Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to estimate the Output Gap in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province using a Modified Hodrick Prescott (HP) Filter method by primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses quarterly constant-price RGDP data from 2010Q1 to 2023Q3. The Potential RGDP is estimated using a modified HP Filter with an optimal lambda value derived by minimizing the Generalized Cross Validation (GCV). An algorithm developed in R-Statistics software was employed to automate lambda optimization and potential output computation. Findings: The optimal lambda values were found to be 343 for total RGDP, 271 for the primary sector, 4438 for the secondary sector, and 989 for the tertiary sector. Overheating was identified during 2015Q1–2016Q1 due to a surge in mining activity, while the COVID-19-induced recession was observed from 2020Q1 to 2022Q2. The primary sector was most vulnerable during overheating, the secondary sector remained stable, and the tertiary sector was most affected during the recession. Research limitations/implications: As a univariate method, the Modified HP Filter may not fully capture structural economic shifts, especially in the primary sector. Further research using multivariate approaches such as SVAR, Kalman Filters, or production functions is recommended. Practical implications: Sector-specific output gap estimation enables more targeted fiscal and monetary policy interventions. Policymakers can apply contractionary measures during overheating and expansionary actions during recession with greater precision based on sectoral sensitivity. Originality/value: This study provides a novel application of a modified HP Filter at a regional and sectoral level in Indonesia, offering a valuable analytical tool for regional economic monitoring and policy development. Paper type: Research paper   Keywords: Output Gap, NTB, Potential RGDP, R-Statistics.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to analyse the variables that influence labour productivity in Indonesia, with a focus on the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth towards the Vision of Golden Indonesia 2045. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses panel data from 34 provinces over the period 2015–2022. The estimation model used is Feasible Generalised Least Squares (FGLS). The variables analysed include physical capital, human capital, trade openness, real wages, mobile phone ownership, and internet access. Findings: The results show that physical capital, human capital, trade openness, real wages, and internet access have a significantly positive impact on labour productivity. On the contrary, mobile phone ownership has a significant negative impact, indicating that the utilisation of ICT for productivity is still not optimal. Research limitations/implications: The research is limited to provincial-level data and quantitative ICT indicators, thus it has not captured the aspects of quality and user behaviour. Further studies can explore the interactions between variables and the long-term effects of ICT utilisation. Practical implications: The government needs to promote the equitable distribution of internet infrastructure, enhance digital literacy, and implement policies that can reduce the disruptive impact of ICT on workers, in order to optimise the potential of digitalisation inclusively. Originality/value: This research offers a new contribution by using provincial panel data from 2015–2022 and analysing the differences in the impact of ICT between the western and eastern regions of Indonesia, as well as explicitly integrating ICT indicators into the analysis model. Paper type: Research paper.   Keywords: Output Gap, NTB, Potential RGDP, R-Statistics.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of budget deficit, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the Human Development Index (HDI) on economic growth in the ASEAN-5 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines). Design/methodology/approach: The study employs secondary data covering the period 2014–2023 and applies panel data regression methods. The estimation is conducted using the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) to examine the impact of the independent variables on economic growth. Findings: The results indicate that budget deficit, FDI, and HDI, both individually and simultaneously, have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in the ASEAN-5 region. Research limitations/implications: The study is limited to the 2014–2023 period and only covers five ASEAN countries; therefore, the findings cannot be generalized to the entire Southeast Asian region. Future research is recommended to expand the variables and country coverage to gain a more comprehensive understanding. Practical implications: The findings highlight the importance of effective fiscal policies, the promotion of a competitive investment climate, and the development of human resources as key strategies for sustainable development in ASEAN. Paper type: Research paper   Keywords: Economic Growth; Budget Deficit; Foreign Direct Investment; Human Development Index.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze and rank the factors influencing food security in Indonesia under climate change, focusing on the role of variables such as temperature change, drought and land fires, pollution, floods, irrigated rice fields, number of farmers, agricultural GRDP, and number of markets. Design/methodology/approach: The research employs the Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method using the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation (PROMETHEE), applied to data from 34 provinces in Indonesia. Findings: The results indicate that 17 provinces have positive Phi values, reflecting relatively higher food security, while the other 17 provinces with negative Phi values show greater vulnerability to climate change. Research limitations/implications: The study is limited by the selected variables and secondary data availability, excluding external factors such as government policies, geopolitical conditions, and global market dynamics. This opens opportunities for future research to add new variables or apply the model at the district or city level. Practical implications: The provincial rankings provide a basis for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders in designing adaptive strategies to strengthen food security and prioritize interventions and resource allocation. Originality/value: The originality of this study lies in the application of the PROMETHEE method in analyzing food security in Indonesia, highlighting its novelty and importance in supporting sustainable national food security. Paper type: Research paper.   