<![CDATA[This research aims to compare whether there was an effect on students’ writing quality when students were taught with blended learning method, combined with Edmodo or Quipper School. This was a quasi-experimental research with 72 students at grade XI MIPA SMAN I Bengkulu Tengah, Indonesia as the samples. The experiment group was taught with Edmodo while the control group was taught with Quipper School. The instrument was a writing test. The findings of this research, with respect to the comparison of post test mean scores between the experimental group and the control group, were as follows. There was a significant difference on students’ general writing ability. There were significant differences on students’ writing ability in the aspects of content and language use. However, there was no significant difference.The students’ responses were positive toward the use of Edmodo as a blended learning. Further studies are recommended for other school levels. It seems that Edmodo is more effective than Quipper School in writing lesson since the learning platform in Edmodo gives facilities for the students to work independently, enables them to improve their quality and has more practical, interactive, and interesting features.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims at investigating the types of figurative lexicons and the types of meaning of figurative lexicons found in “feature” of The Jakarta Post’s December editions. The methodology of the research used descriptive qualitative content analysis. The findings related to research questions showed that there were thirteen types of figurative lexicons found in “feature” of The Jakarta Post and the most dominant type of figurative lexicon found was simile while for the types of meanings of figurative lexicons found in “feature” of The Jakarta Post, it was found that there were seven types of meanings found in “feature” of the Jakarta Post and the most type of meaning of figurative lexicons found was conceptual meaning. This means that using simile and conceptual meaning in the news presentation of “feature” in The Jakarta Post were effective in order to help the readers easier in understanding the news presented in The Jakarta Post. Therefore, it is then recommended that teachers can bring this type of authentic material to school so the students are motivated and encourged to learn more things in English especially about figurative language and types of meanings]]>

<![CDATA[Language Features are the important aspect in a text. This is part of the student’s knowledge. If the students familiar with the language features, they can understand the major characters in the texts easily. The purpose of this study is to analyze the language features that used to describe major characters in short stories. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The research objects were taken at six Indonesian short stories and six English short stories. The research procedure classifies all objects based on language features of research instruments.The results of this study are there are two characters of major character in the short stories, protagonist and antagonist. In Indonesian short stories there are two short stories that have antagonist characters and four short stories have protagonist characters. And all of the short stories only have one major character. But in English short stories, four of the short stories have two major characters and two short stories only have one major character.Keywords: Language Features, Short Stories, Characters, Major Characters]]>

<![CDATA[Nowadays, the developing and appreciating material based on student’s local culture is very attractive. The objectives of this research are to know the existing folktales in students’ book, to identify local folktales that suitable to be included in the English students’ book and to know how to include the local folktales in the English students’ book for ninth grade of Junior High School in Rejang Lebong. This research adapted the R&D model proposed by Borg and Gall (1983) with some modifications. The data was taken from students and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Rejang Lebong, SMP Negeri 2 Rejang Lebong and SMP Negeri 5 Rejang Lebong through questionnaire and interview. The first result of this research shows that students like the existing folktales in students’ book but sometimes they found difficulties in comprehending it. The second result identifies three siutable local folktales suitable to be included in the students’ book; Legenda Batu Menangis (62.4%), Lalan Belek (66.7%) and Muning Raib (66.7%). The third result shows that the developed material can be used as supplementary reading material. In conclusion, the existing folktales in the student’s book are good but not contextual, there are highly three suitable local folktales to be included in students’ book (Legenda Batu Menangis, Lalan Belek, and Muning Raib) and the way to include the suitable local folktales in English students’ book is as supplementary reading material. As suggestion, the next researcher can conduct further study on evaluation by using try out of this material development.]]>

