Abstract

Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji pemikiran Sayyid Usman tentang etika pendidikan dalam perspektif Islam. Studi ini perlu dilakukan mengingat belum banyak studi tentang tokoh lokal dari Nusantara yang berkontribusi dalam bidang pendidikan Islam. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan yang mengandalkan metode analisis isi, dan mengajukan temuan bahwa Sayyid Usman menulis sebuah karya dalam bidang etika yang berjudul Âdâb al-Insân. Kitab ini relatif kurang diteliti dalam sudut pandang pendidikan Islam. Berdasarkan telaah terhadap naskah Nusantara ini, penulisnya menegaskan bahwa pendidikan merupakan solusi utama dalam rangka memperbaiki adab orang-orang jahat dengan mengajarkan serangkaian adab yang melingkupi aspek kepribadian, sosial dan profesionalitas. Studi ini berkontribusi dalam penguatan gugusan literatur dalam bidang pendidikan Islam mengingat tidak banyak tokoh Nusantara yang dikenalkan dan dikaji di perguruan tinggi Islam.Abstract: Paedagogical Narrative from Betawi Land: Sayyid Usman’s Thoughts on Educational Ethics. This study examines Sayyid Usman’s thinking concerning the ethics of education in an Islamic perspective. This study is necessary considering the scarcity of research on local scholars who have contributed to the field of Islamic education. This article is the result of library research that relies on the method of content analysis, and proposes findings that Sayyid Usman wrote a work in the field of ethics, entitled Âdâb al-Insân. This book is relatively under-researched in the perspective of Islamic education. Based on a review of this archipelago script, the author emphasizes that education is the main solution in improving the ethics of bad people by teaching a series of âdâb which covers aspects of personality, social and professionalism. This study contributes to the strengthening of the literature in the field of Islamic education considering that there are not many Nusantara figures introduced and studied in Islamic Higher Education institutions.Kata Kunci: pendidikan, etika, Nusantara, Betawi, Sayyid Usman

Abstract

Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji gagasan pendidikan Al Ittihadiyah meliputi bidang pendidikan dan metode pendidikan. Studi ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kelangkaan referensi tentang organisasi asal Sumatera Timur ini, terutama gerakan dan gagasan Al Ittihadiyah dalam bidang pendidikan. Studi ini merupakan hasil penelitian kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari kegiatan studi dokumen yang dianalisis dengan metode analisis isi dan diperkaya dengan menggunakan teknik wawancara. Kajian ini mengajukan temuan bahwa Al Ittihadiyah berkontribusi bagi pengembangan pendidikan Islam di Sumatera Timur, dimulai dari era Kolonial sampai pasca kemerdekaan. Sebagaimana organisasi Islam pembaharu lain, Al Ittihadiyah sebelum masa kemerdekaan telah melakukan pembaruan kurikulum dan metode pendidikan, sehingga organisasi ini berperan dalam memperbaiki kualitas pendidikan kaum Muslim di Nusantara. Tetapi belakangan ini, terlihat organisasi ini relatif kurang memainkan peran dalam pengembangan pendidikan Islam mengingat lembaga-lembaga pendidikan tidak lagi dikelola oleh organisasi secara sentralistis.Abstract: Al Ittihadiyah Education Modernisation Movement in East Sumatra, 1935-1975. This study examines the ideas of Al Ittihadiyah’s education in the fields of education and education methods. This study was motivated by the scarcity of references about organizations from East Sumatra, especially Al Ittihadiyah’s movements and ideas in the field of education. This study is the result of qualitative research. Data obtained from document study activities which was then analyzed by the method of content analysis and enriched using interview techniques. This study proposes findings that Al Ittihadiyah contributed to the development of Islamic education in East Sumatra, starting from the Colonial era to post-independence. As with other reforming Islamic organizations, Al Ittihadiyah prior to independence had carried out reforms in curriculum and educational methods, so that this organization played a role in improving the quality of education of Muslims in the archipelago. However, in the latest development, it appears that this organization has relatively little role to play in the development of Islamic education since educational institutions are no longer managed by organizations centrally.Kata Kunci: Al Ittihadiyah, pendidikan, Sumatera Timur, Melayu

