Abstract

Abstract   This research was conducted in an attempt to analyze and describe the implementation of English School Based Curriculum (ESBC) in SMAN 5 Denpasar in the academic year 2012/2013.The setting of the research was in three classes and there were three teachers as the subjects of the study. The primary reasons for taking this school as the research setting was mainly because this school provides learners with National as well as International Standard. The teaching and learning processes were conducted entirely in English and the ESBC has been implemented since 2006.The sources of the data were Syllabus, lesson plans and the teaching and learning activities in naturalistic environment of the classroom. This research was conducted to figure out the teachers’ understanding of ESBC, the planning of ESBC, the implementation of ESBC and the teachers’ problems in implementing ESBC. This study revealed that the teachers under study needs to improve their understanding of ESBC, their ability in designing English syllabus and lesson plan as well as their ability in implementing ESBC in more contextualized learning activities.   Key Words: English School Based Curriculum, National Standard of Education, International Standard of Education

Abstract

This study focused on: 1) investigating the significant difference in speaking competency between the students taught by using Jigsaw II and those taught by using STAD; 2) investigating the interactional effect between teaching techniques and self-confidence upon students’ speaking competency; 3) investigating the significant difference in speaking competency between the students with high self-confidence taught by Jigsaw II and those taught by STAD; and 4) investigating the significant difference in speaking competency between the students with low self-confidence taught by Jigsaw II and those taught by STAD. The findings show that, firstly, the students treated by Jigsaw II achieve better speaking competency than those treated by STAD; secondly, there is an interactional effect between teaching techniques and self-confidence on the students’ speaking competency; thirdly, the students with high-self-confidence gain higher speaking competency when being treated by Jigsaw II than by STAD; and fourthly, the students with low self-confidence attain the same speaking competency achievement when being treated by Jigsaw II and STAD.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant effect of the implementation of Big Book as media on reading comprehension achievement of the fifth grade students. This study was conducted in SD Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja in the form of an experimental research with post-Test only Control Group Design. The population was the fifth grade in which two classes were selected as the sample of the study. Then, the samples were decided as the experimental group and control group by using lottery. The experimental group was taught by using Big Book as media and the control group was taught by using conventional media. The data were analyzed by using t-test through SPSS 17.0. The result of the data analysis showed that students in experimental group performed better than the students in the control group. It was proven by the result of the descriptive statistics that showed the mean score of the experimental group was 85.51 while the mean score of the control group was 75.56. The result of the t-test also showed that the value of Sig (2-tailed) 0.000 was less than 0.05. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference of reading comprehension achievement between students treated with big book as media and those treated using conventional media at fifth grade of elementary school in SD Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study was aimed at exploring refusal strategies used by the students of primary level of Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School (GMIS) Bali in requesting, offering, inviting, and suggesting. The students being involved as the subject of this study were multi nationality (Indonesian, Indian, Russian, and Japanese) male and female students of the third, fourth and fifth grade which were determined using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through observation, recording, and note taking employing video recorder, camera, and field note as the instruments of the data collection. Data analysis in this study was done through four concurrent activities covering data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result shows that, in context of request across nationalities, view from the frequency (percentage of refusals) it shows direct refusal is highly used by Russian while it is lowest used by Indonesian students. On the contrary indirect strategy is more often used by Indonesian students. while in context of refusing an offer. it reflects that Indonesian is mostly to refuse it in direct way but this is contrast with Russian who perform direct refusal in less frequent. This condition is in context of refusing in indirect way. the data reveals that Russian are more often to refuse the offering in indirect way while Indonesian is the lowest. In context of refusing invitation, nationality which is the highest used of direct refusal is Indian while nationality which was prefer to perform indirect refusal is Russian. In addition, in context of Suggestion, direct refusal is highly performed by Russian whereas indirect refusal is more often used by Japanese students.