<![CDATA[The objectives of this study were: (1) To find out whether textbook used by second grade students at SD IT UMMI Kota Bengkulu fulfill the criteria of a good textbook. (2) To find out whether the English textbook used by second grade students at SD IT UMMI Kota Bengkulu relevant to KTSP curriculum. This research used descriptive qualitative content analysis as its research method. The data were collected from the English student book “Let’s Make Friends with English” for second grade students. The results showed that English textbook entitled “Let’s make friends with English” used by second grade students at SD IT UMMI Kota Bengkulu have fulfilled the criteria of a good textbook by achieving the Fair fulfillment. The textbook was categorized relevance to the KTSP curriculum, but the activities in the listening can be said irrelevant because they cannot cover the learning objectives in listening. It was then recommended that the teachers need to modify the tasks and activities on the textbook which did not fulfill the criteria of good textbook, especially in the area of accompanying materials (CD, Cassettes and pictures), language skill, and teach ability aspects.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aimed to find out whether there was any effect of implementation scientific based approach using tutorial video on students’ reading comprehension as a whole and various aspects in procedure text at grade VIII of SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu. The design was a quasi-experimental research. The sample consisted of 50 students at grade VIII SMPN 4 Kota Bengkulu, 25 students for experiment group and 25 students for control group. The instrument was a reading test which comprised 50 multiple choice questions, the instrument was tried out with r=0,970. The research findings were as follows; (1) Scientific approach based on tutorial video affected students’ whole reading comprehension; (2) scientific approach based on tutorial video affected students’ reading comprehension in various aspects of reading comprehension, namely; finding general information, finding specific information, integrating information, and learning from text. <![CDATA[The aim of this research was to investigate teacher’s questions based on the levels and functions of questions in English classrooms at Senior High Schools. The study was a descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were six EnglishSenior High School teachers In Rejang Lebong Regency. For collecting the datatape recording, observation checklist and interview were employed. Result related toresearch questions showed that the teacher’s questions were categorized remembering, comprehending and applying and analyzing level. None of the teachers used questions in, evaluating and creating level of the Bloom’s Taxonomy.In the research only five function of questions were found namely: practicing skills,checking prior knowledge, recapping, and checking understanding. From thefinding it can be concluded that The questions asked by the teachers in classroomsare in lower order cognitive level and not all function of questions (from elevenfunction of questions) were applied by the teachers.]]>

<![CDATA[This research objective are analyze the common pattern in Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials. The research method used was a mixed method. The research instrument is checklist. The procedure classifies all objects (10 texts Jakarta Post newspaper editorials and 10 texts ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials) on the thematic progression patterns are checklist. The result showsthat the thematic progression in Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials are found 3 patterns of thematic progression; 10 texts derived theme; 8 texts Constant progression, and 2 text linear progression. The different on thematic progression in Jakarta post and “Kompas’ newspaper editorials is difference,the difference of sequence in the patterns between Jakarta Post and ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials. The Conclussion Thematic Progression in Jakarta Postand ‘Kompas’ newspaper editorials are derived theme and Constant progression.]]>

<![CDATA[This study investigates the interaction pattern in SMAN 1 Curup Kota, based on Coulthard theory (2002). This study analyzed the interaction pattern and type of act used by teacher and students to see the ideal pattern in the classroom. The data analysis shows that (a) the dominant pattern used in the classroom is complete pattern (IRF) and there are also semi-complete pattern (IR) and incomplete pattern (IF); (b) In the type of acts section, the elicitation is the highest followed by informative and starter in the initiation move, reply as the highest act in the response move, and in the follow up accept as the highest followed by comment. It can be concluded that interaction pattern in the classroom is dominantly occured is ideal pattern but it’s not good interaction pattern because delimit student opportunity in the classroom.]]>

<![CDATA[The abstract has become the first part that will be read by readers in a research article. Some important aspects in the abstract are move structure and linguistic features. This study examines the rhetorical moves and linguistic features of English research article abstract written by three groups of authors in Applied Linguistics. The research design was mixed method design combining quantitative and qualitative method with the corpus of this study consisted of 60 abstracts by postgraduate students, national and international authors found in RA abstracts. The results show that the common moves by three groups of authors have only three moves (i.e purpose, method, and results). The common linguistic features used by three groups of authors are active voice, present tense, and simple sentence. By comparing the three groups of abstracts the differences are found in the postgraduate students authors. They were used move 1 (Background/ introduction/ situation) fewer than national and international authors. Furthur the postgraduate students used past tense more dominant than present tense and using hedges is more frequently than national and international authors. This study concludes that in writing RA abstracts a writer should adjust the commonly used rules the abstract especially in using 5 moves in the abstracts.]]>
