Abstract

The topic of this study is about Romanticism of James Horner's songs that entitled If We Hold On Together, Somewhere Out There, I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You. The purpose of this study is to find out how James Horner expressed romanticism in his literary works. The theories used to analyze the data are expressive theory made by M.H Abrams and poetry theory from Persy Bysshe Shelly. The research design used is quantitative research. Data collection and analysis techniques by conducting intense readings and conducting content analysis. The research findings show that the romanticism in James Horner's song utilizes parallelism, hyperbole, personification, symbol, imagery, and antitheses. The romanticism expressed by James Horner in his song entitled If We Hold On Together, Somewhere Out There and I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You is to tell about the beauty of nature, emotions, feelings and intuitions that are poured out of the author through a message songs lyrics inspired by stories of movie imagination.

Abstract

This article aimed to find out the vocabulary mastery on food and drink by the 4th Grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. This thesis uses quantitative research because it is focused on number and analyzing data. The thesis writer uses written test to gather the data from the 4th grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. After conducting, the thesis writer takes the student?s test paper to analyze how far the students have mastered vocabulary of food and drink. The test consists of 36 Items, divided into three parts. Part 1 is pictures matching, part 2 is blanks filling, and part 3 is essay. Each part has 12 numbers of questions with pictures of food and drink. The thesis writer finds that there are 9 students participate on the test. There are 1 student who gets B+(11.11%), 2 students who get B (22.22%), 1 students who get C (11.11%), 4 students who get D (44.44%), and 1student who gets E (11.11%). It can be concluded that there are 4 students who pass the test and 5 students who fail in mastering vocabulary. He hopes that this thesis could be a guide for teachers and students to improve theirvocabulary.Keywords: vocabulary, mastery, ability

Abstract

Advertisement is a media communication which contains sign the most. In order to achieve the selling goals, companies will provide advertisement to introduce their product. In this matter, the thesis writer focuses on analyzing figurative language in advertisement. They are two objectives intended to be solved in this thesis, they are to describe types of figurative language and describe the meaning of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics advertisement found in Pinterest. This study was conducted to analyze the uses of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics of the catalogue online Pinterest. This study focuses on observing the words which contain figurative language by using Perrine?s theory. The method of this study uses descriptive qualitative because the researcher described the sentence that is categorized into figurative language. Whereas, data source were taken from advertisement catalogue online Pinterest which were publish on 2016 to 2018. The result of the data shows that there are eleven sentences which contain eight categorized figurative language and seventeen word that found in advertisement. The study found that there are eight kinds of figurative language which appeared in Maybelline advertisement such as: Personification, paradox, metaphor, apostrophe, symbol, allegory, hyperbole, and repetition. Keyword: Language, Figurative Language, Maybelline Advertisement

Abstract

Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God is a novel that reflects African-American social life in the early 20th century. This thesis examines the proofs of Janie Crawford alienation in every aspect of her life. In order to analyze the problem, the thesis uses a theory of alienation stated and applies qualitative method. Firstly, the thesis begins to read the novel and then collects the data. Then, this thesis carry on the process of analyzing the data collecting with the theory and making a conclusion at last. The findings of this thesis exhibits Janie Crawford's powerlessness and self-estrangement that can be seen through every events of her life with her familiarpeople. Keywords: Alienation, Powerlessness, Self-estrangement

Abstract

This research focuses on study of the forms of jargon and functions that used by foodandbeveragedivisionatTheAlimarPremierHotelSurabaya.The study writer uses the theory of sociolinguisticsby Chaer (1994) to answer the language varities in the form of jargon and also the theory of function of jargon by Ives (1999) that used by the employeesin the food and beverage division at The Alimar Premier Hotel Surabaya. This study uses qualitative method to analyze the jargon. The aim ofqualitativemethoditselfistoobtainsystematicallydescriptionandaccuratefacts. It concerns with the collected data that often uses words. To collect the data, the first step that the thesis writer used was recording some conversations between the employees in thesame division. After recording the conversations, the thesis writer transcribes the data into a table and classifies what are the inventions of the language varities in the form of jargon shich is found inthe conversation. After analyzing the data, the jargon that usually spoken by the employees in the food and beverage division are in the form words and phrases. By using jargon to explain somethingtothesamedivision,theyareabletospeakusingmorelanguagevarieties
