Abstract

This article discusses the role of Wan Abdurachman in formulating the foundation of the Indonesian state in the Constitutional Assembly from 1956 to 1959. The research employs the historical method, which includes four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The historical sources were obtained from the National Archives, the National Library, and the official website of the MPR RI. The findings of this study reveal that Wan Abdurachman was the most prominent Islamic figure in Lampung, who, since his youth, was active in nationalist movement organizations based on Islam (the Indonesian Sarekat Islam Party), which made it easy for him to connect with HOS Tjokroaminoto, who developed the ideology of Islamic socialism. This ideology was advocated as the foundation of the Indonesian state in the Constitutional Assembly. This is the important contribution of this study: that Tjokroaminoto formulated Islamic socialism during the national movement period, and Wan Abdurachman fought for it to become the foundation of the Indonesian state in the Constitutional Assembly.

Abstract

Minangkabau has a cultural diversity that is thick with customs. This can be seen from various aspects of people's lives as such kinship system, marriage rituals and social norms. The focus of this research is related to marriage regarding Beli Suami. There are many cultural disputes about Beli Suami in Minangkabau customs, so there are several conflicts regarding this perception. This research aims to analyze the culture of buying husbands in the Minangkabau tradition from an Islamic perspective. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods to explore how this practice functions in Minangkabau society and how it conforms to the principles of Islamic law. This research found that although the practice of buying husbands has its basis in strong Minangkabau customs. However, there are several inconsistencies aspects of Islamic law, especially in terms of the understanding of dowry and the rights of husband and wife. The results of the analysis shows that although this custom provides flexibility in determining the downturn, there are challenges in balancing customs and Islamic law which emphasizes the principles of equality and justice in marriage relationships. This study suggests the need for harmonization between normal practices and Islamic law so that these traditions can be accepted and implemented fairly in a modern context. Additionally, recommendations are given to involve ulama and traditional leaders in formulating appropriate guidelines so that this tradition can be preserved without ignoring the principles of sharia.

Abstract

This article evaluates Ismail Raji al-Faruqi's book Christian Ethics: A Historical and Systematic Analysis of Its Dominant Ideas. The study looks at Al-Faruqi’s approach to comparative religion, especially his concept of “Epochè” and his critique of exclusivity in Jewish and Christian ethics. Using library-based research and deductive analysis, the article explores how Al-Faruqi highlights universal moral values and deals with the challenges of interfaith dialogue. The findings show that while Al-Faruqi stresses ethics as a shared human concern, he also confirms Islam’s comprehensive ethical framework. This study shows how Al-Faruqi’s work contributes to better understanding among different religious communities and offers methods for improving interreligious dialogue and cooperation.

Abstract

This article conducts an in-depth analysis of the signs of Muhammad's prophethood as presented in Ibn Sa‘d’s Kitab al-Tabaqat, using a historiographical approach to explore these narratives’ significance in early Islamic history. It seeks to identify and categorize the range of signs and miracles attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, investigate Ibn Sa‘d’s interpretive techniques and historical methods, and examine how these signs help construct prophetic authority and Islamic cultural memory. By analyzing each narrative in both its historical context and its theological and literary dimensions, the study addresses key issues such as Ibn Sa‘d’s perspective as a historian, his interpretive biases, and the ways these narratives reinforce Islamic belief in Muhammad’s divine mission. The findings reveal that Ibn Sa‘d’s portrayal of prophetic signs operates on several levels: as a testament to divine intervention, an assertion of the Prophet's unique spiritual status, and a framework for defining the sacred in Islamic tradition. This article argues that Ibn Sa‘d’s narratives provide critical insights into Islamic historical methodology and the formation of religious identity, enhancing our understanding of the intersections of history, theology, and memory in shaping early Islamic religio-cultural consciousness.

Abstract

The character of Semar in Javanese puppetry is a unique figure who bridges Javanese philosophy and Islamic teachings. This study explores the synthesis between the two traditions through an analysis of Semar's characteristics and teachings. This study aims to (1) analyze how the character of Semar represents the synthesis between Javanese cultural philosophy and Islamic principles, (2) examine its implications for understanding cultural acculturation and (3) its relevance in the context of contemporary Indonesia. This study applied the library research method. Data sources included literature on puppetry, Javanese philosophy, and Islamic teachings. The analysis was conducted by using a hermeneutic, comparative, and semiotic approach. The study result reveal that (1) a significant correlation between the characteristics and teachings of Semar and the basic principles of Islam. Concepts such as "manunggaling kawula gusti" and "memayu hayuning bawana" are in harmony with the teachings of tauhid and khalifah fil ardh in Islam. Simplicity, honesty, and social criticism that characterize Semar are also in line with Islamic values. The synthesis reflected in the character of Semar shows the flexibility of Islam in adapting to local culture without losing the essence of its teachings. (2) This has important implications for understanding Javanese-Islamic cultural acculturation and offers an inclusive and tolerant model of religiosity in the context of contemporary Indonesia. (3) This study also reveals the relevance of this synthesis in facing the challenges of modernity and globalization, as well as its potential in building a national identity that is rooted in local wisdom but open to universal values.
