Abstract

Crocidolomia pavonana is an important pest of Brassicaceous vegetable crops. Botanical insecticides are potential alternatives for the control of C. pavonana pest. Insecticidal activity of Piper aduncum and Sapindus rarak fruit extracts as well as their mixtures was evaluated against C. pavonana larvae in the laboratory. Ethyl acetate P. aduncum (EtPa) extract as well as methanolic S. rarak (MeSr) and aqueous S. rarak (AqSr) extracts were tested separately and in mixtures against second-instar larvae C. pavonana by a leaf-residue feeding method. At the LC95 level - 72 hours after treatment (HAT), EtPa extract was about 14.5 and 12.8 times, respectively, more toxic to C. pavonana larvae than MeSr and AqSr extracts. At the LC95 level, EtPa + MeSr extract mixture (1 : 10 w/w) was about 1.64 times more toxic to the test larvae than EtPa + AqSr extract mixture (1 : 10 w/w). Based on combination index at 48, 72, and 96 HAT, EtPa + MeSr extract mixture at LC50 level as well as EtPa + AqSr extract mixture at LC50 and LC95 levels had additive joint action, whereas EtPa + MeSr extract mixture at LC95 was weakly synergistic. In addition to lethal effect, the treatment with all test materials delayed the development of C. pavonana larvae from second-instar to fourth instar. Thus, EtPa, MeSr, and AqSr extracts as well as the mixtures between EtPa and S. rarak extracts are potential alternatives for the control of C. pavonana pest.

Abstract

Parasitoid Anagyrus lopezi (De Santis) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was introduced into Indonesia in early 2014 to control the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). The objective of study was to determine encapsulation rate of parasitoid A. lopezi by various host instars of P. manihoti. Observation of encapsulation rate was made  by exposing a single mated female of parasitoid on mealybug nymph-1, -2, -3, and adult in a plastic cage for 24 h. Mealybugs then were dissected and number of parasitoid eggs laid and those encapsulated were counted. Study revealed that rate of aggregate encapsulation was highest (8.4%) by adults, followed by nymph-3 (5.8%), nymph-2 (3.1%), and nymph-1 (1.1%). Rate of effective encapsulation by adults was 2.0%, whereas by nymphs about  1.0%. The low rate of encapsulation is believed not to reduce the effectiveness of parasitoid A. lopezi in the biological control of cassava mealybug P. manihoti in Indonesia.

Abstract

Hermetia illucens, is used as a reducing agent of palm kernel meal (PKM), as well as one of alternative protein sources for aquaculture purposes. Information about biology of H. illucens is absolutely required in mass production. The objectives of these researches were to study the development of H. illucens including the effect of supplementary food to the adult, and nutrient content of the immature stage. The sample of 20 larvae from each 3 replicates were measured and weighed on 0-19th day (larva) and 24th day (pupa) from egg hatching. H. illucens adults were fed by water and honey 5% (v/v). Eggs were collected and counted. Nutrient content of immature stage: 5, 10, 15, 20 days old (larvae), and 25 days old (prepupae) reared on PKM were analyzed proximately. Dry matter was determined by weight loss on drying at 105 oC during overnight. Crude protein was determined by Kjeldahl procedure (N x 6.25), crude fat by soxhlet (ether extract), crude ash by determining the residue after heating at 550 oC for 4–5 h. Data were analyzed descriptively by average from triplicate. The development of H. illucens was shorter than those in previous studies as the differences of abiotical factor. PKM was a suitable medium for development. It was better, however, to fed the adult with honey since it could enhance the fecundity. The young larva certainly contained the best quality of nutrition. To meet the quantity of mass production, however, the use of the elder larva (bigger) was suggested.

