Abstract

ABSTRAK Mortini, Asti Veto, 2015, The Correlation among the Fourth Semester Students’ Reading Attitude, Reading Comprehension Achievement, and Writing Achievement at English Education Study Program in PGRI University of Palembang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari (1) Apakah ada korelasi antara sikap membaca siswa dengan prestasi/hasil pemahaman membaca siswa?, (2) Apakah ada korelasi antara sikap membaca siswa dengan prestasi menulis siswa?, (3) Apakah ada kontribusi antara sikap membaca siswa terhadap prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa dan atauterhadap prestasi menulis siswa? Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester empat program study Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Palembang, dan 74 mahasiswa dijadikan sampel. Sampel di ambil dengan menggunakan Stratified Random Sampling. Distribusi data dianggap normal. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan perhitungan statistik uji normalitas yang menunjukkan bahwa p-output (0.084, 0.051, dan 0.076). Maka berdasarkan perhitungan Levene Statistic, ditemukan bahwa p-value lebih tinggi dari α (0.05). Analisis Homogenitas Uji berdasarkan analisis statistik, ditemukan bahwa p-value (0,603) lebih tinggi dari tingkat signifikansi (0,05). Ini berarti data sikap membaca siswa, prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa dan prestasi menulis siswa adalah homogen. Berdasarkan hasil perhitungan statistik menggunakan korelasi, ditemukan nilai yang signifikan (r) antara sikap membaca dan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa adalah 0.939 yang lebih dari α (0.05). Ini berarti bahwa H1 diterima. Sedangkan nilai signifikan (r) antara sikap membaca dan prestasi menulis siswa adalah 0,541 yang lebih dari α (0,05). Ini berarti bahwa H2 diterima. Penelitian ini juga menemukan kontribusi sikap membaca dan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa (r1) adalah 91,1%. Sementara kontribusi sikap membaca siswa terhadap prestasi menulis adalah 56.4%. Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out was any significant influence between the third semester students of University of PGRI Palembang majoring English Education who are taught using Short Message Service (SMS) texting in learning writing descriptive paragraph and those who are not. Quasi experimental method was used in this research. One group experimental and one control groups were as samples. Data were collected through written tests; pretest and posttest and analyzed them using independent sample test. The result showed t-obtained was greater (2.855) than t-table (1.990) at the significance level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=75. It means that there was a significant influence between the third semester students of University of PGRI Palembang majoring English Education who are taught using Short Message Service (SMS) texting in learning writing descriptive paragraph and those who are not. Keywords: Short Message Service Texting, writing, descriptive paragraph.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out was any significant influence in learning reading narrative text between the tenth grade students of Madyatama Vocational High School of Palembang who are taught through Beach Ball strategy and those who are not. This research used quasi experimental method. Two groups were as the sample; experimental and control groups. Data was collected through written tests; pretest and posttest. It was analyzed them using independent sample test. The result showed t-obtained was 5.800. It was higher than t-table (2.004) at the significance level p<0.05 in two tailed testing with df=54. It means that there was a significant influence between the tenth grade students of state Senior High School 4 of Palembang in learning reading narrative text who are taught through Beach Ball strategy and those who are not.Keywords: Beach Ball Strategy, Reading, Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstrak            Metode mengajar selalu digunakan guru bahasa Inggris dalam mengajarkan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Metode-metode yang digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar mempengaruhi hasil belajar. Metode juga merupakan komponen penting dalam dunia pendidikan dan pengajaran. Total physical response adalah salah satu metode yang bisa diterapkan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Metode TPR memungkinkan guru atau tenaga pengajar lainnya dalam membangun kalimat-kalimat perintah yang sifatnya biasa dan lebih menarik ataupun  bisa bersifat lucu untuk menarik perhatian dan minat siswa. Tentu saja, guru harus menguasai kelas dengan baik sebelum menerapkannya. Dalam metode TPR, para siswa akan membangun bentuk pola aturan yang benar selama proses atau kegiatan di dalam kelas. Guru memberikan kalimat dalam bentuk perintah dan mempraktikannya dengan siswa. Oleh karena itu, keterampilan berbicara lebih disampingkan dan keterampilan pemahaman siswa lebih diterapkan.  Kata Kunci : Metode Total, Physical Response, Action Verbs

Abstract

Integrating technology in learning English is needed nowadays. It can change traditional learning into modern or digital learning. Duolingo is an application that can be used to learn English. It can change the users’ perception about studying English.  The study aimed to describe the implementation of Duolingo application in translation and learning English, to find out the users’ perception about the Duolingo application, and to know the relevance criteria of Duolingo in learning English. This study used a qualitative method with 50 participants involved. The data were collected by having observation, questionnaires, and documentation. The result of observation reveals that the implementation of translation exercises was appropriate in learning English. There were two kinds of translation exercises, namely choosing the word and typewriting freely. The way it provided the translation exercises was useful in actual translation works. The users’ perception of the Duolingo application was that it was a good way to learn English using technology. Duolingo also helped the users for their English improvement. As a final point, Duolingo was relevant for learning English.

