Abstract

When gillnet is operated in the sea its will encounter the effects of seawater current and tidal movements. The shape and construction of the gillnet will be effected by the direction and flow speed of the seawater current. When the current is strong enough the gillnet shape could be changing, falling down or even roll up.

Abstract

Integrated fisheries resource management is absolutely needed to achieve optimal result and sustainable utilization. This research aims to analyze the benefit of mangrove forest management for prawn fishing and mangrove timber production in Segara Anakan, southern coast of Central Java. The information concerning mangrove coverage changes was achieved from a satellite imagery (Landsat) from 2002 to 2009, while prawn resources stock assessment was analyzed through production surplus method and economic analysis of prawn fishing. The results show that the condition of mangrove ecosystem in Segara Anakan since 2002 to 2009 had been decreasing with average decrease rate of 10,28% each year which caused to prawn abundance. Utilization of mangrove wood inwhich aged above 20 years would give more benefit to prawn fishing and timber production. The additional economic value for prawn fishing was approximately 3,964 times of cropped woods. Prawn fisheries resource management in Cilacap coastal waters could be done by management of fishing effort and rehabilitation of mangrove forest in Cilacap region and surrounding areas as well especially in Segara Anakan Lagoon.

Abstract

Time spent in seeking fish schools and potential fishing areas is the main source of fuel consumption, and it is a significant factor in raising the cost of fishing operation. Therefore, knowledge of the distribution pattern lnd aggregations of commercial fish in space and time is of considerable financial value to the fishers anAlisnlng industry because it will assist them to reduce the time and fuel consumption of the boats in locating the rich fishing grounds.

Abstract

Lobster is one of the most important fisheries export commodities. An increasing trend of annual production during 1999-2005 was occurred, however a decreasing trend during 2005-2007 was observed. lt is likely that the long lived and slow growing species group do not capable to balance the fishing pressure.

Abstract

Mangrove area of Berau District, East Kalimantan Province is an important buffering zone for Derawan Islands. It also becomes a distinctive habitat for commercial fisheries commodity. Land conversion into shrimp ponds has threatened its sustainability. This paper summarizing its ecological condition, fisheries, and management options presents a guideline for the decision makers about what strategies can be applied in conserving the mangrove sustainability. Overall, the ecological condition is proven to support sustainable fisheries practice; such as shrimp and crab silvofisheries. Moreover, the calculation of firewood economic value shows that a sustainable commercial firewood production is another option that can be established to support local economic activities. In addition, a well managing ecotourism may be considered by local government considering its potential for local economic growth.

Abstract

This study was based on a concept called acoustic population estimation. This is defined as a population of echoes which is based on the hyphothesis that a synthesis of biological and behavioural characteristics of the species (within a community) characterizes the community (Gerlotto & Marchal, 1987).
