International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. theatre, dance, music, live art, visual arts) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Ethnomusicology, Karawitanology, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts, Fine Arts, Photography. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

This article is the result of research on the manga style comic Garudayana. This departs from the reality on the ground that inthe last decade the Japanese comics or manga translation once mastered and favored market. However, one of the Indonesianlocal comics, which is able to penetrate the ranks of comic Garudayana translation, and has sales nearly match the success ofJapanese comic translation. It becomes background research on comics Garudayana especially in terms of style of drawing andcomic storytelling style. This study uses the concept of interpretation analysis using McCloud manga storytelling techniques,combined with the power of thought Darmawan over manga. The results of this study are of the form Garudayanacomic style character expression, the transition between panels and word balloons shapes, have a tendency to follow themanga style now favored by the people of Indonesia.Keyword : Manga,comic, Garudayana, Is Yuniarto

Abstract

Local culture, as the cultural heritage of a nation, was originally adhered to and believed to be a set of rules and norms to be upheld in traditional community life. In a traditional community, individuals tend not to have many choices through which they can formulate their identity, and are inclined to experience difficulty in breaking free from the shackle of normative values which exist in their socio-cultural and socio-religious environment and are adhered to like a doctrine. With the onset of modernity and globalization, the values which were formally a point of reference in a traditional community become worn away until old symbols gradually become weakened and eventually replaced by new symbols provided by the global cultural market. Today, local culture is nothing more than a series of symbols which are packaged as a commodity and have a high market value. Commercial advertisements appear using local cultural idioms as a strategy for their communication. Local culture is presented through verbal and visual language with the aim of creating a positive image of the product on offer. This huge problem is the basic idea of this research. Through a case study approach, the research aims to uncover various aspects which go into the making of an advertisement, or in other words, why is an advertisement created in such an attractive way? Why is the image of an advertisement so important in building the strength of a brand name? The advertisement used as the case study for this research is a cigarette advertisement which can be seen on Indonesian television stations. The main focus of this thesis is visual communication strategy through local cultural representation. This will then show the relationship between culture, image, and the mass media as the agent which conveys the message. The research uses an interpretative method of analysis as a tool for viewing the depth of meaning of the advertisement. Keywords: local culture, advertisement, representation, television

Abstract

Pickers in a tea plantation present an interesting phenomenon, not only from a historical perspective but also from the point ofview of their anatomical experiences. Their hand movements are very fast, as though they are dancing on top of the tea leaves,and these movements are supported by formations that they unconsciously make in the wide expanse of the tea plantation.Based on a close observation of the tea pickers in Kayu Aro, Kerinci, Jambi, a new choreography entitled “Sang Pemetik” (ThePicker) was created, with the aim of reflecting on the history and daily experiences of the tea pickers. Using a ParticipatoryAction Research method, or PAR, the dance “Sang Pemetik” aims to make a statement that tea picking is a noble job and caneven provide inspiration for an attractive work of art.Keywords: Reflection, Tea Pickers, Choreography “Sang Pemetik”

Abstract

Artikel ini adalah hasil dari penelitian tentang “Karya Fotografi Infrared Dibyo Gahari” bertujuan untuk mengkaji mengapa Dibyo Gahari memilih fotografi Infrared, bagaimana proses “pengoprekan” infrared Dibyo Gahari dan bagaimana karya infrared Dibyo Gahari apabila dikaji dengan pendekatan estetika. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan estetika. Metode pengumpulan data dengan studi pustaka, observasi, dan wawancara. Untuk menjelaskan kajian estetika digunakan teori estetika Monroe Breadsley. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa Dibyo Gahari memilih fotografi infrared karena warna false colour yang menjadikan karyanya unik dan dramatis. Keunikannya terjadi pada warna-warna yang berubah menjadi warna kecoklatan atau keputihan.  Untuk foto pada kulit manusia menjadi pucat. Proses pengoprekan karya Dibyo Gahari yang menjadikan karyanya lebih unik dari sebelumnya, yaitu dengan memasang sebuah lensa khususinfrared di depan sensor mengganti hot mirror dalam kamera DSLRnya. Estetika yang terkandung dalam karya fotografi Dibyo Gahari yang memberikan nuansa keindahan yaitu pada dominansi obyek dan dominansi warna kontras antara obyek yang memberi kesatuan, saling melengkapi antara obyek, yang satu dengan yang lain. Kata kunci: Infrared, Dibyo Gahari.

