Abstract

Previous application of the repertory grid technique in exploring participants’ personal constructs has been noteworthy. However, this technique could be modified to suit the purposes of the research questions, the conditions of the participants and the context of the study. This paper presents personal constructs theory which underpins the repertory grid technique and it also proposes the ways to developa modified repertory grid instrument for eliciting teachers’ personal constructs. According to Kelly (1955), a seminal psychologist, individual forms their constructs based on their observations and experiences and these personal constructs are used to interpret events. To elicit participants’ personal constructs regarding the topic under study, the repertory grid instrument, which is developed based on Kelly’s Personal Construct Theory, could bemodified through interview trials. After conducting the interview trials, the resultsshould be analyzed to identify whether this instrument is effective not only for participants but also for the researchers. The modified repertory grid instrument should allow and support participants in formalizing and elaborating their personal constructs. For the researchers, the instrument should be helpful to identify the participants’ personal constructs based on their own conceptions and understandings toward the topic under study.

Abstract

English has become a language spread all over the world. The sociolinguistic facts show that various variations of English arise due to local language and cultural contact. In the context of English language learning in a country that uses English as a foreign language, it is still believed that English teachers in schools teach standard English namely British Received Pronunciation and Standard American English. However, this condition needs to be questioned whether the English teachers actually use standard English or whether they use a certain English variation. The purpose of this study is to describe the English language used by teachers in syntax. Several English teachers who taught in high school in Padang became participants in this study. The results of this study show that the English teachers have a syntactic difference with the English standard English and British English. The results of this study can provide information on teaching English in Indonesia.

Abstract

Code-switching is becoming a common phenomenon which occur extensively in English teachers’ speech in the classrooms where English is not the first language of both teachers and students. In the Indonesian context, particularly where a regional language is used along with the national language (Bahasa Indonesia) both teachers and students are able to speak more than one language. However, many second and foreign-language educators and researchers have developed strong beliefs about using code-switching in teaching English is not an effective way to help students mastering English language. One of the views claims that code switching is a sign of an inability to express oneself, and it reduces the opportunity of using English completely. For this reason, English teachers use of code-switching is regarded as a factor leading to the decline of English language proficiency, despite of the fact that these beliefs may not always grounded in theory or research. This project has aim to describe the application of code-switching practices among the English teachers at English education program in West Sumatra Indonesia where people commonly used Bahasa Indonesia and their regional language i.e. Minangkabau language in communication. The findings of the study show that both intrasentential and intersentential switching are applied by those English teachers

Abstract

Drawing from World Englishes (WE) perspective, English language learners need to agree with the varieties of English. This study investigates the attitudes of pre-service English teachers or students majoring in English Education study programs in Indonesia and its relation to their identity construction in English Language Teaching (ELT). Survey research was conducted, and the data were quantitatively collected with an online questionnaire completed by 198 respondents. The findings showed the positive attitudes of pre-service English teachers toward Indonesian English and their interest in incorporating Indonesian norms and culture into ELT. However, most pre-service English teachers wanted to sound like Native Speakers of English (NSE) even though having positive attitudes toward Indonesian English, and they wanted to be taught by teachers from both Indonesia and native speakers. The findings suggest the importance of raising the agreement of WE by reforming ELT pedagogically in contexts where local varieties of English are emerging

Abstract

Communication problems may occur in EIL contexts when English language users from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds conveying their messages. Being intelligible should not be seen as simple as pronunciation problems but it has other essential issues beyond it. To overcome such problem, there is a need for the English language learners to be aware of the intelligibility issues. This paper discusses the importance of introducing the intelligibility issues in EIL contexts for English language learners at secondary education in order to prepare them to communicate effectively with the diverse English language users around the world. The analytical scheme developed by Hu and McKay (2014) which defines the dimension of integrating multilingual and multicultural practices is adopted to select the YouTube video clips for the teaching materials. This practical guidance for introducing the intelligibility issues to the secondary school students could be employed by the English teachers to raise their students’ awareness toward the construct of intelligibility in EIL contexts.

Abstract

Peer feedback on oral presentation is still an unexplored area. Much research has been conducted on peer feedback in various teaching and learning contexts, only a few about how peer gives feedback on his/her partner’ oral presentations. The study described here focuses using peer feedback on oral presentations. Analyzing data from semi-structured interviews, this case study investigated impact of giving peer feedback on oral presentations used by English as Foreign Language (EFL) college students on other student’s oral presentation tasks. Data analysis revealed that the peer gave oral feedback mainly focused on content-related criteria (quality of introduction, structure, and conclusion). Most of the peers focused on the nature of the delivery (eye-contact, vocal delivery, enthusiasm, interaction with the audience and body-language), and a few focused on a general quality and on the design of the students’ PowerPoint (PPT) slides.
