Abstract

Pronunciation is the production of speech sounds for communication. It is the most difficult area of English. This study was conducted under the consideration that pronouncing English words plays an important role. Because of the differences between English and Indonesian pronunciation, many students pronounce English words incorrectly. Data from the Phonetic of English and the rule of how to pronounce English words has been crucial in the development of Phonetics theory throughout its recent past. Explaining the use of English song can increase the pronunciation ability to the students of Unswagati Cirebon in question.

Abstract

This case study aims at investigating the implementation of Lesson Study at English Education Department of a private university in Indonesia. Particularly, it reveals the activities of lesson study and teachers prolonged engagement in reflection activities. This study provides worthwhile chance for teachers to create a learning community in which they can develop their knowledge as professionals. There were four speaking lecturers, one lecturer as a model and others as participants, who worked collaboratively to formulate learning goals, lesson plan, classroom observation, teaching learning reflection, revision of the lesson for improvement, and re-teaching the revised lesson. The data were collected from the classroom observation, interview, community discussions, and reflection in two cycles. The findings reveal that the activities of Lesson Study facilitate the lecturers in designing proper teaching objectives and materials. Furthermore, it also can be regarded as a platform for teachers to have a learning community in which they can share and develop their teaching qualification.

Abstract

This research entitled “The Effectiveness of TTW (Think-Talk-Write) Strategy in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text. TTW (Think-Talk-Write) strategy is one of strategy in teaching learning process, TTW (Think-Talk-Write) strategy one of cooperative learning. Think-Talk-Write (TTW) Strategy is starting from involvement of students in thinking or dialogue with it self after reading process. Then talk and share ideas (sharing) with friend before writing. One group consist of 4-6 students, in this group of students requested making notes, explaining, listening and sharing ideas with friends and express them through writing. The problem of the research is “To find out the effectiveness TTW (ThinkTalk-Write) strategy in teaching writing descriptive text?” The population in the research is the second grade students of UNSWAGATI CIREBON. The writer takes two classes of the second grade students as the sample from this research which were divided into two groups; experimental group (7AB) and control group (7CD). The instruments of collecting data are tests; pre-test and post-test. To analyze of data, the writer used a quasiexperimental design. The writer gave writing test to gather the data. There were pre-test and post-test. The formula that was used analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was significance difference between students’ score in experimental group and control group.

Abstract

This study was aimed to know the influence of student’s language learningstrategies used towards their achievement in structure IV and the most strategy used. It is done in responding the fact, most of the students do not aware of their learning strategies. It makes them difficult understanding the knowledge transferred. By using descriptive method, this study used document test and SILL questionnaire as the instrument of the data. Meanwhile, in analyzing the data collected, the writer used SPSS simple linear regression (Muijs.200:143). The result of the study showed the influence of L2 student’s strategies is significantly weak towards their achievement in structure IV. While the most strategies used was metacognitive strategy. It is because so many factors influence student’s achievement, such as student’s ability, learning style, and teacher’s methodology used. Therefore, it is teacher’s task to motivate students aware of learning strategy used, so they could get well understanding.

Abstract

Reading is one of the important subjects in learning foreign language. Based on the curriculum 2014 in English Department, reading has some series. In order to get satisfying result of students in reading comprehension, the lecturer should know about the students’ achievement in comprehending the text. By knowing students’ achievement in reading for interpretation, the lecturer will know what they will do for the next and what should the lecturer give more attention to. This research is aimed to know the students’ achievement in comprehending the text. The subject of this research is the first year students of English department.This research is expected to give contribution for some aspects. For the students, it is expected to give information and feedback to the students about their competence in reading. For the teacher, this research is expected to give information for the lecturer about the students’ error in comprehending the text.

Abstract

This research is intended to analyze the repetition in the body text of shampoo advertisements. The objectives of this research are: first, to describe what types of repetitions are used in the body text of shampoo advertisements. Second, to find out which repetition is most often used in the body text of shampoo advertisements. Third, to find out why certain repetition is most often used in the body text of shampoo advertisements. This is a qualitative research. Therefore, it uses descriptive method with the theories of repetition proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976), Renkema (1993), Hoey (1991) and Halliday (1994), the theories of discourse proposed by Halliday (1985), Renkema (1993) and Nunan (1993), and the theories of advertisement proposed by Cook (1992) and Moi (1997). At the end of the analyses the writer found that the repetitions in the body text of shampoo advertisements are classified into simple repetition and complex repetition. Simple repetition is the most dominant types of repetition that used in the body text of shampoo advertisements because the use of simple repetition in the body text of shampoo advertisements is very important to make the readers or consumers understand and remember the name of the products or brands and the usage of products. It also makes the relationship between the sentences in the body text of shampoo advertisement clear and more communicative.

Abstract

ESP course design model specifically in communicative speaking skill is very assential to be applied at vocational schools (SMK), because the students of these schools are prepared to work. In this case they have to know English well especially speaking. Moreover, ESP course approach designed based on the two fundamental principals mainly theoretical and pragmatics, and some of supported theories as well. Research objective is to know if the students of vocational schools which become a selected research is SMK Pariwisata Kosgoro at Jl Perjuangan Cirebon, are eager to accept that ESP course is one of their needs, in order they can improve their English particularly in communicative speaking skill. Meanwhile, the used research method is quantitative one.

Abstract

In this paper the writer tries to analyze the motor vehicle advertisement texts from pragmatics point of view through classifying and describing the speech act types. Since this research is a qualitative, the writer uses descriptive method with speech act theory of pragmatics from Cutting and Yule. The writer collects the data from www.adsoftheworld.com, www.adslogans.co.uk and www.textart.ru, March 18th 2014. In analyzing data, the writer classified the data into table list. The classification is divided into speech act types and speech act levels, they are locutionary act as the ad texts and illocutionary act as the advertisers intention behind.  At the end of the research is found that related to the purpose of the ad in conveying its audience, there are representative and directive of speech act types. Representative are those kinds of speech act that state what the speaker believes to be the case or not and directive those kinds of speech acts that the speakers use to get someone else to do something. Therefore, the research hopefully brings about more comprehension on the motor vehicle advertisements which are often found in motor vehicle advertisements texts.