Abstract

A field study was carried out to assess the effects of mixed cultivar plantings on grain yields and on the abundance of pests in rice. Increasing plantation species diversity through cultivar mixtures is often claimed to decrease pest problems while stabilizing or even increasing yield, but the effects on pest abundance of planting rice cultivar mixtures in Indonesia have not been extensively studied. We tested for changes in pest abundance in experimental plots planted with five genetically distinct rice cultivars, combined in two different mixture arrangements (seed mix and row mix). These mixes were cultivated in lowland paddy areas, in replicated randomized block designs, during two growing seasons. Pest abundance was measured weekly in all plots, and rice yields were measured at harvest time. The results showed that the average abundance of pests was reduced in plots planted with cultivar mixes, compared to those planted with monocrops comprised of each of the component cultivars. Plots planted with the seed mix showed consistently reduced brown plant-hopper (Nilaparvata lugens (Stål)) abundance compared to monocrops in each growing season, with a relative reduction in pest abundance of 29.83% at the end of season 1 and 6.61% at the end of season 2, respectively. Plots planted with the row mix consistently showed decreased stem borer abundance compared to monocrops in each growing season, with a relative reduction in pest abundance of 100% at the end of season 1 and 1.4% at the end of season 2, respectively. In terms of yield, plant height proved to be a consistent yield component character, correlating positively with plant yield for both seed mix and row mix in both growing seasons. Our results showed higher average yields –and plant heights--for the mixed genotype plots compared to pure genotype stands in 2013. We found a greater relative increase in the yield of seed mix plots than row mix, measuring 7.26% and  4.63%, respectively in 2013. Among the two types of mixtures, seed mix showed higher overall grain yield. Our findings suggest that rice farmers can both increase yield and decrease pest abundance by planting cultivar mixes.

Abstract

One option to lessen the problems arising from the use of synthetic insecticides is to exploit plants that have insecticidal activities, such as species of Calophyllum(Clusiaceae). The study has been conducted to prepare insecticidal formulation from C. soulattri bark extract and to evaluate their residual activity against C. pavonana. Formulation prepared by using emulsifier, solvent, and sticking agent. Colour, acidity and emulsion stability were recorded as physic-chemical character of formulation. The result showed that the formulation of C. soulattri bark extract was stable, and their pH was normal. Bioassay of residual activity was done using leaf-residual method. Formulation of bark extract of 66 EC sprayed in suspension concentration of 1% on potted broccoli plant had residual activity around 70.7%-72% with range of half-lives of 9.4-9.6 days.

Abstract

The Role of Brush Border Membrane Vesicle (BBMV) in The Baculovirus Infection. Although baculovirus becoming recognized as potential important agents for control pests, there are several important obstacles for commercial use insecticide. One important obstacle is their narrow host. The other obstacle is due to its development resistance, the phenomenon whereby host larvae become progressively more resistant to fatal infection as they age within and among instars. From practical stand point, this phenomenon impacts the effectiveness of baculovirus control programs against agricultural and forest insect pests that is necessary to adjust application levels in the response to the demography of the target insect population. Purified columnar cells derived from midgut of armyworm Pseudaletia separata was used for fusion assay and observed by means of fluorescence assay based on self-quenching of octadecylrhodamine B chloride (R18). Confocal microscopy of the columnar cells that had been combined with labeled virus showed that the fluorescence appeared on the apical part in the brush border membrane, this indicated that there was fusion between virus and the cells. Two dimensional SDS-PAGE and immunobloting assay confirmed that the receptor exist within the columnar cells.

Abstract

Red spider mite Tetranychus sp. is one of the most important pests attacking leaves of Jatropha curcas. The objective of this study was to elucidate life history parameters and abundance of spider mite on two J. curcas cultivars. Field studies were carried out in BALITTRI Pakuwon Sukabumi, and laboratory experiments were conducted at the Department of Plant Protection, Bogor Agricultural University, from June to November 2008. Cultivars significantly affected several life history parameters of the spider mite. Spider mite reared on IP1-P cultivar have longer oviposition period and higher fecundity than those on IP2-P (7.00 days and 25.56 eggs against 5.00 days and 10.00 eggs). The sex ratio of spider mite was 3.2 : 1 on IP1-P and 2.5 : 1 on IP2-P. Intrinsic rate of increase was also higher on IP1-P. However, field studies indicated that the spider mite were less abundant on this cultivar. These might be due to the presence of other arthropods which were higher on IP1-P. In general, the highest population of spider mite occurred in August and the lowest in October–November. Predatory mite Family Phytoseiidae was found associated with spider mite, however its role as natural control agent was not significant.
