Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find the effect of the application of Practice Rehearsal Pairs strategy Towards Students’ Speaking Ability At The Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 2 Lubuk Alung. This research is an experimental research. The population was all students in class X SMAN 2 Lubuk Alung school year 2015/2016. The samples selected were X1class as the experimental class and X3 class as the control class. The research was conducted for 8 meetings. The research began by providing treatment to the experimental class by using Practice Rehearsal Pair strategy and control class by using conventional technique. At the end of the research, students were given a speaking test as an instrument to determine the result of the strategy used. The technique of analyzing data was the hypothesis t-test, which was used to test the difference in mean and standard deviation of the two samples. Based on the analysis of data obtained, tcalculate = 5.12 and ttable = 2.05. Because tcalculate (5.12) > ttable (2.05), then H0 was rejected and Hi was accepted, so it can be concluded that the application of Practice Rehearsal Pair strategy provides a significant effect towards students’ speaking ability at SMAN 2 Lubuk Alung.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding the effects of teaching media and emotional intelligence on students’ speaking skill. The research is an experimental research involving 40 students in STIKes YPAK Padang. The data were collected by giving the students a speaking performance test and a questionnaire of emotional intelligence. The data was analyzed by using two ways analysis of variance (ANOVA 2x2). Before doing the analysis, the data normality was tested by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to see if the population where the sample was taken had normal distribution. The result of the research concluded: (1) Teaching media gives a significant effect on the students’ speaking skill. Test result obtained that p-value for category teaching media is 0,008 < 0,05 and F observe 7,931. (2) Emotional intelligence gives a significant effect on the students’ speaking skill in STIKes YPAK Padang. The result obtained that p-value for emotional intelligence is 0,000 < 0,05 and F observe 40,458. (3) Teaching media and emotional intelligence give significant interaction effects of students’ speaking skill. Test result retrieved that p-value for category of teaching media and emotional intelligence is 0,010 < 0,05 and F observe 7,393.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan prefix. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Sumber data didapatkan dari 40 orang mahassiswa angkatan ketiga tahun ajaran 2015/ 2016 STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat dengan menggunakan random sampling teknik. Peneliti menggunakan tes vocabulary prefix berbentuk pilihan berganda. Hasil analisis data penelitian menunjukkan persentase kemampuan skor mahasiswa dengan klasifikasi kemampuan baik berjumlah 25%, kemampuan cukup baik berjumlah 41,7% dan kemampuan kurang berjumlah 16,7%. Persentase kemampuan mahasiswa yang sudah mampu menggunakan prefix berjumlah 16,7%. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa menggunakan prefix tergolong cukup baik. This research was aimed at finding out students’ ability in using prefix. This was a descriptive research. The source of data of this research was taken from 40 students of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra at the third year registered in 2015/2016 academic year by using random sampling technique . The researcher used prefix vocabulary test in multiple choice form. The result of this research showed that the percentage of students’ score in good category 25%, fair 41.7%,  poor 16.7%. The percentage of students who were able to use prefix was 16.7%. So, it can be concluded that students’ ability in using prefix was fair.      Key words: students’ ability, prefix

Abstract

Most of EFL students argue that pronunciation is one of English components that is quite difficult to be mastered. It is proven by most students of English that the writer taught at College of Teacher Training and education (STKIP) PGRI West Sumatera. They get some difficulties in pronouncing particular words like the sounds of vowels, consonants, and diphthongs. It happened because most of sounds in English are not found in Indonesian contexts. To overcome this problem, the writer promotes an alternative way so that the students’ pronunciation can be better and improved. The way that the writer means  is using song dictation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah teks deskriptif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kemampuan siswa dalam memahami teks deskriptif pada kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Penuh tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Penuh.Jumlah populasi adalah 144 siswa, dan dibagi menjadi beberapa kelas. Sampel diambil dengan teknik cluster sampling. Dalam kasus ini, salah satu dari dua kelas akan menjadi sampel dan akan dipilih secara acak karena ada beberapa kelas yang homogeny karena mereka diajar oleh guru yang sama dengan materi yang sama. Jadi untuk melihat homogenitas populasi, penulis menggunakan rumus Fisher.Data penelitian ini adalah kemampuan siswa dalam memahami teks deskriptif. Ini difokuskan pada struktur generik dan informasi spesifik. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan uji bacaan. Sebelum penulis memberikan tes baca ke sampel, tes tersebut diujicobakan. Untuk mengetahui validitas dan reliabilitas uji, penulis menggunakan rumus Pearson Product Moment dan Spearman-Brown. Ditemukan bahwa reliabilitas uji korelasi tinggi (0,61).Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan membaca siswa dalam memahami teks deskriptif rendah. Bisa dilihat dari data, mayoritas siswa mendapat skor tinggi adalah 4,76%, dan total skor rendah adalah 33,33%.Berkaitan dengan hasilnya, penulis menyarankan agar siswa mempraktikkan kemampuan membaca mereka secara khusus dalam teks deskriptif. Jika mereka berlatih lebih banyak, mereka akan memiliki kemampuan membaca yang baik. Kepada guru bahasa Inggris, penulis menyarankan untuk memberikan lebih banyak penjelasan dan latihan untuk siswa yang terkait dengan teks deskriptif. Kemudian untuk peneliti lainnya, penulis menyarankan untuk mempelajari kesulitan siswa dalam teks deskriptif.
