Due to advances in smart grid, different communication links as delay, inter-trip and activation are used between relays to enhance the protection system performance. In this paper, the effect of inter-trip links on optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is analytically investigated and modelled. Moreover, an index is proposed to find the optimum locations for inter-trip link installation to reach the minimal fault clearance times under the selectivity constraint. Then a method is proposed to determine the candidate locations of inter-trip links and the associated reduced operating times. An Exhaustive search approach is also used to validate the efficiency of the proposed method. The method is simulated and tested on distribution network of IEEE 33 bus using the Power Factory software and MATLAB optimization toolbox. Genetic algorithm is used as an optimization tool to find optimal settings of relays. The results indicate the capability of proposed method in optimal protection coordination with optimum inter-trips.

In the universities where students have a chance to select and enroll in a particular course, they require special support to avoid the wrong combination of courses that might lead to delay their study. Analysis shows that the students' selection is mainly influenced by list of factors which we categorized them into three groups of concern: course factors, social factors, and individual factors. This paper proposed a two-phased model where the most correlated courses are generated and prioritized based on the student preferences. At this end, we have applied the multi-criteria analytic hierarchy process (MC-AHP) in order to generate the optimum set of courses from the available courses pool. To validate the model, we applied it to the data from students of the Information System Department at Taibah University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

An innovative technology that is widely used in many applications is the Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET). Discovery and maintenance of routes at MANET are important issues. Within MANET, broadcasting is used to discover a path within on-demand routing protocols. Establishing and maintaining a route periodically among the nodes is the challenge that requires the transmitting of control packets across a network. This state leads to the issue of broadcasting storms. Broadcasting control packets increase control packets overhead and decrease network performance. In this paper, we proposed a scheme called AODV-Velocity and Dynamic (AODV-VD) for effective broadcast control packets. The routing protocol for the ad-hoc on-demand distance victor (AODV) is used to implement the proposed AODV-VD scheme. AODV-VD scheme reduces both the excessive route discovery control packets and network overhead. Network simulator version 2.35 (NS2.35) was used to compare the proposed AODV-VD scheme to the AODV routing protocol in terms of end-to-end latency, average throughput, packet transmission ratio and overhead ratio.

This paper presents a new approach for solving economic dispatch (ED) problem with valve-point effect using a modified artificial bee colony (MABC) algorithm. Artificial bee colony algorithm is a recent population-based optimization method which has been successfully used in many complex problems. This paper proposes a novel best mechanism algorithm based on a modified ABC algorithm, in which a new mutation strategy inspired from the differential evolution (DE) is introduced in order to improve the exploitation process. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the numerical studies have been performed for two different sample systems. The results of the proposed method are compared with other techniques reported in recent literature. The results clearly show that the proposed MABC algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving ED problem with the valve-point effect.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v3i3.2518

Satellite image classification has a vital role for the extraction and analysis of the useful satellite image information. This paper comprises the study of the satellite images classification and Remote Sensing along with a brief overview of the previous studies that are proposed in this field. In this paper, the existing work has been explained utilizing the classification techniques on satellite images of Alwar region in India that covers decent land cover features like Vegetation, Water, Urban, Barren, and Rocky regions. The post- implementation of the classification algorithms, the classified image is obtained displaying different classes that are represented by different colours. Each feature is represented by a different colour and can be easily perceived from the image obtained after classification. The focus of this study is on enhancing the classification accuracy by using proper classifiers along with the novel feature extraction techniques and pre-processing steps. Work of different authors is being discussed in a tabular form defining the methods and outcomes of the respective studies.

Weed detection is a crucial issue in precision agriculture. In computer vision, variety of techniques are developed to detect, identify and locate weeds in different cultures. In this article, we present a real-time new weed detection method, through an embedded monocular vision. Our approach is based on the use of a cascade of discriminative classifiers formed by the Haar-like features. The quality of the results determines the validity of our approach, and opens the way to new horizons in weed detection.

With the rapid development of today’s communication technology, the need for a system capable to improve spectral efficiency, high data rates and at the same time can reduce inter-symbol interference (ISI) is necessary. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) meet all the requirements needed. However, the high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) has become its major obstacle. This paper is focusing on the development of Median Codeword Shift (MCS), which a new PAPR reduction technique with the capability to reduce the computational complexity of the system. This can be achieved through codeword structure alterization and bit position manipulation by utilizing the circulant shift process. The simulation results revealed that the proposed technique overwhelm conventional OFDM and SCS with 24% improvement and 0.5 dB gap from SCS. In fact, the proposed technique possess a lower computational complexity by reducing 16.67% of the use of IFFT block in the system in contrast with SCS technique.

This paper reports a novel method for designing a miniaturized microstrip antenna with DGS based on CSRR array which operates in the frequency of 2.6GHz for low band WiMAX application. The proposed antenna is designed using ANSYS HFSS simulation software. The antenna with optimized parameters is fabricated using FR-4 substrate of thickness 1.6 mm. The simulated and measured performances of the antenna in terms of return loss, directivity and radiation patterns are presented in this work. When Complimentary Split Ring Resonators (CSRRs) array are placed on the ground plane, the resonant frequency is shifted to a lower value and patch size is reduced .The measurements were taken and compared with the simulated results. The performance characteristics obtained from the measurements show that the proposed antenna is suited for WiMAX application at 2.6GHz.

It is very important in remote cardiac diagnosis to extract pure ECG signal from the contaminated recordings of the signal. When recording the ECG signal in the laboratory, the signal is affected by numerous artifacts. Varies artifacts generally degrades the signal quality are PLI, EM, MA and EM. In addition to these, the channel noise also added when transmitting signal from remote location to diagnosis center for analyzing the signal. There are several approaches are used to reduce the noise present in the ECG signal. From the literature it is proven that compared to non adaptive filters, adaptive filters play vital role to trace the random changes in the corrupted signals. In this paper, we proposed efficient Variable step size leaky least mean fourth algorithm and its sign versions for reducing the complexity. These algorithms shows that it gives low steady state error due to least mean fourth and fast convergence rate that is it tracks the input signal quickly because of its variable step size is high at initial iterations of signal compared to the LMS algorithm. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using SNR, frequency spectrum, MSE, misadjustment and convergence characteristics.
