Abstract

This study aims at investigating the students and hard science teachers’ perceptions on the use of English as the language of instruction, the frequency of English used as the medium of instruction by hard science teachers, and the hard science teachers’ professional competences at SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar in science classes at RSBI (Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional). The subjects of this study were the students and hard science teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar. The data on the frequency of English used by the teachers were gathered by recording the instructional process. The students and teachers’ perceptions and the teachers’ professional competencies were gathered using questionnaire and interview. The obtained data were then analyzed descriptively. The findings of the study showed that the students and hard science teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar have positive perceptions toward English. The frequency of the use of English as the medium of instruction varies. It showed that the mathematics teacher had a high frequency of English use. While the frequency of biology and a physics teacher in using English was considerably very low. The data also revealed that the hard science teachers had implemented professional competencies covering pedagogy, personal, social, and professional competencies.

Abstract

This study highlights the implementation of each aspect of self-regulated learning in cyclical phase which was proposed by Zimmerman and Moylan (2009). With an aim to identify whether elementary school students in Buleleng Subdistrict implement self-regulated learning or not, this study used descriptive qualitatively research design to describe comprehensively the implementation of self-regulated learning in elementary school students. SDN 3 Banjar Jawa, SDN 4 Banyuasri, SD Laboratorium Undiksha, and SDN 4 Kampung Baru became the setting of this study because those schools have implemented curriculum 2013 which means that those schools have implicitly implemented self-regulated learning. There were 544 students from grade 1 until 6 which were chosen randomly as the subject of this study. The instruments used in this study were observation checklist, questionnaire which was consisted of 20 statements which had been distributed to subject of the study, and also interview guide which was used to interview several students from the subject of the study. The result of the study shows that most of elementary school students in Buleleng sub-district had implemented self-regulated learning.

Abstract

This study aims to create a learning model that able to improve students literacy skills. Within the research method development, the Progressive Interview Learning Model (PILM) has been refined and empowered continuously so the students are gradually treated in the lectures. This study used a total sample, i.e. students who take the Sociolinguistics course. Students are given experience in a structured group. The sample follows lectures with Progressive Interview Learning Model in the classroom, around the campus, and within the community. In the classroom, the interview activity is conducted to college friends about a free topic. In the campus environment, the interview is conducted to structural officials, lecturers, educational staff, and other staff with the topic of information about the lecture smoothness. While in the community, students conduct interviews with community leaders about leadership on religious, economic, security, cultural, social, educational, and community topics. The results showed that students literacy ability increased significantly.The implication for literacy teacher can be integrated with four language skill in learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not there was any significant effect on the second grade students’ reading comprehension taught by using Big Books as teaching media. The design of this study used post test only control group of quasi experimental research. Therefore the population of this study was second grade students in south Bali. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that students in experimental group performed better than the students in control group. It was proven by the resultthat showed the mean score of the experimental group was 81.59 while the mean score of the control group was 73.64. The result of the t-test also showed the value of t-observed (tobs) was 3.009 and the value of t-critical value (tcv) was 2.018. It shows the value of tobs is higher than the value of tcv. Therefore, it could be concluded that there was significant effect of Big Books as teaching media on the second grade students’ reading comprehension in south Bali.

