pursuing higher education in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. This study serves a threefold purpose: (1) to quantify and compare the levels of CA experienced by students across different EFL educational levels, (2) to investigate potential relationships between students' CA and their educational backgrounds, and (3) to explore the strategies students employ to overcome CA. A survey research design involving 60 EFL students from three distinct cohorts (24 undergraduates, 16 graduates, and 20 postgraduates) was conducted using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected utilizing McCroskey's Personal Report of CA (PRCA-24, 2005) and analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics via the SPSS software. The results reveal that all undergraduates (100%), a substantial proportion of graduates (68.75%), and a notable fraction of postgraduates (45%) experienced an average level of CA, with public speaking situations being the most common triggers. While a weak negative correlation was identified (-0.225), it did not attain conventional statistical significance (sig 0.084). Furthermore, students adopt cognitive, behavioural, and preparatory strategies to manage CA effectively. This research underscores the importance of identifying specific communication situations in which students experience heightened apprehension, facilitating the development of targeted interventions to address their unique needs in these areas

Abstract

Teaching English to first-grade elementary school children presents its own challenges for teachers. This is because children at this age have characteristics such as having a short attention span, enjoying playing, and learning more effectively when they are having fun. On the other hand, children in this group are still learning to read and write in the national language. The purpose of this research is to explore how English literacy learning is implemented, to find out the inhibiting and encouraging factors in implementing English literacy learning in first-grade elementary schools, and to find out strategies that can be used to overcome the factors that hinder the implementation of English literacy learning in the classroom. one elementary school. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this research are first-grade elementary school English teachers, school students, and learning documents. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. Some of the results of this research are that teachers apply various methods in teaching, such as songs, drills, lectures, reading aloud, memorizing, and games. Among these learning strategies, songs are the most effective strategy for introducing English to children. The challenges faced are that children are very active, get bored quickly, and a small number of children do not read fluently. Factors that can support English literacy learning are adequate learning aids such as the use of pictures and parental involvement at home to repeat English lessons and practice them at home

Abstract

The portrayal of body shaming against women in films is a social critique of the act of body shaming. Hence, the study of body shaming in films is intriguing for future investigation. The objective of this research is to uncover the portrayal of body shaming towards women in films. The research data comprised of words and phrases that encompassed body shaming and were examined utilizing Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The data was acquired from the movie Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan. This study is also classified as critical-qualitative research. The research findings indicate that the film “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan” portrays three types of body shaming, which include comparing, commenting, and insulating individuals based on their physical appearance. Furthermore, the film's production background is influenced by the film development genre in Indonesia, and the producer's background as a comedian aligns with the genre of the film. In addition, this also highlights that the film production is also considered to have some motives to depict body shaming in the film, including the commercial motive, social culture, and ideology to struggle.
