Abstract

The issue of Islam and human rights has become important issue in Indonesia at least since the last two decades. Indonesian Muslims have developed two different approaches to human rights: in complete agreement with the declaration of universal human rights; and in resistance to that declaration and developing understanding that Islam encompasses human rights values. The article argues for its part that human rights are not absolutely universal, because they are based chiefly on Western values, structures, ethics and morality. For that, it is reasonable to question their universality. The present article focuses on how Indonesian Muslim intellectuals conceive of human rights and Islamic values as they perceive the two. Specifically, it focuses on four principal issues in human rights discourse: freedom of opinion, religious freedoms, rights of women, and criminal law. The authors reveal in the conclusion that although some Indonesian Muslim intellectuals admit that universal human rights are truly universal, they still see differences in certain cases, due to differences in socio-cultural background. They have tried to affect a synthesis between the universality and particularity of both Islamic and universal human rights in order to make both fit within the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This article deals with the interrelation between Islamic fundamentalism and other ideological orientations of contemporary Islamist movements, such as Islamism, revivalism, radicalism, salafism, and political Islam. It tries to explore the similarities in their characteristics as well as their differences in the focuses and strategies of the movements. This articles argues that these Islamist movements express their ideological aspirations in different ways: some try to build an Islamic state or even a universal Islamic caliphate (political Islam), while others emphasize much more on the implementation of shari’ah in the level of individuals and society, apart from state (salafis). However, they did not succeed yet in transforming the political landscape of the Muslim world in accordance with their ideological framework.

Abstract

This article seeks to explore the mystical thoughts of two influential sufis, Ruzbihan Baqli and Haydar Amuli, on sainthood (walāyah). It argues that both sufis represent a typical flavor of Sufism, in that the former placed emphasis on Persianate cultural vocabularies, while the latter was characterized by the integration of Sufism and Shiism and the incorporation of the philosophical or metaphysical views of Ibn ‘Arabī into Imāmī Shī‘ī mysticism. Although Baqli was not the first to develop the concept of walāyah, his exposition of the issue exhibits a typically Persianate symbolism of sufism. His mystical experiences, based on his spiritual visions, confirm that the wali like him occupies a special status next to the prophets, and in particular the Prophet Muhammad. Amuli asserted that the seal of universal walāyah is ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib, and that the twelfth imam or the Mahdi was the seal of Muhammadan walāyah. This view is different from Ibn ‘Arabī’s that the seal of universal walāyah is Jesus. Both mystics’ views on walāyah can be traced back to their predecessors and their legacies can be revealed from the following sufis after both respectively.

Abstract

This article aims at diagnosing the development of Ummah while Muslims are living as minority in Australia. Through a sociological approach, qualitatively, some issues considered in understanding the development are practices of secularism, multiculturalism and protection of human rights. This academic framework in comprehending the development might be claimed as a new trajectory of sociological exploration. Accordingly, this study is proposed to become a preliminary research on Muslims’ freedom of religion living in secular country. This article finds that Australia is a state that consistently has protected its citizens’ freedom of religion and the Australian government, in dealing with social and religious issues, and law enforcement, has worked professionally. However, Muslims have faced challenging realities of cases of discrimination coming from fundamentalist Christians. The cases, indeed, can be mitigated through inter-religious dialogue and cooperation. This article argues that, so far, the development of Ummah in the country has been running well. Under the protection of a secular state, minority Muslims in Australian multicultural societies can enjoy their freedom of religion. Practices of inter-religious tolerance are stronger than the tensions and conflicts have happened..

Abstract

This article seeks to explore Niẓām al-Mulk’s political career and his contribution to Islamic political thought. As a prominent wazīr of two Seljuq sultans, Alp Arslan and Malikshah, Niẓām al-Mulk played an important role in running the government for almost 30 years. His adherence to Sunni theological doctrines and Shafi'i school of law has made him a defender of Sunnism against other sects like Ismailism. As a political figure and thinker, Niẓām al-Mulk regarded justice and religion as a fundamental basis for the state. In Siyāsat-nāma, he elaborates many political bodies needed to build a strong state and government, such as wazīr, qādī, tax collectors, military, and intelligent agency. It can be argued that Niẓām al-Mulk’s political thought as formulated in his work, Siyāsat-nāma (the Book of Government), is based on his political and governmental experiences, his understanding of Islamic doctrines, and Persian political traditions.

Abstract

Abstract Hydroponic control system is a system that works for control variables that affect growth plant to get it grow optimally so produce maximum results. One of the important parameters is level acidity (pH) solution nutrition , where pH is very take effect to solubility and availability element nutrient in solution nutrition . At the optimal value that is 5 , 5 > pH> 6.5 all element are in good condition so that easy absorbed by plants. This research discuss about how designing a control system and monitoring of pH automatic with applying control PID (Proportional Integral Derevative). As the system is designed to maintain pH at value 6.0 with use Arduino Uno as microcontroller and a pH meter kit as input and two DC motor pump as the actuator. The process of designing this PID controller uses root locus method and obtained that all root is located next to left field s. The best system response performance from PID control implementation with pole = -4.23 is at value Kp = 2.0826, Ki = 1, Kd = 0.2462. Testing done with setpoint pH 6.0 which obtained 2 83 seconds settling time and steady state error = 2 %........................................................... Abstract

In the 20th century this distance is still a constraint in efforts to measure and retrieve data. In an efficiency effort, a long distance measuring device is required. One method to measure from a distance is to use the Telemetry method. Telemetry is a method for measuring a variable in which monitoring is done remotely. The use of telemetry can be used to transmit data from the flowmeter sensor to be received by the receiver. This study discusses the effect of obstacles on transmitter work to send data to the receiver and test the accuracy of the flowmeter sensor. From this study it can be concluded that the effective distance of data transmission depends on the obstacle, the farthest distance is the moment without obstacles, then decreases when there is a hitch, and will decrease again when one receiver or transmitter is placed in a closed room. And for the accuracy of the sensor, the percentage of accuracy is low at the time of the slow water current, and vice versa high accuracy is obtained when the water current is fast. Based on the research we poured in this journal, water flow measurements using RF Arduino-based 433MHz Modules can measure the flow of water at a distance of up to 35meter with an average error of only 4.1%.