Abstract

This study was a descriptive qualitative study aimed at analysing types of error and sources of error in the short biography text writings in English language teaching (ELT) context. The subject of this study was 11th Grade of Accounting Department Students of a Vocational High School in Singaraja in the academic year 2015/2016. The instruments in the study were researcher, tabulation table, and interview guide. The textual analysis design was used in this study to gather the data. The students’ errors were analysed according to surface strategy taxonomy by Dulay et al. (1982). This study revealed that misformation was the most frequent errors occurred in the students’ writings, followed by omission, addition, and misordering. Furthermore, the sources of error were identified according to four sources of error by Brown (2007). This study found that interlingual transfer was the main sources of students’ errors, followed by context of learning, interlingual transfer, and communication strategy. Related to these findings, the present study suggested that teachers pay more serious attention to students’ errors by comparing the students’ first language system and the target language system in order to avoid errors.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the phonemic and graphemic changes of English loanwords in Bahasa Indonesia appearing in magazine entitled ‘CHIP’. The subjects of this research were the writers/editors of each articles of CHIP magazine. The objects of this research were English loanwords in Indonesian appearing in CHIP magazine ranging from 2013 to 2015 edition plus with the special edition of CHIP. The data were collected by reading and giving a mark to each borrowing words found or spotted in technology magazine (CHIP) through the process of reading. This study was a descriptive qualitative research which applying interactive data anaylisis model in analyzing the collected data. The results of this study show there are 12 processes of phonemic changes specifically for consonants. There are 8 processes of phoneme shift, 2 processes of phoneme split, and 2 processes of apocope. There are 10 phonemic changes of vowel: 1 process of phoneme split, 2 processes of phoneme shift, 2 processes of phoneme merger and 5 processes of paragoge. There are two types of graphemic changes found, namely pure phonological adaptation and syllabic adaptation. In the syllabic adaptation process, there are four processes of graphemic change, namely (1) double consonants become single consonant, (2) double vowels become single vowel, (3) monosyllable become disyllable, and (4) consonant inhibitory at the end of consonant clusters is disappear.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of thematic patterning technique and achievement motivation on students’ writing achievement. The subjects were the second semester students of English Education Department in the academic year 2015/2016 recruited by using cluster random sampling. The population was 7 classes, 2 classes were taken as the sample of the study. The total number of sample was 52 students who were divided into four cells of treatments. The II B class was assigned as the experimental group and II D class as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using thematic patterning technique and the control group by using conventional technique. The research design was post test only control group design by using 2x2 factorial design. There were three variables in this study, namely: independent, moderator, and dependent variables. The independent variable was thematic patterning technique and moderator variable was the students’ achievement motivation level (high and low). In another side, students’ achievement in writing paragraph was categorized as dependent variable. The instrument that was used to test the students’ achievement motivation was achievement motivation questionnaire, while the instrument used to test students’ writing achievement was writing achievement test. The analysis of data used two way Anova and then continued by post hoc testing using Tukey test. The findings of the study were: there was a significant difference in writing achievement between the students who are taught by using thematic patterning technique and those who are taught by using conventional technique. The mean score of students taught by using thematic patterning technique was higher than the mean score of students’ writing achievement for students taught by using conventional technique, there was interaction between of thematic patterning technique and the achievement motivation in learning English on students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant effect of the implementation of Big Book as media on reading comprehension achievement of the fifth grade students. This study was conducted in SD Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja in the form of an experimental research with post-Test only Control Group Design. The population was the fifth grade in which two classes were selected as the sample of the study. Then, the samples were decided as the experimental group and control group by using lottery. The experimental group was taught by using Big Book as media and the control group was taught by using conventional media. The data were analyzed by using t-test through SPSS 17.0. The result of the data analysis showed that students in experimental group performed better than the students in the control group. It was proven by the result of the descriptive statistics that showed the mean score of the experimental group was 85.51 while the mean score of the control group was 75.56. The result of the t-test also showed that the value of Sig (2-tailed) 0.000 was less than 0.05. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference of reading comprehension achievement between students treated with big book as media and those treated using conventional media at fifth grade of elementary school in SD Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja.

Abstract

This study was a Research and Development study (R&D) used Sugiyono’s model which aimed at (1) analyzing the design of the existing English lesson plans in SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja, (2) identifying the problems faced by the English teacher in designing good English lesson plans (3) determining the good design of Character Based English Lesson Plans in SMK Triatma Jaya Singaraja (4) determining the quality of the Character Based Lesson Plans developed. The data of the present study were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. This result showed that the existing lesson plans did not clearly state the values of nation character and the assessment and it was not explicitly stated on the learning activity. The learning activity seemed monotone. There seemed to be materials repetition. The materials must be suitable with the students’ department. The lesson plans developed were designed based on technical guideline of lesson plan development proposed by Board Directors of Senior High School Development (2010) with character assessment as an addition. The lesson plans were developed in form of integrated lesson plan. The lesson plans developed were effective and the quality is excellent.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to analyze the types of grammatical errors and to know the types of grammatical error which are frequently made by the junior high school students in speaking English. The research design in this study was descriptive qualitative design with the eighth grade students in second semester of SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja as the population and 33 students were chosen to be the sample. The instruments that were used to collect the data were researcher and video recorder. The result showed that students made error in omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering. The total of errors reaches 61 times. The highest frequency of error is omission which is 62.30%. The second frequency of error is misordering, 18,4%. The third frequency of error is addition which is 14,75%. The last frequency of error is misformation that is 4,91%. Grammatical error, Speaking