Abstract

Abstrak: Pada Maret 2017, pemerintah Indonesia menetapkan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam Indonesia, yang ditandai dengan pembangunan sebuah monumen sederhana yang diresmikan langsung oleh Presiden RI. Para sejarawan Muslim memberikan respons terhadap kebijakan tersebut, ada yang mendukung dan ada yang tidak. Penulis merasa penting untuk sekali lagi menekankan bahwa Peureulak di pantai timur Sumatra adalah kerajaan Islam tertua di Indonesia bahkan Asia Tenggara. Sesungguhnya ini sudah merupakan kesimpulan dari sejumlah kajian para sejarawan. Sebab itu, dari perspektif akademik, penetapan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam masih perlu dikaji dan ditinjau kembali. Sebab meskipun Barus menjadi lokasi pertama yang menerima Islam pertama sekali, tetapi masyarakat Muslim di sana tidak membentuk kekuatan politik, melainkan Peureulak lah yang sukses mencapai kekuatan politik Islam pertama di Nusantara.Abstract: Peureulak Sultanate and the Discourse on ‘Zero Point of Nusantara’s Islamic Civilization’. In March 2017, Indonesian Government officially recognized Barus, a historical small city at the western coast of Sumatra, as the zero point of Indonesian Islamic Civilization. This recognition was marked by a relatively modest monument, inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Muslim historians responded differently: some agree and others disagree. The present author finds it very important to underline once again that Peureulak Sultanate at the eastern coast of Aceh was the first sizeable Islamic Kingdom of not just the Indonesia archipelago but also of the whole Southeast Asian archipelago. As a matter of fact, this has been the conclusion of several historical studies. Therefore, from scholarly point of view, the placement of this important monument at Barus needs to be studied and revisited. While Barus was indeed the first point of the arrival of Islam, the Muslim community there did not form any sizeable socio-political force. Peureulak, on the other hand, was successful in doing so.Kata Kunci: Peureulak, Aceh, Nusantara, politik

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas polemik antara Sayyid Usman Betawi dan Syekh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau tentang pelaksanaan salat Jumat di dua masjid di Palembang. Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan memanfaatkan metode analisis isi. Kajian ini dimulai dari pengungkapan biografi kedua ulama dan polemik kedua ulama dalam bidang fikih, khususnya tentang salat Jumat. Perdebatan ini memang menyita perhatian Sayyid Usman yang menulis sepuluh karya tentang objek yang diperdebatkan. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi kritik tidak saja berlaku pada ulama di era klasik, tetapi juga ulama Nusantara di era Kolonial. Perdebatan di antara dua ulama dalam satu persoalan terjadi pada satu masa tetapi berbeda tempat. Studi ini berkontribusi bagi pengkajian hukum Islam di era kolonial Belanda, sekaligus telah membuktikan bahwa ulama-ulama Nusantara berkontribusi dalam pengkajian hukum Islam di Nusantara.Abstract: Polemic of Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about Friday Prayer. This study discusses the polemic between Sayyid Usman Betawi and Shaykh Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau about carrying out Friday prayers in two mosques in Palembang. This article is the result of library research using the content analysis method. This study begins with the disclosure of the biographies of the two ulemas and polemics of the two scholars in the field of jurisprudence, especially regarding Friday prayers. This debate indeed caught the attention of Sayyid Usman, who wrote ten works on the debated objects. This study shows that the tradition of criticism not only applies to the ulama in the classical era, but also the scholars of the Archipelago in the Colonial era. The debate between the two scholars in one problem occurred at one time but at a different place. This study contributes to the study of Islamic law in the Dutch colonial era, while also proving that the archipelago’s scholars contributed to the study of Islamic law in the archipelago region.Kata Kunci: fikih, ulama, naskah, Haramain, Nusantara

Abstract

Abstrak: Studi ini mengkaji perkembangan ilmu falak di Nusantara. Perkembangan studi falak memang relatif tertinggal jauh dari perkembangannya di pusat-pusat peradaban Islam seperti Damaskus, Baghdad, Kairo dan Cordova. Ilmu falak baru berkembang di Kepulauan Nusantara sejak abad 19-20 M. Penulisan karya-karya ilmu falak oleh ulama Nusantara abad 19-20 pun lebih didasari oleh pemenuhan kebutuhan ibadah sehari-hari, khususnya salat dan puasa. Dalam konteks ini, penggambaran historiografi dan transmisi perkembangan ilmu falak dari Timur Tengah ke Nusantara masih terhitung sebagai kajian terlantar. Karena itu, diperlukan kajian komprehensif tentang perkembangan studi ilmu falak di Indonesia. Sebagai studi awal, artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian kepustakaan dengan pendekatan sejarah dimana datanya didasarkan pada telaah dokumen. Kajian ini mengemukakan bahwa ilmu falak mulai berkembang di Nusantara mulai abad ke-19, dimana para ulama Nusantara mendalami ilmu tersebut dari Timur Tengah dengan ragam motivasi, dan kemudian mereka mengembangkannya di tanah kelahiran dan mewariskan sejumlah karya dalam bidang ini.Abstract: Historiography of the Science of Astronomy in Indonesian Archipelago: History, Motivation and Early Figures. This study examines the development of astronomy in Indonesian archipelago which was relatively left behind by its development in the centers of Islamic civilization such as Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo and Cordova. As a matter of fact, astronomy did not develop in the Archipelago until in the 19th and 20th centuries, when some works on the field were identified. These works of the 19th and 20th century scholars mostly fulfilled the needs of daily worship, especially prayer and fasting. The historiography of astronomy in Indonesia and its transmission from the Middle East present an interesting field of research that has not been. The present article is a result of a preliminary library research focusing on history, motivation, and the early scholars of the field. Apparently, local scholars studied astronomy in different seats of knowledge in the Middle East and then brought it home. In order to meet local need they authored several books on the field which need to be be studied further in the coming years.Kata Kunci: astronomi, ulama, Nusantara, Timur Tengah
