Abstract

The principal aim of this paper is to empirically investigate the bike-sharing usage among Klang Valley citizen. Data for this study were collected using an online questionnaire survey. However, due to the low responses, simulations have been used and applied to predict the outcomes of the research. The simulated data was generated based on a uniform selection of a random element that simulated the answers of the potential questionnaire respondents. We limited the number of responses to 350 respondents. Correlation analysis was applied to analyze the data collected. The factors affecting the bike-sharing usage are availability, safety, convenience cost and enjoyment. Convenience is found as the only variable that influences the bike-sharing usage among Klang Valley citizen. The findings contribute towards an understanding of factors that may encourage people to shift from an automobile to bike-sharing as an alternative towards a sustainable transportation option. In theoretical contribution, the developed theoretical framework presents a platform for future empirical bike-sharing studies and extend previous research conducted in Western countries. This research shows that bike-sharing is important in embracing non-motorized means of transport towards reducing the environmental pollution and acknowledgement towards the reduction in road congestion, accidents, and other social and environmental problems. Findings from this study will help practitioners implement strategies with greater potential in increasing the attractiveness of bike-sharing and improve the sustainability of land use and transportation systems.

Abstract

Shuttle buses replacing private transports have long been used to reduce traffic congestion in a university campus. However, to estimate the optimal number of buses taking into account human behaviour using a manual method to provide a better service is very difficult. This is especially true when the shuttle buses have multiple routes and are significantly affected by unpredictable human behaviour such as their stochastic arrival at the available bus stops. This paper thus employs modelling and simulation methodologies specifically a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) technique to observe the effects of various configuration of bus number to student waiting time. For this, a DES model for bus transportation in a university using various available modules in Arena software was first developed. The simulation model was then fed with relevant data; e.g., the total number of students having classes at certain time periods, the current allocation of the buses for each bus stop, etc. The model was later used as a test bed for various configurations and analysis of the number of buses and their effects on students waiting time including their optimal number. The simulation results show that the current number of used buses can be reduced to its optimal number while maintaining student waiting time. This simulation model employs a new approach of using a transport module to transport a huge amount of entities to multiple stations as opposed to its traditional usage to only transport a single entity to a particular station.

Abstract

Generally speaking, in search of alternative ways that is meant to prevent environment pollution and its sub hazard consequences, developers and planners as well as the masses nowadays are encouraged to use what is call a green home when building their houses. These types of houses typically use resources that are environmentally responsive. However, this new approach to house developments lacks clearly defined and globally accepted standards on what constitutes a green model. Thus, this research aims to educate the public about sustainable transformations from traditional homes to green homes by modelling the 3D model virtually to illustrate the differences between the conventional homes and green homes and its impact on the environment, and demonstrate the types of green alternatives available in Malaysia in order to construct the green homes. The ultimate goal is to create digitally a 3D model of the green homes through Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM allows the public to run computer simulations that help to understand and visualise the evolutions of the traditional homes to green homes. The digital 3D model is effective in influencing and educating the residents about the benefits of green housing practices and ways to incorporate green building technologies.

Abstract

Halal certification and acceptance of Halal products had been widespread in the hospitality, food, packaging, banking and finance industries. In the food sector, Halal consciousness is especially high among consumers as well as the governments. However, the demand for Halal cosmetics and beauty products is not as strong. With increasing consumer awareness and a willingness to pay for quality products, the scenario is changing, thereby transforming the cosmetics and personal care industry into a potential sunrise segment for the region. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory investigation on the awareness of halal certification process among cosmetics manufacturers. A sample random t-test and descriptive analysis was used upon among cosmetics entrepreneurs in Malaysia. The data was selected based on simple random sampling from MIHAS Book directory which has listed the companies involved in the 13th edition Malaysia International Halal Showcase in Kuala Lumpur. Findings from this study indicated that Malaysia cosmetic manufacturers are well aware of the halal certification process and competent in obtaining halal certification. Future research should look into studying manufacturers which have yet to obtain halal certification in order to full comprehend this issue in depth

Abstract

The aim of becoming a global Halal hub has been outlined in the Third Industrial Master Plan 2006–2020 (IMP3) and Malaysia now is on target to attain the status by 2020. However, the progression needs to be geared with a holistic ecosystem that enable closing compliance loop within Halal supply chain. Thus, calling for sustainable development to strengthen the Halal definition. Despite the urge, the degree of readiness to employ green practices in Halal food industry is still vague and the issues are still new and developing. Food industry is one of the major contributors to environmental problems, large amount of waste is generated from food industry, by promoting sustainability in producing Halal food can reduce their environmental footprint and will benefit Malaysia where other countries can recognize Malaysian Halal standards not only for hygiene and safety but also as a symbol of eco-friendly practices. Therefore, green Halal supply chain is now seen to be central towards global Halal hub. Responding to these needs, this study is expected; (1) to identify what are the green practices implemented in collaboration with supplier and customer in managing Halal food supply chain (2) to assess what is sustainable performance achieved from green practices implemented (3) to determine if supplier-customer collaboration moderates the impact of green practices on sustainable performance. This study will employ mixed methods of qualitative and quantitative to answer the study’s objectives. Overall, this study is expected to present a model that provides a comprehensive view on Green Halal supply chain concerning supplier-customer collaboration in green practices. The model can help the industry and policy maker to identify what green practices are feasible to collaborate with and what are the related benefits and barriers. Engaging Green Halal Supply Chain can further improve Malaysian reputation as the world’s leading Halal hub.
