Abstract

Psychology has long been accepted by many scholars as a science. Nevertheless, intensive readings on philosophy of science and psychology in Indonesia are rarely found. Meanwhile, there are not many professional psychologists nor psychology scientists deliver a course on Philosophy of Science in the faculties and study programs of psychology. The common argument proposed is that both psychologists and lecturers on psychology are not well qualified nor confident enough to teach the Philosophy of Science subject, as if the subject "is only taught" by philosophers or alumni of philosophy department. This phenomenon depicts that there are two worlds: the psychology world and the "other world", philosophy. This straight differentiation is certainly both unnecessary and dangerous as philosophy of science is indeed inherent in any psychological discussions. This article proposed that philosophy of science is a holistic base for the development of psychology and that the relationship between philosophy of science and psychology is close and tight. Psychologists are expected to take more part in inquiring assumptions and values in psychology and thus the simplification of psychology as a technical psychodiagnostic could be avoided.

Abstract

By cooperating with Yayasan Komodo Kita and Mandiri Bank, English department of Binus University was chiefly in charge of a 15 day Training Of Trainers (TOT) program for 24 participants prepared for teaching English in Labuan Bajo, Flores. The training was aimed to prepare already fluent- in ? English- teachers, tour guides, and university graduates with the right tools and method in teaching English. To assess the program, a set of evaluation questionnaire was given to the participants to know their responses on the training material, the trainers, and the program by using Likert?s scale type questions. An observational record was also used as a tool to measure participants? achievement. The questionnaire reveals that the participants respond positively to the program and the material and favor the approaches made by the trainers during the training. However, the training shows various results in participants? performance. It is assumed that the non teaching background of the majority of participants and the level of English as two key factors influencing their performance.

Abstract

By developing an understanding on leprosy issues in social-community perspective, we will be more understanding to leprosy and many others. This is still a paramount in developing and building character especially in leadership context in modern Indonesia society. Good Interpersonal relationship always starts from self awareness, and then it could be developing among the men and women especially marginalized people in our society. Finally we could eliminate stigma and discrimination for people affected by leprosy promptly. The writer used the qualitiative method, with the aim of this research focuses on how to develop Nation Character Building based on our Founding Fathers Vision and make it down to earth to be our daily habits, appreciating and fair enough for every people and avoiding stigma and discrimination to anyone including people with disability and people affected by leprosy.

Abstract

This article tries to explore the usage of vocabulary learning strategies in second language learning on students with different background. It attempts to elicit useful ideas and gives a practical guidance in learning Chinese as a second language. This work explains how learning environment, cultural background and proficiency level can highly affect the choice of learning strategies. And even though students are learning different languages, there are similarities in their choice of strategies during the process of acquiring the target language.

Abstract

In the early stages of designing a design, sketch is an initial beginning of the creation of a powerful idea. Preliminary sketch forms structured or free lines to try to catch an idea or a model that will be realized in the design or picture. The process behind the stunning design starts from a dot and lines to the structure and expanded into a variety of alternative designs. The role of a line is often underestimated and exacerbated by the increasingly rapid development of technology, which makes people lazy to explore manually. The strength of line/scratch built through a continuous training process produces bold, spontaneous, and characterized lines.

Abstract

Bina Nusantara (Binus) University as education organization has to improve itself to realize its motto ?People, Innovation, Excellence?. That?s why Binus University have to implement the open system. By open system, BINUS University realizes practicability, flexibility, and openess. If it is done, BINUS University can guarantee to achieve its goal effectively and efficiently. Because of this, system approach is very important for the students as leaders in the next day who understand and make solution in overcome the complexity of problems in their organization. Everyone realizes that there is no problem like an island in itself. The problem is always linked with others. That?s why, the problem should be understood as a system which has some sub-systems. And every problem should be overcome by system approach, which accomodate wholistic approach and understand multifactors in it. In the learning process, assignment model used makes it effective or not in the system management, especially in education system in BINUS UNIVERSITY. By this reason, Eriksen?s ?Authentic Leadership: Practical Reflexivity, Self-Awareness, and Self-Authorship? (2009) very inspires the writer.

Abstract

This article aimed to see the perspective of lecturers and students regarding the factors influencing people?s metaphor competence in daily life. Twenty-one students were interviewed and ten lecturers were sent a questionnaire asking about the factors that might influence the use of metaphors. The results show that both lecturers and students agree that language mastery is not the only one which determines the ability of people in comprehending and producing metaphors. Other non-linguistic factors such as habits, environment, personality, social network, logical thinking and general knowledge also influence people. The respondents propose that metaphors are to be taught to students not only in language subjects but also in other subjects such as Character Building or other social subjects.

Abstract

Typography is now no longer considered as a science application on flat dimensions. Beyond the flat dimension, it is now often found not only in the form of dots, colors, lines, textures, Shapes and forms, but also thrived on typography users. Typography was used to deliver the message, through the formation of the language contained writings as title, subtitle, to captions on television media, but is now also used by other disciplines to deliver messages more readable than using other design elements. The purpose of this paper is to see the application of typography on the form, and how it can be delivered in addition to communicating the message letters by letters that can be strung into words, symbols, but in form. Typography was enjoyed so far for only words by words containing in newspapers, magazines, posters, flyers, brochures, etc., but now it can be enjoyed through out the media to the extent shapes, which also maximizes the delivery of messages. The character selecting skill which is adjusted in media and the message is one of new factors, because media controlling and materials are crossing disciplines of Visual Communication Design, which is in contact with the Product Design and Interior Design, which could work together to maximize the the message.

Abstract

Implementation of Corporate Identity has been increase enormously over the past 20 years and predicting will be increase higher in the future. Design Company will be the one who will get the big impact from these changes. Business world believes that corporate identity as important aspect to consider if they want to succeed and competed in their business. An important part of this article is to learn about corporate identity from the literatures and then apply that knowledge and the experiences gained to discuss the strategic implementation of a corporate identity within Design Company. Many companies especially design companies try very hard and seriously to develop a corporate identity of their clients other than their own. As part of the review, the concept of corporate identity, corporate image, corporate communication, corporate structure, corporate culture and how design companies implement and designing a corporate identity for themselves will be examined.

Abstract

The present study analyzed a profiling of hope of Indonesian badminton athletes with international achievements. Previous studies have shown that hope was positively related to various outcomes such as sports, academics, physical health, psychological adjustment, and psychotherapy. The participants were consisted of athletes used to play between 70?s and 90?s. This study utilized a qualitative approach with interpretative phenomenological analysis. Nine mental skills of athletes were used as a guideline of semi-structured interview. The verbatim of interview then was analyzed with hope components. Hope was constructed by three components: goals, pathways, and agency thinking. The analysis of participants? experience showed nine major themes that are: attitude, motivation, goals and commitment, people skills, self-talk, mental imagery, managing anxiety, managing emotion, and concentration, with twelve subordinates themes. These themes are similar with high-hope people?s characteristics.
