Abstract

The title of this study is the syntactic behavior of the second verb (V2) in the Balinese serial verbs and it aims at investigating the types of verbs composing the Balinese serial verbs and analyzing the syntactic behavior of the V2. The theory applied in identifying the Balinese serial verbs is the theory of typology by Van Staden and Ger Reesink (Senft, ed., 2008), and the theory of complement and adjunct by Kroeger (2005) is used in analyzing the syntactic behavior of the V2. This research is classified as a descriptive-qualitative study. The data supporting the analysis was collected from written Balinese texts in the Balinese short stories. The result of the analysis showed that the Balinese serial verbs were formed by V1 stative-V2 intransitive, V1 intransitive -V2 stative, V1 intransitive -V2 transitive active, V1 active transitive -V2 active-transitive, or stative or intransitive, passive-active-transitive, active transitive-passive, passive-passive. Syntactically the V2 could be either complement or an adjunct of the V1.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the manifestation of situational contexts in the culture-specific pragmatic phenomena in the perspective of cyber-pragmatics. This is a qualitative research. The research data sources are authentic texts taken from social media captions containing situational contexts. The research data are elements of situational contexts found in the authentic utterances in social media captions. The research data are gathered using the observation method employing the note-taking technique. The gathered data are classified and typified to generate types of data in details. Then, the data are analyzed using the distributional analysis method and the pragmatic identity method. The distributional analysis method is used to analyze the linguistic dimensions of this research, while the pragmatic identity method, particularly extra-lingual identity, is applied to analyze the extra-linguistic dimensions of this research. The preliminary research results show that the situational contexts proposed by Geoffrey N. Leech need to be reinterpreted and redefined to adjust to the development of current situational contexts. Situational contexts are inseparable from the digital information technology because language is not immune from the impact of the technology development. Ignoring situational contexts in the perspective of cyber-pragmatics in studying language phenomena will not yield proper research results in the present-day contexts.  Keywords: cyberpragmatics, culture-specific pragmatics, konteks situasi, informasi digital

Abstract

Markers of the identity of a group can be seen from the language and culture. A group that lives in an area usually names its territory using their language and cultural characteristics of the place. However, heterogeneity in Indonesia society makes the naming of regions experience changes and shifts over time. This can be seen from the naming of the administrative area in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province. As a border area between Indonesia and Malaysia, the naming of administrative areas becomes necessary and important to be preserved as an identity marker. In this regard, this study explores the naming of administrative areas in Sanggau Regency. This study aims to describe the pattern of naming administrative areas as language documentation, explore identity markers in naming administrative areas, and preserve language and cultural characteristics in naming administrative areas. The research method is based on toponymy research with descriptive qualitative analysis. Data collection techniques using questionnaires and interviews. The research data includes the naming of sub-village, village, and districts in Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan Province. The research respondents were 50 people who were selected proportionally based on their language and ethnicity. In terms of language, the naming of the administrative area in Sanggau Regency comes from Malay, Dayak, Javanese, and Indonesian. Abstract
