Abstract

This study reexamines Kejatuhan dan Hati (1950) by Siti Rukiah Kertapati as a foundational yet neglected work in Indonesian literary modernity. Departing from the masculinist and nationalist revolutionary narratives of its time, the novel articulates postcolonial melancholy through emotional interiority, intimate loss, and the crisis of female subjectivity. Using qualitative textual analysis informed by feminist narratology and postcolonial theory, the study investigates how Rukiah’s fragmented, epistolary form constructs a feminine interiority that resists nationalist and patriarchal ideologies. The analysis draws on the critiques of gendered silencing by Chandra Talpade Mohanty and Trinh T. Minh-ha to interpret Susi’s psychological fragmentation as an act of affective and epistemic resistance. The results reveal that Rukiah transforms vulnerability and melancholy into political agency, redefining emotion as a site of historical meaning. Her narrative techniques—fragmentation, introspection, and affective honesty—subvert the masculine heroism of socialist realism, asserting tenderness as a radical feminist aesthetic. The article also traces the novel’s critical reception, from early marginalization to later reevaluation by scholars such as Annabel Teh Gallop and Yerry Wirawan. As an affective archive of postcolonial disillusionment and feminine resistance, Kejatuhan dan Hati emerges as a politically potent reimagining of nationhood through gendered emotion.

Abstract

This study examines how religion contributes to the construction of gender stereotypes in Afghan society as represented in Homeira Qaderi’s memoir Dancing in the Mosque (2020). The memoir illustrates how patriarchal norms legitimized through religious discourse restrict women’s education, autonomy, and social participation. To analyze this issue, the research applies Susan Lanser’s feminist narratology, which emphasizes the mimetic function of narrative and its connection to lived reality. Through a close reading of narrative elements such as voice, focalization, and symbolic space, the study demonstrates that religion is often instrumentalized to justify cultural practices that sustain gender inequality. At the same time, Qaderi’s act of storytelling functions as a form of resistance, breaking silences, and challenging patriarchal authority by amplifying women’s voices. These findings show that feminist narratology provides an effective framework for linking narrative structures to the realities of Afghan women’s lives. The research underscores the importance of literature in exposing oppression, strengthening feminist critique, and contributing to the discourse on social change.

Abstract

The addition of editorials in translations is often found in Islamic religious books, especially in the discipline of Uṣūl al-Fiqh. One example is the Syarḥ al-Waraqāt by Imām Ḥaramain, translated by Mujiburrahman. This book is written in the ījāz style (few words but rich in meaning), so it requires additional explanations to make its meaning easier for readers to understand. This study aims to describe the forms of addition strategies in the translation of the Syarḥ al-Waraqāt book and explain the process of its occurrence in the context of Arabic-Indonesian translation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with documentation methods and note-taking techniques. The results show that the translation process is in line with Peter Newmark's translation strategy theory. Two forms of addition strategies were found: additions made based on considerations of language structure, and additions made based on semantic considerations to clarify or enrich the meaning of the text. The addition process is carried out in three ways: inserting additions directly into the text, writing them in brackets, or placing them in footnotes. These three methods reflect the application of amplification and description techniques in the translation of Islamic books.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic landscape in tourism spaces in Puncak, a popular tourist destination in West Java, Indonesia. It explores the diversity, distribution, and functions of languages used, as well as the reasons why this phenomenon occurred in this specific area, where people host tourists. Using a qualitative approach, this research examines language use in signs, advertisements, and public notices, revealing the socio-cultural and economic dynamics that shape language choices. Findings highlight the prominence of three languages: Indonesian, Arabic, and English, reflecting local identity, the influence of Middle Eastern tourists, and global tourism trends. The study also investigates how multilingualism, cultural identity, and the commodification of languages interact in tourism. By examining the symbolic and informational roles of language in public spaces, this research contributes to an understanding of sociolinguistic diversity in multicultural tourism settings. It offers insights for the development of inclusive language policies, especially in tourism spaces.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse strategies employed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud in his speech at the 2020 G20 Riyadh Summit using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. It aims to reveal how the ideology of monarchical legitimacy is constructed through textual structures at the macro-, super-, and microstructural levels, and how these constructions shape social cognition and reproduce power relations within the global socio-political context. The significance of this study lies in its effort to understand political speeches delivered at international forums as symbolic instruments of legitimation, particularly those produced by monarchical leaders. The findings indicate that King Salman’s speech strategically constructs a representation of Saudi Arabia as a responsible, solution-oriented, and humanitarian-oriented global actor. This discourse frames G20 countries as legitimate authorities in determining the direction of global governance, while positioning the international community as beneficiaries of these policies. These findings demonstrate that G20 discourse functions as a discursive mechanism to normalize and legitimize Saudi Arabia’s monarchical leadership within a global political landscape marked by uncertainty resulting from health, economic, and global governance crises.
