Abstract

This paper is investigating the semantic components of the metaphorical expressions of letters to editors found in Suara Merdeka daily newspaper by  contrasting  the semantic features of the source and the target of the metaphorical expressions compared to those of the non-metaphorical expressions to find out the ground existing. Nonparticipant observation is used to collect and select the data. Referential identity and distributional methods with substitution and paraphrasing techniques are used to analyze the data. Abstract

The spread of English in Indonesia carries an inherent philosophy with it. This essay will focus on how the view that ‘there is no absolute truth’ is ingrained in the linguistic modality of English. Furthermore it will show how this philosophy of modality may inevitably shape a student’s character since it allows people to create the shared truths they need or to downgrade the truths of others, with all the potential positive or negative consequences. Finally this essay will also show how a visual picture, descriptive text, and dialogue could serve as teaching aids to shape a student’s character through classroom drills in such modality signifiers as modal auxiliaries, frequency adverbs, reporting frames, tenses etc. On the whole this essay relies heavily on Halliday’s Functional Grammar, von Wright’s Deontic Logic, and Hodge and Kress’s Semiotics while the topic of the picture, text and dialogue heavily centers on the mysterious Alhambra Citadel of Granada

Abstract

This paper aims to elaborate cognitivism and its implications to the second language learning. Cognitive theory or approach views the learner as a thinking being and an active processor of information. Thus, learning is a process in which the learner actively tries to analyze the situations where the application of the rule would be appropriate and to make sense of data. In other words, we learn by thinking about and trying to make sense of what we see, hear and feel.  In order to get a clear picture of the cognitive theory in relation to second language learning, other related theories were also described briefly from the historical points of view. In general cognitivism can be grouped under the innatist model which is also known as ‘nativist’. ‘mentalism’ (thinking as rule-governed activity), ‘rationalism’. The implications of cognitive theories can be revealed in the basic teaching techniques which cover activities such as problem-based solving activity, discovery learning, cognitive strategies, project-based learning, etc.

Abstract

Abstract

This article is on the social and cultural contents of textbooks for foreign language learners. Some textbooks, published for foreign learners in various languages, are selected in random way before being observed carefully. The basic assumption is that most (or even all) textbooks will introduce to the prospective learners some socio-cultural information embedded in the target language which, inevitably, the learners will have to deal with. The sociolinguistics has it that no language can be separated from the socio-cultural issues. The fact enables any language to survive and linger on. Therefore, all good textbooks must contain the socio-cultural issues relevant to the current language usage in daily interactions
