Abstract

The tsunami that struck Aceh on 26 December 2004 caused catastrophic destruction and an estimated loss of around 300,000 human lives. This natural disaster not only resulted in extensive physical devastation and total loss of property but also triggered significant psychological issues. Early research indicates that coping strategies play a vital role in strengthening resilience among disaster survivors and in preventing the onset of more severe psychological conditions. This study, therefore, examines the coping strategies used by tsunami survivors who lost family members during the disaster. A total of ten survivors who met the criteria of losing family members were selected using snowball sampling. This study employed a qualitative case study design. In-depth interviews were conducted individually until data saturation was reached. The data were then analysed thematically. Findings reveal that three (3) coping strategies were used by the informants: social support (for example, through cultural and community activities), religious coping involving prayer and other practices, and situational change, such as relocating, pursuing aspirations, and engaging in business. Collectively, these approaches enhanced the survivors’ mental and emotional resilience and strengthened their self-confidence, even twenty (20) years after the disaster.

Abstract

This study aims to explore effective intervention paths of school social work in optimizing the social support system for poor College Students in Shanxi Province, China. Adopting a qualitative research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 2 education bureau leaders, 3 university funding center administrators, 5 counselors, 20 poor College Students, and 2 focus groups (10 students each) via purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding with ATLAS.ti software. The results identified three core statuses of the current social support system: government-dominated financial support, insufficient emotional support, and fragmented school-based support. Corresponding problems included a single support subject, unbalanced support content, and inefficient coordination mechanisms. Three effective intervention paths were proposed: constructing a multi-stakeholder collaborative support network, optimizing the structure of support content, and establishing an integrated school social work service mechanism. This study provides empirical evidence and practical references for improving the social support system for poor College Students and promoting the professional development of school social work in China.

Abstract

This literature review systematically examines the gendered dynamics of roles, professional identity, and community participation among female social workers. The analysis reveals that their distinctive empathetic and relational competencies significantly enhance service quality and community cohesion, yet simultaneously incur heavier emotional labor and professional vulnerabilities. Gender roles and stereotypes are found to shape their practice while imposing structural constraints. The study concludes that transforming these gendered strengths into sustainable professional capital necessitates supportive organizational environments and equitable career pathways, offering key implications for optimizing community practice and policy.

Abstract

The transition from higher education to the workforce presents significant challenges for graduating students, particularly in aligning academic preparation with industry expectations. In Malaysia, counsellors in Public Institutions of Higher Education (PIHE) play a crucial role in equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for career readiness. Despite this important function, limited research has explored the lived experiences and effective strategies employed by these counsellors in facilitating students' career development. This study addresses this gap by examining the practices of counsellors within selected Malaysian PIHEs, aiming to shed light on their contributions in enhancing graduate employability. This study employs a phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences of counsellors in Malaysian PIHEs, focusing on the strategies they use to foster career readiness among graduating students. In-depth interviews were conducted with six counsellors from Public Institutions of Higher Education (PIHE) located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Perak, Malaysia. The data collected was analyzed using thematic analysis, which identified five strategies used by the counsellors: organizing programs and workshops, designing career modules, collaborating with industry, conducting group counselling sessions, and providing individual coaching. The findings will furnish empirical evidence to help graduate programs, educators, and novice counselors in assisting graduating students with the transition into the workforce.

Abstract

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right and a critical component of public health, yet in Juba City, South Sudan, the situation is dire, with significant portions of the population facing severe water scarcity due to inadequate infrastructure and conflict-driven disruptions. This study investigates the impact of this water scarcity on households in Juba City using a qualitative research methodology. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews with household heads and key stakeholders from various administrative levels in selected payams: Munuki, Juba, and Kator. Purposive, convenience, and critical case sampling were used. Thematic content analysis was employed to identify recurring themes and patterns in the data, revealing the profound effects of inadequate access to clean and safe water on health, economic stability, and social cohesion. The study found that households suffer from increased prevalence of waterborne diseases, significant financial burdens, and heightened social tensions, including conflicts within communities and gender-based violence. The study underscores the urgent need for improved water infrastructure, equitable distribution, and sustainable management practices to mitigate these challenges and enhance the quality of life in Juba City, contributing to the broader goals of Sustainable Development Goal 6.
