Abstract

Exploring students’ background knowledge in pre-reading activities suggests the importance of interaction in the process of meaning making which requires appropriate vocabulary. Although many factors constitute students’ comprehension, vocabulary should be the main concern in EFL reading classes.  Consistence with this premise, the current study was aimed at proving the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading achievement at the fourth semester of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This correlational study involved 70 students taken through cluster random sampling. Vocabulary and reading test were employed to determine the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension.  Through Correlation of Product Moment, coefficient correlation between two variables was found to be 0.61 with index correlation in r-table was 0.1617 for α= 0.05, suggesting that the coefficient correlation between two variables (rxy) t-calculated was bigger than t-table.  It means that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. In conclusion, there was a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension at the fourth semester students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung

Abstract

With the development of teaching spoken English more oriented to fluency, obviously accuracy in spoken English is much neglected. Additionally, the changing language pedagogy into more integrated way results in how integrating linguistic components in the teaching spoken English becomes a challenging task for teachers. Optionally, integrating form and meaning-based activities into teaching spoken English is suggested to be able to raise EFL learners’ awareness to address not only language fluency but also accuracy. This study was aimed to find the effect of using guided speaking worksheets towards senior high school students’ accuracy in spoken English. Pre-test and post-test design was employed in this quasi-experimental research. With total random sampling technique, 22 senior high school students  were taken as the research sample of whom 11 were randomly assigned into experimental group, while the other were randomly assigned into control group. Samples in experimental group were received self-made speaking worksheets with target vocabulary, expressions and grammar attached for students to practice spoken English. Oral test was the research instrument in which its validity and reliability were determined by its content validity and inte-rrater coefficients correlation. With nonparametric analysis by MannWhitney U formula to test hypothesis. It was found that U-observed (-15) was smaller than Utable (34). It means that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. The conclusion is that there was significant effect of using self-made speaking worksheet towards the students’ accuracy in teaching spoken English. The research findings lead to a discussion of its recommendation to be used in teaching spoken English.

Abstract

Background Ovarian cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. In Indonesia, this incidence is the third highest after breast and cervical cancer. The prognosis for ovarian carcinoma is generally poor. Ovarian cancer patients have low survival rate since most of them diagnosed at advanced stage. The tumor spread to retroperitoneum lymph nodes is important to evaluate considering that metastasis to lymph nodes will upstage the tumor to stage III. Tumor histological type, grade and CA 125 serum level considered as risk factors for lymph node metastases. Methods This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the profile of lymph node metastases in ovarian carcinoma at the Anatomical Pathology Department FKUI-RSCM for 3 years. The assessment criteria included demographic, clinical, and histopathological features of tumor mass and retroperitoneum lymph nodes. Results Analysis of demographic data in 54 cases of ovarian carcinoma found 47 patients (87%) aged ≥40 years. Unilateral tumors found in 42 cases (77.8%) and bilateral tumors found in 12 cases (22.2%). Patients generally diagnosed at stage III as many as 17 cases (31.4%). Elevated levels of tumor marker CA 125 (≥35 u/ml) found in 41 cases (76%). A total of 19 cases of ovarian carcinoma had spread to lymph nodes, with 8 cases (42%) of which were serous carcinomas. Lymph node metastases found in 16 cases (80%) of high-grade ovarian carcinoma and 12 cases (60%) of advance-staged tumors. Macrometastatic tumor deposit patterns found in 180 lymph nodes and micrometastases found in 10 lymph nodes. Two subjects diagnosed for lymph node metastases only from micrometastasis deposit in lymph nodes. Conclusion Lymph node metastases in ovarian carcinoma are more frequently found in serous carcinoma, high grade carcinoma, and cases with elevated CA125 serum level. Lymph nodes evaluation should be conducted carefully to detect micrometastasis deposit.

Abstract

This study investigates the practice of pre-mortem inheritance distribution in Bangun Village, Gunung Malela District, Simalungun Regency an emerging phenomenon driven by the intention to prevent family conflict. Despite its pragmatic rationale, this practice contradicts Islamic inheritance law as articulated in the Shafi'i Madhhab, which mandates that inheritance be distributed only after the testator’s death in accordance with faraid principles established in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Employing a qualitative design and an empirical juridical approach, this research draws on interviews with three local families (Mr. I, Mrs. R, and Mr. S), direct field observations, and a thorough analysis of primary Islamic legal texts and existing scholarly literature. The findings reveal a consistent pattern: inheritance is divided equally among heirs before the testator’s death, often without reference to the obligatory shares stipulated in Sharia. While intended to foster familial harmony, this informal practice risks undermining the legal structure of Islamic inheritance, potentially resulting in systemic injustice and intra-family disputes. The study's novelty lies in its empirical focus on a rural Muslim community's deviation from classical jurisprudence, an area rarely explored in existing literature. It also highlights an urgent need for community-based legal education tailored to Islamic inheritance law within the Shafi'i Madhhab. This research contributes to the discourse on legal pluralism, revealing the tension between local customs and normative Islamic law, and calls for integrative strategies to realign community practices with the ethical and juridical imperatives of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