Keywords: Food Security, Adaptive Capacity, Climate Change, PROMETHEE.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the influence of the Poverty Gap Index (PGI), Human Development Index (HDI), and Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) on the growth of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in six provinces on Java Island from 2012-2024. The study also examines the simultaneous effect of these three independent variables on GRDP growth. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative approach was employed using panel data regression analysis. The sample consists of six provinces in Java Island over the period 2012 to 2024, with data processing conducted using Stata 17. Model selection involved the Chow Test and Lagrange Multiplier Test. Classical assumption tests included normality, multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, and autocorrelation. Findings: The results indicate that the Poverty Gap Index has a significant negative effect on GRDP growth. The Human Development Index has no significant effect on GRDP growth. While the Labor Force Participation Rate has a significant positive effect on GRDP growth. Simultaneously, the three independent variables were found to have a statistically significant joint effect on GRDP growth in Java. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited by its inclusion of only three independent variables and less detailed supporting literature for the Poverty Gap Index. This suggests that the model's explanatory power is limited, and GRDP variations are largely influenced by factors outside the model. Practical implications: These findings highlight the importance of policies that not only reduce the number of poor but also the depth of poverty through more targeted social assistance. Improving the quality of education and health is crucial for enhancing labor productivity. Furthermore, the creation of productive employment opportunities should be encouraged to optimize labor force participation. Originality/value: This research provides empirical contributions to understanding the relationship between the Poverty Gap Index, Human Development Index, and Labor Force Participation Rate on GRDP growth in Java Island from 2012-2024, addressing previous research limitations. The use of the Poverty Gap Index offers a more sensitive measure of poverty's economic burden on marginalized groups. Paper Type: This article is quantitative empirical research paper that employs secondary data and panel data regression analysis to examine the relationship between socio-economic variables and regional economic growth in Java Island. The approach emphasizes statistical hypothesis testing and the presentation of verifiable results, providing an empirical contribution to understanding the key drivers of regional economic growth. Keywords: Poverty Depth Index , Human Development Index , Labor Force Participation Rate , GRDP , Panel Data Regression , Java Island.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how openness to experience and learning goal orientation influence paradoxical leader behavior and the mediating effect of paradoxical leader behavior and the moderating effect of psychological capital on follower performance. Design/methodology/approach: This research is a quantitative research, using PLS-SEM data analysis. The sampling method uses purposive sampling. The respondents were 102 lecturers and administrative staff at universities who had subordinates. Questionnaires were distributed to collect data Findings: Significant results were shown by openness to experience on paradox leader behavior, as well as learning goal orientation on paradoxical leader behavior and learning goal orientation on follower performance. The results showed that paradoxical leader behavior neither did mediate openness to experience nor learning goal orientation on follower performance, Meanwhile, insignificant results were also shown by openness to experience on follower performance, and paradoxical leader behavior on follower performance. In addition, there was no moderating effect of psychological capital on paradoxical leader behavior on follower performance. Research limitations/implications: This study has limitations, as the population in this study only came from private universities in Indonesia. Future research could be expanded to include public universities or other demographic groups/sectors and adding other variables to deepen understanding of the relationship between these variables. Practical implications: The results of the study indicate that leaders and foundations at private universities need to develop a culture and create a work environment through rules and policies that emphasize learning goal orientation and openness to experience to encourage adaptive paradoxical leadership behavior. Employees who understand paradoxical leader behavior can see conflicting and competing demands as phenomena in the organization and can integrate various demands so that the contradictions between them can be productive. Originality/value: This research contributes to the implementation of Paradox Theory and Personality Traits in influencing the performance of subordinates among lecturers at private universities in Indonesia. This represents a research gap and is interesting because there is not much research on this topic. Paper Type: This article is a research paper examining the influence of openness to experience and learning goal orientation on paradoxical leader behavior, the mediating effect of paradoxical leader behavior, and the moderating effect of psychological capital on follower performance. Keywords: Paradox leader behavior; openness to experience; learning goal orientation; follower performance, psychological capital.
