Abstract

Mlale Village, Sub District Jenar, District Sragen has a unique tradition, namely a ritual conducted  by a local community. This ritual is held to celebrate a wedding ceremony by performing Tayub. This research aims to:  a) describe the wedding ceremony at Mlale Village by performing Tayub as its ritual means, b) interprete the meaning of movements  and melody (gendhing) in Tayub dance. The style of this research is interpretative description of a qualitative nature. The first step in this research is data collection through field study, observation,and interviews, and the second step is data processing by analyzing qualitatively the form, function and meaning. Those steps are applied consecutively beginning from reduction, data reformation or display, and ending in conclusion. This research uses a holistic approach involving all aspects in performing art. The research results show that  the performance is meant as a gratitude and request  to God hoping that  wedding will  last eternally,  and be blessed, be protected against disturbance, be granted all desire, have a child  and happiness. Key words : ritual, Tayub, meaning, Sragen

Abstract

Childhood  is the most vulnerable time to try something new  especially food and drink. Children are easily interested in snacks advertized in television. They do not know how dangerous it is to health if manufacturers do not pay a close attention to the composition of the snack. It is their parents who should monitor the child’s behavior in consuming the snack. This paper aims to find out the impact of advertisement  on snacks to children’s health.  The data was collected through literary study such as books, journals and so on. An advertisement is very influential to children’s behavior in choosing their snack. Children do not know the danger of consuming the snack. Parents should monitor the snack bought by children. Key words : children, snack, advertisement, television

Abstract

Gender wayang is one of Balinese gamelan instruments made of bronze which has ten keys and five notes in slendro tuning. So there is a bass system. Mesangih is a ceremony for cutting teeth which aims to “kill” sad ripu (six enemies existing in human being) in order that it can be controlled. The ceremony is also meant to purify something leteh in order to be able to meet Mother and Father (Hyang Widhi) in the life after death. Mesangih is accompanied by gender wayang melodies in accordance  with the character of each melody to support the atmosphere needed. Key words : Gender wayang melodies, mesangih

Abstract

The aim of physical exercise learning is to prepare one’s body for being a dancer. Besides maximum quality in movement, a dancer also needs a strong body. Learning effectively is a must in view of limited time. To achieve effectiveness in physical exercise learning, data collection by observation and interview is needed. Technique of data processing is conducted by structure analysis covering a concept, method, approach, and theory. The research results show that physical exercise has used theory based on self-defense called karate since the beginning of 1980. A new method of physical exercise according to the dancer’s need is required. There are many steps in physical exercise such as warming up, movement variation and cooling down ; generally, all of them can be applied. Some movements which are compatible with a dancer’s demand need interpreting to make them more effective. It means the training takes less time but the result will support  the endurance of a   prospective dancer. Key words : physical exercise, effectiveness, dancer, method

Abstract

A dance is the expression of the soul actualized through verbal and non-verbal medium. Kinds of medium present in dancing are not only material in nature but they are enhanced, managed, and enriched with ideas so that they result in sensation. The sensation quality has ideas that form imagination which triggers feeling or emotion so that the imagination becomes alive. As a matter of fact, beauty lies in the audience themselves not in the object because an artist does not provide anything but a stimulus. In the performing art, a living imagination is something we think beautiful. In Javanese dances the fundamental form of aesthetics is related to the natural environments and the main goal is a means of reaching the perfection of life. Key words : sensation, emotion, aesthetics and dance

Abstract

This research aims at studying the understanding and response of the Javanese society to the moral teachings of KGPAA Mangkunegara IV in serat Wedhatama in this globalization era. The strategy used in this research is an embedded case study research. The data source made use in this research is the text in Serat Wedhatama. The data taken from  literary studies is used to study the objective and genetic factors and  the information obtained  from  cultural observers, lecturers of regional literature, members of Mangkunegaran palace is used to study the affective factor. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling, while the data was collected through in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and then was analyzed using holistic critical analysis (Sutopo, 2006). The validity of the data was endorsed using the  triangulation method. The results showed that the moral teachings of KGPAA Mangkunegara IV had a close relation to God Almighty, the wise method of social intercourse, nobleman in spirit, respect for other’s opinion and struggle for life. The moral teachings of KGPAA Mangkunegara IV summarized from Serat Wedhatama are as follows: (1) moral teachings in the forms of  advices, guidance, persuasion, and messages; (2) warning; (3) prohibition; (4) criticism; (5) statements, and (6) teachings. The moral teaching offered is generally in the form of a suggestion through a metaphor. The suggestion given uses the method of esem mantri which means the smile of  punggawa mantri and semu bupati which means the regent’s amusing face.Key words : moral teachings, Serat Wedhatama, Tembang Macapat, sanepa, esem mantra, punggawa mantra, and semu bupati

Abstract

This writing aims at describing the factors causing differences of styles in puppetry.  There are two differences of styles in puppetry, namely: (1) the difference of style in garap elements in puppetry, and (2) the difference of style between the wayang performance and other performing art. The difference of style in puppetry is influenced by global cultural changes, mass media, the authoritative repression, and other social cultural aspects. The tendency of differences in style in wayang performance is influenced by (a)   the waning of locality and the local identity of puppeteers and of wayang audience because of the openness of tradition, (b) the effort made extraordinarily by puppeteers for legitimacy because they are capable of conducting a variety of styles in a major style, (c) for the reason of creativity and innovation, a puppeteer combines various styles and adopts other performing arts in wayang performance. Key words : difference of styles, wayang performance, cultural changes, puppeteer, local identity

Abstract

Indang is one of traditional arts which develops in Pariaman, West Sumatra. This traditional art is a combination of literature and dance movements. This research aims to find out the textual and functional changes developing in accordance with the society’s taste. The data was collected through observation, interviews, and literary study. The data was analyzed using an analysis on textual and functional changes. The research result showed that the vocal of Indang dance existed in small Muslim chapels accompanied by songs containing Islamic lyrics. The indang dance had changed from a sacred into a profane dance. That the movements of Indang dance are relatively simple and monotonous but the dance keeps on existing is interesting. The Islamic teaching in the lyric of oral literature always complies with the society’s taste. Indang dance functions as entertainment and a means of communication performed for a variety of purposes. Key words :  indang, textual, changes, function, Pariaman Pengantar
