Abstract

This article demonstrates that a variety of local languages, like Javanese, Sundanese and Malay, have become a medium for writing Al-Qur’an commentaries in the archipelago. The choice of local languages for these texts is closely connected to the social-cultural circumstances where they were produced. For example commentaries in Malay Jawi appear in Aceh and Sumatra while commentaries in Javanese are found in the palaces and pesantren of Java. Moreover, the process of adoption and adaptation of Islam to local culture also characterized the dynamics of commentary writing in the region. Some commentators wrote in the Malay or Javanese language with an Arabic script and yet, while the influence of local cultures was so strong, other commentators used both the Arabic language.

Abstract

Although the market share of Islamic banking is still relatively small, the growth and development of Islamic banking and financial institutions in Indonesia has been quite encouraging. To support the process of socialization and institutionalization of sharia banking working better, the existence of reliable and highly qualified Human Resources is indispensable. This article examines the characteristics of Sharia-based human resources derived from the philosophical framework of Islamic Economics. There are at least four Islamic philosophical basis of economics, namely tauhid (monotheism), justice and balance, freedom, and responsibility. For Islamic financial institutions, both banking and non-banking, as the business institutions based on values and principles of sharia, the qualification and quality of human resources are about an integration between the “knowledge, skill and ability” (KSA) with moral commitment and personal integrity. Some morality aspects referred here are alShiddiq (true, honest), al-amanah (trustworthy, credible), al-Tabligh (communicative) and al-fathanah (intelligent, professional). Moreover, in managing a business, the moral aspects were even as “key success factor”.

Abstract

An important problem in the discourse of Islamic political study is the problem of decision-making process within the political order of a country. Does Islam follow a view of absolutism in the decision making process. How does representative institutions decision become a constitutional decision. What is the form of consultation can be done to get the best decision. Almost all forms of Islamic political thought agree to make syûrâ (consultation system, consulting) as a tool to create a state decision. Yet, the debate is on the problems that can be decided or determined through the mechanism of the syûrâ. For Ibn Taymiyyah, people are the main owners of state power. Determination of choice for power players and the way of power are completely in the hands of the people. They are the owners of the leadership in general. They are entitled to elect and dismiss the leader, as they also decide the broad outlines of state policy that must be done by him. Moreover, the authority outlines is not on the leader, but on the whole people. However, the syûrâ is not like the promoted Western liberal democracy. It has its characteristics, traits and principles.

Abstract

The article tries to address the concept of civil society from varied perspectives. From a historical point of view, civil society demands not only the absent domination of state but also liberates individuals from the hegemony of state. The article shows that in Indonesia and Malaysian discourse, masyarakat madani is often used to represent the term of civil society. Using this conception, major values of civil society also share with basic ideas within the Medina Treaty in the history of Islam. These ideas include egalitarianism, human rights protection, participation, law and justice enforcement and pluralism. In this frame, the question on whether or not Islam is compatible with the concept of civil society is clearly answered. Muslims could benefit such a concept to build their awareness of being progressive and adaptive to social changes.

Abstract

This article contributes to the analysis of the “madani society” discourse and its development in Indonesia as a form of a struggle and dialectic of intellectual Muslim to interpret Islamic teachings in its relationship to modern life, especially to politics and nationality problems. The Islamic basic concept about the democratic principles such as justice, equality, freedom and deliberation, including the attitudes of tolerance and recognition of human rights actually had been developed well over the Apostles and the Khilafat ‘al-Rashidin political and social life. This Islamic political concept is tried to be reconstructed back by Muslim intellectuals with the idea of madani community. The presence of this discourse in Indonesia seems externally to be affected by the discourse of civil society that had been becoming a global currents of thought since the 1990s, and internally cannot be separated from the condition of the nation at that time, especially the unavailability of public space, besides as the impact of the model static approach developed in the New Order political reality.

Abstract

This article addresses issues related to the interfaith dialogue, focusing on the historical context from which it emerged and uncovering the tacit assumptions underlying the idea. It is argued that interfaith dialogue is part and parcel of the Christian mission which seeks to promote inclusivism but also eventually leads to pluralism and relativism. In addition, the article also discusses the three approaches taken by Muslims throughout centuries in dealing with people of other faiths. It goes without saying that Islam is not only a religion, it is also a creator and living spirit of major world civilization including Malay, with a long history stretching over fifteen centuries based mainly on wahyu as the source of all activities in various dimensions, emotional, spiritual as well as intellectual. This fact is the very reason why human being, as the most perfect creation, become the important topic of the Qur’an to act properly for the sake of reaching and endless happiness in both here and hereafter by keenly observing and understanding the milestones of this civilization through ages. Keeping in view the above reality, an organized steps should be made to enhance the process of learning and teaching of Arabic language of the future, because it is the way to rediscover the values which keep human creativities moving towards right direction for the better future of humanity. Allama Muhammad Iqbal said: “The secret of life and the essence of it is movement. I exist so long as I move, when I cease to move I shall cease to be”.