Abstract

In Balinese traditional sacred architecture, there were many ornaments which were basically in the form of particular animals and plants. One of the many ornaments is in the figure of serpent. The serpent which was in the figure of a mythological giant snake was related to the function of the building. This study discussed about the symbolic serpent symbolizing the earth or land, water, the river flow, the clouds, the rainbow, and as one part of a chronograph. Abstract

Karya musik judul “Dapurmu” berpijak dari pengambaran realitas peristiwa dapur oleh masyarakat gunung. Peristiwa itu meliputi segala aktivitas sosial termasuk pemaknaan ulang tentang arti dapur bagi masyarakat Jawa. Lewat karya ini kemudian dapat diketahui bahwa dapur bukan semata persoalan tempat,namun juga menjadi tolok ukur objektif dalam melihat detai-detail keadaban dan peradaban masyarakat pemiliknya. Fenomena itu diterjemahkan dalam bentuk karya musik, sehingga memungkinkan timbulnya tafsir dan wacana baru tentang dapur. Selain itu karya ini mencoba menjadi ruang pertemuan perbagai lapisan masyarakat untuk bersosialisasi dan saling menyapa. Sekaligus menjadi ruang refleksi dan kriktik bagi masyarakat mutakhir yang semakin individualis ABSTRACTMusical creation entitled “Dapurmu” based on the depiction of the reality of the events of the kitchen of the mountains community. The events encompass all social activities, including the repeated meaning of kitchen for Javanese people. Trough the creation it was known that kitchen was not simply viewed as a place, but it also becomes the objective yardsticks to see the civilization of its owner in detail. The phenomenon was later transformed into the musical creations to allow interpretation and a new discourse about the kitchen. Also, it also became o place of meetings for all various of people to socialize and to greet. Besides, it also as a space of reflection and criticism for more individual modern society.

Abstract

The article is the result of the research entitled “The optimalization of tourism in Sukuh and Ceto areas, Kabupaten Karanganyar by increasing the potency of traditional art as a means of creative economic development”. The research aimed at making a model for developing an integrated tourism in Sukuh and Ceto areas which could be empowered as a an effort at increasing public economy and at strengthening local culture. A two-year research was carried out to attain the goal. The results of the first stage research are as follows: many kinds of art have been identified completely and comprehensively; a plan of developing art for tourism which can have an effect on economic development of the local society has been known; the model of art created is based on the approach of art for tourism with the following characteristics: an imitation of the original, compressedor short, the primary values are put aside, full of variation, attractive, and low in price. The conception of art for tourism is developed in accordance with the condition of the local society, culture, and the environment in order to create a specific art for tourism.  The conception of art for tourism has the following characteristics. First, the art for tourism has a specific characteristic. Second, the art is specially designed considering the character of the area. Third, the art should have a contextual feature, meaning it is created by considering the natural elements, belief, customs, and local wisdom and it should not destroy the nature. Fourth, the art should pay attention to visual elements. Key words: traditional art, creative economy, art for tourism, model formulation.

Abstract

The results of the research showed that the art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis is an art  form which is closed related to the ritual ceremonies held regularly by the community  of Baros village in the Arjasari district of Bandung.   In performance, the structure of this art form includes the preparation of offerings, the reading of a prayer, the recitation of a kind of magical spell or incantation, and other elements known as pangambatan,  bangbalikan, and mangkat lakon, or the presentation of the story.  The function of this kind of performance is as a rice ceremony (known as netepken Ibu), an expression of  thanks, or an exorcism ritual.   The symbolic meaning contained in the performance reflects the way of life, traditions, and cus- toms of the local community.   This research  aims to explain the form, function, and symbolic meaning of Pantun Giriwangi Ki  Akis,  contained in the story of Mundinglaya Dikusumah.  An analytical descriptive method was used for the study. This method is a procedure used to solve a problem by describing the object of the research based on the data collected, and then carrying out an accurate analysis of the data.The data for the research was collected using a  bibliographical study, including a study of various literature and audio-visual  recordings.   The main activity of the study was to watch a recording of a performance and then attempt to identify which were the important parts of the performance to be  studied and analysed in more depth.   Additional data was collected through interviews  and documentation.  The art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis is closely related to the ritual ceremonies held regularly by the community of Baros village in the Arjasari dis- trict of Bandung.  This is of great importance since the community believes that by performing  Pantun as a part of these ritual ceremonies, their lives will become better.  The art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis contains a number of symbolic mean- ings which set a good  example to follow and can be used as a foundation on which people can base their  lives. Keywords: Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis, form, function, symbolic meaning