Abstract

The main problem in this research was “Is it effective to use Jeopardy Game in teaching reading descriptive text to the eighth grade students of state junior high school 20 of Palembang?’’ Therefore, the main purposes of this research was to find out whether or not teaching reading descriptive through Jeopardy Game to the Eighth Grade students of State High School 20 of Palembang is significantly effective. In doing this research, the researcher used pre experimental method (one group pre-test post-test design). The population was all students of the state grade of State Junior High School 20 of Palembang in the academic year 2012/2013. The data were got through a written test and analyzed by using the t-test formula. Based on the result of the data analyzed, it showed that, there was significantly difference between the students’ score in the pre-test and those in the post-test. The students’ average score in the post-test (70) was higher than the students’ average in the pre-test (53.8), and the result of the matched t-test was 8.53 at the level significance 0.05 in one tail testing with df (34-1)= 33, the value of the critical in the t-table is 1.692. The t-obtained was higher than t-table 1.692. It means that the Alternative hyporesearch (Ha)was accepted and Null Hyporesearch (Ho) was rejected. In other words, teaching reading descriptive text through Jeopardy Game to the eighth grade students of state junior high school 20 of Palembang was significantly effective.

Abstract

Students majoring in English language education need to have proficient writing skills which show wide range of cognitive and linguistics abilities. For that reason, news writing that includes techniques for writing good headlines, techniques for writing interesting headlines, and techniques for creating a comprehensive and in-depth news body is appropriate to facilitate that needs. The purpose of this research is to develop Moodle, Google Slides, and Power Point-based E-Learning aids for learning how to write news articles in writing for mass media course for English language education students. This study employs the 4D development model (Define, Design, Development, and Dissemination) to conduct R&D. This research uses a non-test instrument data collection strategy in the form of a questionnaire distributed to two material experts and two media experts. The results are as follows: a) the validation results by material experts received a score of 81.54 %, placing them in the very feasible category; b) the validation results by media experts received a score of 78.4 %, placing them in the feasible category. These results indicate that the E-Learning Moodle's learning materials are suitable to be used in the journalism course

Abstract

Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mengeksplorasi manfaat dan bagaimana Proyek Berbasis Learning (PBL) sebenarnya diterapkan dalam kelas ESP. Ini juga bertujuan untuk menyelidiki masalah yang timbul dalam kelas ESP bagi calon guru di Universitas PGRI Palembang. Mengajar kelas ESP harus mencakup secara teoritis dan praktis. Calon guru di Universitas PGRI Palembang cenderung memahami teori tetapi tidak memiliki ide dalam penerapannya dalam situasi sebenarnya. PBL dapat menjadi salah satu alternatif dalam pengajaran mata kuliah ESP dimana mahasiswa tidak hanya belajar teori tetapi juga membuat proyek untuk mengimplementasikan teori yang telah mereka dapatkan. Selain menyajikan teori, para mahasiswa mata kuliah ESP diminta merancang buku kuliah untuk bidang tertentu dari belajar. Buku-buku tersebut dirancang berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan sasaran itu mereka lakukan dengan mewawancarai dan mengamati situasi sasaran. Menugaskan proyek buku memungkinkan untuk meningkatkan kreativitas mahasiswa dalam merancang sebuah Buku kelas ESP fokus konten dan fokus bahasa. Ini juga bisa merangsang kemampuan mahasiswa dalam membuat desain dan template buku, namun, bimbingan dosen diperlukan karena beberapa mahasiswa bingung dalam menentukan dan menyusun soal latihan pada buku.

Abstract

Writing is a basic skill which must be possessed by the students. This skill is needed in every teaching and learning process in English lesson. It is not only to express imagination in the written language but also to develop students’ creativity, thus, good teaching writing strategy is required to increase the students’ motivation to write. The objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was any significant influence on students’ writing narrative paragraphs achievements to the students of Senior High School 12 Palembang who are taught by integrating face book group and those who are not. Quasi experimental method was used in this research. One group experimental and one control groups were as samples. Data were collected through written tests; pretest and posttest and analyzed them using independent sample test. The result showed t-obtained was greater (13.906) than t-table (1.990) at the significance level p<0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = 56. It means that there was any significant influence on students’ writing narrative paragraphs achievements to the students of Senior High School 12 Palembang who are taught by integrating face book group and those who are not.