Abstract

The study was categorized as classroom action research which was done for the purpose of improving the students’ reading comprehension at Class X.A3 in SMKN 2 Singaraja in academic year 2013/2014 through the implementation of R.A.P Paraphrasing strategy. The study was done in two cycles where each cycle consisted of four main activities; planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect the data, there were three kinds of instrument used namely researcher’s diary, questionnaire, and tests. Furthermore, the data obtained in this study were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The data gained in pre-test and post-tests were analyzed quantitatively, while the data from researcher’s diary and questionnaire were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the students’ reading comprehension at Class X.A3 in SMKN 2 Singaraja had improved significantly. It was indicated by the result of students’ tests on which in pre-test, from 35 students in total, there were only 14.29% students passing the school passing grade. But in post-test I, the number increased into 71.43% students, and finally in post-test II, the criteria of success had been reached as 85.71% students could successfully pass the standard passing score. In addition, the success of the study was also based on the results of the questionnaire as well as the researcher’s diary which showed the students’ positive attitudes toward the implementation of the R.A.P. Abstract

Terdapat 3 tujuan dari penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan persepsi guru tentang pembelajaran mandiri, aktivitas yang diberikan guru selama pembelajaran online, dan mengetahui komponen dan indikator mandiri yang diidentifikasi dalam aktivitas tersebut. Penelitian ini dikategorikan ke dalam metode campuran dengan menggunakan data kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Satu-satunya subjek dari data ini adalah seorang guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar siswa kelas X di SMA N 1 Blahbatuh. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuisioner, observasi, dan tabel klasifikasi. Ada tiga hasil utama dari penelitian ini. Pertama, guru memiliki persepsi positif tentang pembelajaran mandiri yang terlihat dari hasil angket. Kedua, kegiatan yang diberikan guru belum maksimal, karena beberapa tahapan pembelajaran belum memuat kegiatan. Terakhir, hanya ada empat komponen pembelajaran mandiri yang diidentifikasi dalam kegiatan yang diberikan oleh guru selama pembelajaran online. Ada kecenderungan guru salah menafsirkan pembelajaran mandiri.Kata kunci: Pembelajaran Mandiri; Persepsi; Pembelajaran Online.

Abstract

This study aimed to: 1) describe how the students learn to reflect their teaching simulation in microteaching class.2) describe what the students think about the benefit of learning to reflect teaching simulations in microteaching class. This study was conducted in ELE Undiksha Singaraja,especially sixth grade students because by doing self-reflection, students who will be an English teacher can improve their teaching. It is very important the sixth semester of ELE students in Undiksha Singaraja to be aware of strengths and weaknesses of own teaching for knowing the parts of teaching that need to be maintained and improved. This study was descriptive qualitative. This study used self-reflective journal as  an instrument which was descriptively analyzed. The result showed 1) The students reflect their teaching based on exploring their weaknesses after doing teaching simulation in the classroom such as lack in classroom management and technical problem during teaching 2) Students got the benefit of learning based on the input from the audience, after watching the recorded simulation and based on their self-observation start from how they prepare until the end of the simulation.Keywords: Self-Reflection, Reflective Teaching, Self-Reflective Journal

Abstract

Pembelajaran jarak jauh atau online learning mudah dilakukan mengingat kemajuan teknologi di era sekarang ini dengan berbagai aplikasi yang memungkinkan pembelajaran tatap muka atau nontatap muka. Namun, yang menjadi kendala adalah kreativitas guru dalam memanfaatkan teknologi yang ada. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penilaian guru terhadap kreativitasnya dan bagaimana mereka mengimplementasikan kreativitas tersebut pada konteks pembelajaran dalam jaringan.  Penelitian saat ini adalah penelitian embedded mix-method yang menggunakan kuesioner self-rated, lembar observasi pembelajaran jarak jauh, dan wawancara mendalam sebagai instrumen. Subjek penelitian yaitu guru mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu kuesioner. Dalam penelitian ini, data kualitatif lebih dominan dibandingkan data kuantitatif QUAL (Quan). Teknik yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data yaitu analisis deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian yaitu pertama, guru menilai dirinya kreatif dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran jarak jauh atau pembelajaran daring. Kedua, kreativitas guru diobservasi dan dinilai kurang. Ketiga, terdapat kesenjangan antara penilaian diri dan hasil observasi terhadap kreativitas guru, yaitu pada satu sisi guru menilai diri mereka kreatif, namun pada sisi lain, kreativitas mereka masih dinilai kurang berdasarkan observasi.
