Abstract

As a relatively new field of study, queer studies is still underexamined in Indonesian gender and sexuality discourse and studies. In addition to its complexities, examining and teaching sexualities in university is often perceived as ‘taboo’ and ‘indecent’. This claim becomes an impedement for queer studies to expand its coverage in tertiary institutions. In order to mainstream queer studies to public and university students, as a guest lecturer in several universities in Indonesia, the author tried to invent a participatory approach which put greater emphasis on reflexivity experience of the students, while the lecturer becomes a facilitator to generate meaningful and active discussions with the students. This reflection paper is an attempt to summarize the strategy of teaching queer studies in tertiary institutions, based on the author’s own teaching experience.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the experience of women across generation living and interpreting love as part of their lives. Their experiences in living an interpreting love will be seen in two points, their romantic relationship and marriage or family institution. Based on the data of six subjects of research with different backgrounds like age, marital status and sexual orientation, showed that they have different perspective on love and marriage or family institution compare to mainstream society. They assume and believe love or romantic relationship has close relation with patriarchal cultural values, like men’s domination, subordination and ownership if we agreed with mainstream society’s thought on love. They also believe that marriage is an institution where patriarchy’s cultural values is produced there and will disadvantage women if the marriage is not built on equal and just relation. These six subjects of research agree with grand feminism narrative that love supposed to be not always related with ownership, men’s domination and must be liberating women as an independence and autonomous person.

Abstract

Feminist pedagogy explicitly documented equal and inclusive interactions that is aware of the existence of the other in the text and practice of knowledge. Feminist pedagogy is not a tool or collection strategy, but it is a philosophy which links the theory of teaching and learning that putting feminism in its central dynamics. It accepts to be appreciated, criticized, and fought as a form of knowledge dynamics. First, it did the work of resistance against hierarchy and domination. Second, it used the experience as a source of knowledge. Third, it made a transformation and realization in arrays of critical ways. This paper investigates two studies centers: Gender Studies Graduate Program of UI (later shortened as KG UI), which was established in 1990; and Islam & Gender Study UIN Kalijaga (later shortened as IKG UIN YK) which was established in 2015. In-depth interviews are mainly done to the founders of the graduate school at the two universities, lecturers and students.

Abstract

Media representations of women who have positions as ministers in President Joko Widodo’s Kabinet Kerja become phenomenon. On one side, media exposes aspects of successful side of female ministers. Media cited the statement of Presiden Jokowi that there are two “first woman” as appreciation. But, on the other side, media representations have masculinity character. For female minister who has “unique body performance”, the exposure of media are so excessive. Media had been trapped in the calculation of news values as reference for gathering news. The news values have been controlled by masculinity discourse that legitimate patriarchal regime of truth.

Abstract

Women never make choices about their work democratically. In patriarchal society, “women’s work” is constructed as work that is in the area of social reproduction and is “natural” for women. Consequently, women are increasingly in a vulnerable position in the labor market. In addition, women also face obstacles to being actively involved in various democratic spaces such as unions and women’s movements, and wider social movements because they bear a double workload that is life-consuming. However, various women’s empowerment programs launched by a number of development institutions to overcome the problems faced by women turned out to be far from women’s interests. Empowerment, also known as “liberal empowerment”, actually depoliticized and atomized women. Feminist scholars also call for the importance of realizing “liberating empowerment”. Related to that, this paper sees that the process of democratization of work on women’s work is an effort that can be done to pave the way for women’s liberation.

Abstract

This article explores the complexity of the relationship between democracy and feminism in both theory and practice. For a long time, feminist theorists have put forward criticism of democratic studies, which emphasize the importance of transforming political institutions and addressing the measure of the goodness of democracy that is considered to be generally accepted. As a result, the voice and interests of women are considered merely complementary and not a priority. Feminist agendas—marked by the formulation of interests aimed at challenging patriarchy in a variety of manifestations—are increasingly scarce in the work of fighting for democracy in Indonesia, especially in the participation of women’s electoral politics. While non-electoral participation is more indicative of the presence of a feminist agenda, the challenge lies in the lack of linkages with electoral politics. The achievements of democracy over the past 20 years show the lack of contribution of democracy to the struggle that the women’s movement formulated with the breath of feminism. This article highlights the increasingly eroded feminist agenda in the consolidation of democracy in Indonesia. It is time for the consolidation of democracy to borrow the logic of feminism, which rejects the public/private; personal/political dichotomy; in the electoral/non-electoral political struggle.
