Abstract

The transformation of teenage prostitution through digital platforms has created the Lady Companion (LC) phenomenon involving Generation Z youth in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the socio-religious construction of LC in Marindal, Deli Serdang, a buffer zone of Medan City, by integrating the dimensions of Islamic religious values within the framework of Berger and Luckmann's (1966) social construction theory. This qualitative research using a case study approach involved eight informants: four adolescent perpetrators of LC aged 16-18, two community members, one community leader, and one religious leader. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and non-participatory observation from July to December 2025, then analyzed using thematic analysis. This study found three things; First, there are four factors driving adolescent involvement in LC; (1) structural factors (weak family supervision); (2) economic factors (survival and consumer pressures); (3) peer influence (in-group recruitment and normalization); (4) and the role of social media (content exposure and transaction facilities). Second, the social construction process takes place through (1) externalization (initial exposure to peers and digital media); (2) objectivation (normalization of LC as a common reality in peer groups); (3) and internalization (acceptance of LC as a self-identity and redefinition of self-esteem, sexuality, and work). Third, Islamic religious values have also experienced a shift from absolute moral norms to secondary ones in the face of economic pragmatism. Theoretically, this study expands the theory of social construction by showing digital media as a dominant agent of externalization in the digital era and integrating the religious dimension in the analysis of social construction. Practically, the findings imply the need for an integrated approach involving strengthening the family economy, digital literacy based on religious values, and revitalization of religious institutions with a contextual approach.

Abstract

The Haul tradition of Kyai Gede Ceper in Sembungjambu Village, Pekalongan, is an annual religious ritual that persists and has a significant influence on the formation of community morality. This study aims to analyze how the series of haul rituals, cultural symbols, and social practices within it function as a means of tradition based moral education. Using a qualitative approach with observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation, this study is analyzed using Clifford Geertz's symbolic perspective to interpret the symbolic meanings that emerge from ritual practices. Research results show that the haul tradition encompasses two main categories of morality: spiritual morality, manifested through the recitation of khotmil Qur'an, tahlil, and mass haul; and social morality, manifested through socializing, cross-generational participation, and community organizational solidarity. These ritual symbols form webs of meaning that affirm religious identity as well as the social ethics of the community. Furthermore, the strategy of collective involvement of all layers of society keeps haul relevant as a transgenerational educational mechanism that transmits moral values in dailylife.

Abstract

This study aims to highlight the idea of religious moderation as a tool to foster tolerance within Indonesia's diversity, while also identifying obstacles and providing practical recommendations for its implementation in society. Desk research, which makes use of a variety of literary sources, including publications, scientific papers, and other pertinent materials, is the technique employed. The notion, dynamics, and implementation of religious moderation in Indonesia are described through a descriptive analysis of the data. The findings demonstrate that religious moderation is essential for preserving religious harmony in the varied Indonesian community, especially as a strategy to shield society from the effects of extremism, radicalism, and intolerance. But obstacles to its implementation persist, including a restricted comprehension of religion, the impact of extremist ideologies, and precarious social circumstances. Moderate religious education, interfaith discourse, and policies promoting diversity and inclusion as the cornerstone of a harmonious national life are the means through which this research comes to the conclusion that religious moderation can be strengthened.

Abstract

The traditional ceremony of mengerumbang is one of the important traditional rites in Pakpak society, carried out by elderly individuals as a form of repayment of traditional debts to hula-hula before death. This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning, social structure, and socio-cultural function of the mengerumbang ceremony in the context of contemporary Pakpak society and to observe the role of this tradition. The research method uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and ritual practitioners, and documentary studies of local customs and practices. The results of the study show that mengerumbang is not merely a customary ritual, but a social mechanism to maintain the honour of individuals and families, strengthen the continuity of the sulang silima kinship system, support economic redistribution through customary gifts, and legitimise a person's social status within the Pakpak customary structure. Furthermore, changes in ritual practices due to the influence of religion and modernisation indicate a dynamic process of cultural adaptation without eliminating the core meaning of the custom. Thus, mengerumbang functions as a space for negotiation between tradition, identity, and social change in Pakpak society.

Abstract

AbstractThis research focuses on the dynamics of religiosity in rural communities, which are formed through social interactions and daily religious practices. This phenomenon is interesting to study because religiosity is not only interpreted as a form of individual devotion but also as a result of social processes that occur in community life. The purpose of this research is to understand how the people of Kenjo Village, Glagah District, Banyuwangi, construct and interpret their religiosity through social construction. The approach used was qualitative with a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of religious activities in the community. The results indicate that the religiosity of the Kenjo Village community is formed through three dialectical stages, as proposed by Berger and Luckmann: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The externalization process is evident in religious activities such as tahlilan (religious gatherings), pengajian (religious study groups), and selamatan (celebration ceremonies), which serve as a means of expressing spiritual and social values. Objectivation occurs when these practices are accepted as social norms passed down across generations. Meanwhile, internalization occurs through family education and religious institutions, which instill religious meaning as part of the community's social identity. The conclusion of this study indicates that the religiosity of rural communities is not static, but rather is continuously formed and renewed through social and cultural interactions. These findings confirm that religion has a crucial social function in maintaining community cohesion while strengthening the construction of collective meaning in life.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between religious obedience and power within religious institutions, focusing on the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo. The objective of this research is to analyze how the internalization of religious obedience functions as a form of power legitimation for religious authorities and its implications for social relations and institutional governance within pesantren. This study employs a qualitative approach using a sociological case study method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively using Max Weber’s theory of power legitimacy and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic domination. The findings indicate that the strong internalization of religious obedience reinforces the charismatic authority of the kiai and produces hierarchical and asymmetrical social relations between leaders and santri. When religious obedience is not accompanied by critical awareness, transparency, and accountability, such legitimacy may obscure structural and ethical weaknesses in institutional management, ultimately leading to a crisis of trust and institutional disintegration. This study emphasizes the importance of balancing religious obedience with social control to prevent religious values from becoming instruments of power domination.
