Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there is any significant influenceon student’s achievement in writing descriptive paragraph tothe tenth grade students of State Senior High School 4 Palembang who are taught through Whip Around Technique and those who are not. Thi study applied quasi-experiment method with nonequivalent control group design. The population of this study was all of the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 4 of Palembang, in the Academic Year 2018/2019 with total number 320 students and 64 students were taken as sample in experimental and control group. In collecting the data, a written test of descriptive paragraph was used, and the data were analyzed by using SPSS 22. The result of this study showed that experimental group students’ average score in pretest was 64.37 and in posttest it was 77.93 while in control group, students’ average score in pretest was 64.53 and in posttest it was 66.78. The value t-obtained was (11.392) which was higher than the value of t-table (2.000) at the significant level 0.05 in two tailed test with 62 (df). It was assumed that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was significant influenceon student’s achievement in writing descriptive paragraph tothe tenth grade students of State Senior High School 4of Palembang who were taught through Whip Around Technique. Keywords: Teaching, Writing, Descriptive Text, Whip Around

Abstract

Abstract: Career exploration technique is a technique by guiding the students to expend their idea, make decision, and explore the information about something that will be developed into written. Therefore, the main objectives of this study was to investigate the significant difference between students’ writing achievement of the tenth grade students taught through career exploration technique and those taught through conventional teaching method of State Senior High School 5 of Palembang. This study applied a quasi-experimental design. The population in this study was all the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 5 of Palembang in academic year of 2019/2020 with 357 students. The sample was 70 students. They were 36 students as experimental group from Class X.IPA.1 and 34 students as control group from Class X.IPA.2 taken by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using a written test, pre-test, post- test and analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test to compare the improvement between both groups. The result of the study showed that the students’ pretest average score in the experimental group was 78.25 and in post-test it was 84.16. While, the students’ pre-test in the control group was 78.88 and in the post-test was 78.88. The value of t- obtained (4.385) was higher than the value t-table (1.671), at the significant level 0.05 in one tailed with df=68. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than the value of t-table (4.85 > 1.684), consequently the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on teaching writing descriptive paragraphs through Career Exploration Technique to the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 5 of Palembang and those who are not.

Abstract

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant difference between students who taught by using Anchored Instruction Strategy to the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 46 of Palembang. This research was conducted by using quasi-experimental design, that is, pretest posttest non equivalent control group design that compare 2 groups of the students. The population consisted of 276 students from the eight classes of State Junior High School 46 of Palembang in academic year 2017/2018. The sample of the study was selecting by purposive sampling involving 62 students as the sample. Thirty one students were in the experimental group and thirty one students in the control group. To collect the data, a written test in multiple choice was used. The written test was administered twice as pretest and posttest. the result of the test analyzed by using t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. In this study, the value of t-obtained was higher than the value of t-table (7.93 > 1.697) consequently the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, the use of Anchored Instruction Strategy was effective in teaching reading of the eighth grade students in improving reading comprehension achievement, particularly narrative paragragph.

Abstract

The problem of this study was “Was it effective to use Six Thinking Hats Strategy in teaching reading narrative text to the eighth grade students of PGRI Junior High School 9 of Palembang?” The aim of this study was to find out whether or not it was effective to use Six Thinking Hats strategy in teaching reading narrative text to the eighth grade students of PGRI Junior High School 9 of Palembang.The population was the eighth grade students of PGRI Junior High School 9 of Palembang in academic year of 2018/2019. The sample was 36 students who were chosen by cluster random sampling. This study employed Pre- experimental design with the one-group pretest-posttest design. The data were collected through written test in form of Multiple choice which implemented in pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using matched t-test formula.The result of the study is found that the students’ average score in the         pre-test was 47,57 and the students’ average score in the post-test was 73,68. Based on the matched t-test calculation, it was found that the t-obtained was 4,854. The critical value of 5% significance level was 1.690. It showed that the      t-obtained was higher than the t-table. From this study it was found that teaching reading narrative text by using Six Thinking Hats strategy to the eighth grade students of PGRI Junior High School 9 of Palembang was effective.

Abstract

Abstract : This research aimed to give clear description and concrete about the students’ ability in writing English abstract of final report at Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Programme Study of Politeknik Sekayu.The ability to write a clear and concise abstract of final report was indispensable skill to writers; thus it was essential for students to be aware of linguistic aspects of writing. This research used secunder data which English abstract of final report written by students’ of at Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Programme Study at Politeknik Sekayu.Thus,  the sample of this research was taken with Simple random sampling, it was a descriptive qualitative research which aimed to analyze grammatical errors. The source of data in this research were documents taken from students’ final report. The data were collected by using coding sheets. The findings of this research showed that the most common grammatical errors found in writing English abstracts of final report were word order with 24%. The possible solutions to overcome students’ grammatical errors were using indirect method in teaching grammar and prioritizing grammar structures to teach. Keywords: grammatical errors, writing English abstract

Abstract

“Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”, by Thomas Gray is the main source data of this study. It is a poem of reflections – reflections of death, nature, the lots of marginal people, the poor, or the lower class which becomes the subject matter of the study. The objectives are to find out the concept of lower class in social discrimination. It is qualitative research. The research result show that the examples of discrimination found in Stanza 4,8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18. In this elegy, the social stratification formed by itself and the system is the closed system. The poor belongs to the lower class and always becones a focus of attention owing to their being wretched, powerless and illiterate. They are actually great in their low quality. All of these traits are beautifully exposed in the poem.
