Abstract

Abstract     This article is proposed to find out the development of interlanguage, especially the variability of the system the students use in speaking caused by linguistic markedness. Data were collected from participants when they performed their speech. The speech was recorded so that the writer can replay it after the research.     The participants were chosen from those who were conssidered better students for the sake of practicality in collecting the data. The writer analyzed 3 speeches spoken by three participants. To study interlanguage development of the poor students is quite difficult, because they produce the language without the knowlege of English. Therefore, there is no fixed system found when they produce English.Having collected the data and analyzed them, the writer found that interlanguage development is influenced by markedness. Markedness can be divided into marked and unmarked and it is one of the sources of difficulty. The students construct their own system of English based on the markedness they can identify. If they cannot see or listen to the markedness, they tend to make overgeneralization.

Abstract

Code-switching is becoming a common phenomenon which occur extensively in English teachers’ speech in the classrooms where English is not the first language of both teachers and students. In the Indonesian context, particularly where a regional language is used along with the national language (Bahasa Indonesia) both teachers and students are able to speak more than one language. However, many second and foreign-language educators and researchers have developed strong beliefs about using code-switching in teaching English is not an effective way to help students mastering English language. One of the views claims that code switching is a sign of an inability to express oneself, and it reduces the opportunity of using English completely. For this reason, English teachers use of code-switching is regarded as a factor leading to the decline of English language proficiency, despite of the fact that these beliefs may not always grounded in theory or research. This project has aim to describe the application of code-switching practices among the English teachers at English education program in West Sumatra Indonesia where people commonly used Bahasa Indonesia and their regional language i.e. Minangkabau language in communication.The findings of the study show that both intrasentential and intersentential switching are applied by those English teachers

Abstract

Dona Alicia. Meningkatkan kosa kata siswa dengan menggunakan semantic feature Analysis Strategy  pada siswa TK Pertiwi 3 Siteba, Padang. Konsentrasi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa, STKIP PGRI Sumbar.Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi peran sangat penting saat ini. Kenyataan ini tidak bisa di pungkiri jika kita melihat kenyataan bahwa bahasa inggris di anjur kan dari sekolah dasar sampai Perguruan Tinggi.Sebagaimana telah kita ketahui bahwa setiap bahasa terdiri dari komponen keahlian di antaranya : mendengar, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis. Dengan kosa kata yang mencukupi, siswa akan dapat menguasai ke empat ke ahlian tersebut. Siswa diharapkan dapat menggunakan kosa kata tersebut dalam komunikasi sehari – hari, walaupun dengan bahasa yang sangat sederhana.Jurnal ini bertujuan untuk mencoba memberikan salah satu cara alternative dalam pengajaran kosa kata secara cepat dan tepat pada siswa TK Pertiwi yaitu Semantic Feature Analysis Strategy. Ini adalah sebuah Strategy yang praktis dan tepat untuk memperkenalkan kosa kata baru sebagai komponen dasar dalam penguasaan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris dapat berjalan lebih effektif dan siswa dapat lebih termotivasi untuk belajar kosa kata baru. Semua penjelasan tentang teknik ini dan unggulan pengajaran semantic feature analysis akan dituangkan dalam tulisan ini. Penelitiannya adalah penelitian Tindakan Kelas, setelah di ujikan kepada siswa taman kanak – kanak jadi hasilnya menunjukan pronunciation 55%, Spelling 80%, pada Grammar 75%, meaning 89%. Ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa taman kanak- kanak Pertiwi 3 telah mengalami perubahan yang baik dalam mempelajari kosa kata dengan menggunakan Semantic feature analisis.

Abstract

This research was quasi experimental research with factorial 2x2 design. Population of the research was grade X students with the total population was 224. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling, class MIA 2 as experimental group and class MIA 3 as the control group. To collect the data, the researcher used reading comprehension test while questionnaire was used to collect the data about students’ reading motivation. Then, the collected data were analyzed by Chi-Square for normality data testing, variance test for homogeneity data testing, t-test formula and ANOVA for hypothesis testing.            The analysis of the research reveals that: (1) students who are taught by SCORE strategy get better reading comprehension on narrative text  than the students who are taught by Guided Reading strategy, (2) the students with high reading motivation who are taught by SCORE strategy do not get better reading comprehension on narrative text than who are taught by using Guided Reading strategy, (3) the students with low reading motivation who are taught by SCORE strategy get better reading comprehension on narrative text than who are taught by using Guided Reading strategy, (4) there is no interaction between both strategies and students’ reading motivation toward their reading comprehension on narrative text. In conclusion, SCORE strategy is an effective way on students’ reading comprehension compared with Guided Reading. It is suggested for the students that have high and low reading motivation to improve their skill in language learning through SCORE strategy.

Abstract

AbstrakStudents’ ability in expressing ideas is still far from expectation. It is found that several students have lack of vocabulary and grammar understanding.  The purpose of the research is to analyze how well the participant implements task - based learning. This research was case study. The researcher collected the data through observation and used observation checklist and field note. Findings of the research is the participant applies various tasks in teaching speaking and integrates all of skills. Keywords: Task Based-Learning, Teaching Speaking

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari oleh rendahnya keterampilan mahasiswa dalam menuliskan gagasan dan ide dalam menulis paragraf sebagai unsur terkecil dalam menulis. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan tujuan mengetahui efek dari penggunaan strategi Presentation, Practice, and Production terhadap kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis paragraf comparison and contrast. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP)-PGRI Sumatera Barat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan strategi Presentation, Practice, and Production memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis paragraf comparison and contrast.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menulis descriptive text, masalah-masalah lexicogrammar yang dihadapi siswa dalam menulis descriptive text dan penyebab masalah tersebut. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA SMA N 1 Batipuh. Instrumen yang digunakan sebagai alat pengumpul data adalah tes menulis dan wawancara. Data kuantitatif diperoleh dari tes menulis yang dilaksanakan di kelas. Data kualitatif diperoleh dari wawancara yang dilakukan terhadap siswa dan guru bahasa Inggris. Data kuantitatif dan kualitatif tersebut dikelompokkan berdasarkan indikatornya masing-masing. Hasil dari analisis data kuantitatif dan kualitatif diinterpretasikan dan menjadi temuan penelitian. Dari hasil penelitian, ditemukan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis descriptive text adalah cukup dengan nilai rata-rata 1.53. Meskipun nilai rata-rata siswa dikategorikan cukup, siswa juga menghadapi masalah dalam menulis descriptive text. Masalah-masalah mereka berhubungan dengan penggunaan adjective, linking verb, attributive have and has, simple present tense, pronoun, adverb, preposition, dan noun. Penyebab masalah tersebut adalah interfensi bahasa pertama, kurangnya pengetahuan siswa tentang grammar, kosakata, dan rendahnya frekuensi tugas menulis.