Abstract

Budaya barat yang modern mulai merambah ke masyarakat terutama menyebar dengan cepat sekali ke anak-anak, remaja, bahkan orang tua. Mulai dari televisi, film, gadget, media sosial,dan sebagainya. Dampaknya luar biasa mengubah kebiasaan yang sudah membudaya di Indonesia. Anak-anak mulai hidup di dunia maya dengan berbagai fasilitas media sosial yang sedang menjamur. Keberadaan budaya kita semakin lama tergerus dengan kebudayaan barat yang mulai membanjiri di setiap ruang. Salah satunya budaya tembang macapat mulai terkikis dengan budaya yang lebih modern. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui eksistensi tembang Macapat di kalangan generasi muda dan upaya preventif dalam rangka alkuturasi budaya barat di kalangan generasi muda. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian pustaka. Penelitian pustika diawali dengan penggalian ide-ide atau gagasan dan konsep-konsep yang dihubungkan satu sama lain melalui hipotesis tentang hubungan yang diharapkan. Adapun Ide-ide dan konsep-konsep untuk penelitian pustaka dapat bersumber dari gagasan peneliti sendiri dan dapat juga bersumber dari sejumlah kumpulan pengetahuan hasil kerja sebelumnya yang dikenal juga sebagai literatur atau pustaka. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan eksistensi tembang Macapat di kalangan generasi muda dan menemukan upaya preventif dalam rangka alkuturasi budaya barat di kalangan generasi muda.ABSTRACTModern western culture began to spread to the community, especially spread rapidly to children, adolescents, and even parents. Starting from television, movies, gadgets, social media, and so on. The impact is extraordinary in changing habits that have become entrenched in Indonesia. Children begin to live in cyberspace with various social media facilities that are mushrooming. The existence of our culture is increasingly eroded by western culture which is beginning to flood in every room. One of them is the macapat song culture which is eroded with a more modern culture. This study aims to find out the existence of Macapat songs among the younger generation and preventive efforts in the framework of the alkururasi western culture among the younger generation. This research is a type of library research. Pustika research begins with the excavation of ideas or ideas and concepts that are connected to each other through hypotheses about the expected relationship. The ideas and concepts for library research can be derived from the ideas of the researchers themselves and can also be derived from a number of collections of previous work knowledge which is also known as literature or literature. The results of this study are to describe the existence of Macapat songs among the younger generation and find preventive efforts in the framework of the alkururasi western culture among the younger generation.

Abstract

This article presents and identifies the formand symbolicmeaning of the batikmotif known asmodang, cemukiran. Thepresentation beginswith an explanation of the formof the batikmotifmodang, cemukiran, followed by an interpretationof the symbols surrounding it. The symbols are interesting in that a single symbol can explain a dual function, namely atranscendent-vertical function (related to reference, size, and the behavioural patterns of the community) and an immanenthorizontalfunction (as a means of communication based on its context and close connection with the solidarity of thesupporting community). In order to discovermore about the symbols surrounding the batikmotifmodang, cemukiran, itis first necessary to learn about the background of the personwho designed thismotif. Based on the nature of thought of theJavanese with regard to sacred symbols,which are constantly used as guidelines in every aspect of their lives, themodangand cemukiranmotif can be understood to be a symbol of flames.Modang and cemukiran aremotifswhich have certainsimilarities from the point of view of their visual form. The modang motif can be said to be a form of stylization of thearrangement or organization of the shape of firewhich has a flexible nature. Based on this analysis, the shape of the fire canbe said to be closer to its real form, whereas the shape of the cemukiranmotif ismore of a deformation of shape; that is, anornamentation created by breaking down and then rearranging the shape to achieve the desired form. In itsmanifestation, fireis elaborated in the formofmodang and cemukiranmotifs,whose application appears on batik cloth, the decorative plating onthe sheath of a traditional dagger or keris, and a number of ornaments on the interior of the palace or keraton.Keywords: Symbol,Modang,Cemukiran, Flames
