Abstract

The relationship between the variations in density of pelagic fish in the Java Sea and a suite of variables describing the environment was studied. The indicator of density (local fish abundance) used were catch per unit of effort, obtained from 1,198 catches made by commercial fishing during the 5 year period (1998 until 2002), and number of fish per unit of area from acoustic investigation made in 2002.

Abstract

The effects of Indian Ocean Dipole Mode and El Niño–Southern Oscillation events on catches of YellowfinTuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO) off Java were evaluated through the use of remotely sensed environmental data (sea surface temperature/SST and chlorophyll-a concentration/SSC) and Yellowfin Tuna catch data. Analyses were conducted for the period of 2003–2012, which included the strong positive dipole mode event in association with weak El-Nino 2006.Yellowfin Tuna catch data were taken from Palabuhanratu landing place and remotely sensed environmental data were taken from MODIS-Aqua sensor.The result showed that regional climate anomaly Indian Ocean Dipole Mode influenced Yellowfin Tuna catch and its composition. The catches per unit effort (CPUE) of Thunnus alabacares in the strong positive dipole mode event in 2006 and weak El-Nino events in 2011 and 2012 was higher. The increase patern of CPUE followed the upwelling process, started from May-June achieved the peak between September-October.Very high increase in CPUE when strong positive dipole mode event (2006) and a weak El-Nino events (2011 and 2012) had a relation with the increase in the distribution of chlorophyll-a indicating an increase in the abundance of phytoplankton (primary productivity) due to upwelling. In contrast, yellowfin tuna CPUE is very low at the La-Nina event (2005), though as the dominant catch when compared to others.

Abstract

Fisheries management has been traditionally governed to maximize economic benefit with little concern on its ecological impacts. Food and Agriculture Organization with its Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries has played an important role to a fundamental change in the new paradigm of fisheries management, which include ecosystem aspect. The Food and Agriculture Organization has mandated that every country in the world should use this approach. Weh Island is located in AcehProvince that has good coral reef condition and rich in reef fishes, therefore reef fishery is prominent. The objectives of this study are (1) to study the ecological status of reef fish, and (2) to formulate the priority areas as candidates of marine protected areas in Weh Island. Fish catch survey, underwater visual census, and focus group discussion were conducted to collect data. Data analysis used fish biomass, financial analysis, linear goal programming, and marxan analysis. Results of this study successfully identified eight fishing gears operated in Weh Island in artisanal reef fisheries. These fishing gears are gillnet, bottom gillnet, handline, muroami, trolline, speargun, longline, and purseseine. There were 84 species identified as high economic value species and were modelled in this study. Gillnet and bottom gillnet were identified as optimum fishing gears. I.e. Meulee, Anoi Itam, Iboih, Jaboi, and Klah Island were identified as priority areas.

Abstract

Abundance indices based on nominal CPUE do not take into account confounding factors such as fishing strategy and environmental conditions, that can decouple any underlying abundance signal in the catch rate. As such, the assumption that CPUE is proportional to abundance is frequently violated. CPUE standardisation is one of the common analyses applied. The aims of this paper were to provide a statistical modelling framework for conducting CPUE standardisations using the Observer Program data for bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, albacore and southern bluefin tuna, and provide a comparison in the trends between the nominal CPUEs and their standardised indices obtained. The CPUE standardisations were conducted on the Observer Program collected between 2005 and 2007, by applying GLM analysis using the Tweedie distribution. The results suggested that year, area, HBF and bait factors significantly influenced the nominal CPUEs for the four tuna species of interest. Some extreme peaks and troughs in the nominal time series were smoothed in the standardised CPUE timeseries. The high degree of temporal variability that is still shown in the standardised CPUE trends suggests that the data are too sparse to give any meaningful indication of proxy abundance. Nevertheless, this may also suggest that variables used in the GLMs do not sufficiently account for allof the confounding factors, or abundance may indeed be truly variable.

Abstract

Human activities in the watershed in the upstream of Cileungsi river have tendency to bring high organic materials to the river which determines the aquatic condition of the river. The decreased water quality is event because of the organic materials in the upstream of Cileungsi river would bring negative impacts towards water condition in the downstream. This study was conducted in determining the water quality in the upstream of Cileungsi river, using Trophic Diatom Index (TDI). The sampling was taken in four different sites in the river and sub-river of the upstream of the river. The sampling of ephilitic diatom organisms were taken by scraping the surface of substrate rocks using brush then soaked the materials into a sampling bottle which hasbun containing destile water. Diatom density was measured using census method according to standard of APHA 2012. The TDI score ranged from 48.25 to 60.47, indicating that the water quality of upstream of Cileungsi river is classified from good until poor condition.

Abstract

A growth and nutnent dtgesttbility study was executed for jelawat fry in the laboratory. The fry (40 day-old) were reared in 9 aquariums of 37.5L water volume at 30 per tank and fed an isocaloric diet(42kcal) contatning 3 dietary protein levels (33, 40, 47%) at 10% of body weigh tadayfor 49 days. Biomass was weighed fortnightly.

Abstract

The Great Jakarta Bay Ecosystem (GJBE) supports the economic growth for the surrounding community, including fisheries sector. This large ecosystem is consisted of two coastal ecosystems, i.e. Jakarta Bay and Thousands islands. There are only traditional fisheries operating either in Jakarta Bay or Thousand islands. Some economically important fisheries include shrimp, demersal and small pelagic fisheries, which are caught using different fishing gears, either active or passive fishing gears. There are some serious concerns related to the fish resources and habitat degradations in the GJBE, which in turn can cause the decrease in fish population and fish species diversity, respectively. CPUE and catch composition of the fixed lift nets, sero and fixed gillnet fisheries were obtained from the observations in 2006 and 2014. In addition, to determine the level of pollution, tissue samples were collected for green mussel (Perna viridis), blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) and white-spotted spinefoot (Siganus canaliculatus) in 2009. The CPUE trend and catch composition showed that overfishing might have been occurring in the Jakarta Bay. The histological study on gill tissues of the three species shows that the Jakarta Bay has been polluted. Several efforts have been done to address the problems, including sea farming, habitat rehabilitation (artificial reef and mangrove restoration), marine conservation area and fish shelter, restocking and sea ranching.
