Abstract

This paper presents a methodology based on two interrelated rapid prototyping processes in order to find the best correspondence between theoretical, simulated, and experimental results of a power converter controlled by a digital PWM. The method supplements rapid control prototyping (RCP) with effective math tools to quickly select and validate models of a controlled system. We show stability analysis of the classical and two modified buck converter models controlled by zero average dynamics (ZAD) and fixed-point induction control (FPIC). The methodology consists of obtaining the mathematical representation of power converters with the controllers and the Lyapunov Exponents (LEs). Besides, the theoretical results are compared with the simulated and experimental results by means of one- and two-parameter bifurcation diagrams. The responses of the three models are compared by changing the parameter K_s of the ZAD and the parameter N of the FPIC. The results show that the stability zones, periodic orbits, periodic bands, and chaos are obtained for the three models, finding more similarities between theoretical, simulated, and experimental tests with the third model of the buck converter with ZAD and FPIC as it considers more parameters related to the losses in different elements of the system. Additionally, the intervals of the chaos are obtained by using the LEs and validated by numerical and experimental tests

Abstract

Image processing and machine learning technique are modified to use the quality grading of soybean seeds. Due to quality grading is a very important process for the soybean industry and soybean farmers. There are still some critical problems that need to be overcome. Therefore, the key contributions of this paper are first, a method to eliminate shadow noise for segment soybean seeds of high quality. Second, a novel approach for color feature which robust for illumination changes to reduces problem of color difference. Third, an approach to discover a set of feature and to form classifier model to strengthen the discrimination power for soybean classification. This study used background subtraction to reduce shadow appearing in the captured image and proposed a method to extract color feature based on robustness for illumination changes which was H components in HSI model. We proposed classifier model using combination of the color histogram of H components in HSI model and GLCM statistics to represent the color and texture features to strengthen the discrimination power of soybean grading and to solve shape variance in each soybean seeds class. SVM classifiers are generated to identify normal seeds, purple seeds, green seeds, wrinkled seeds, and other seed types. We conducted experiments on a dataset composed of 1,320 soybean seeds and 6,600 seed images with varies in brightness levels. The experimental results achieved accuracies of 99.2%, 97.9%, 100%, 100%, 98.1%, and 100% for overall seeds, normal seeds, purple seeds, green seeds, wrinkled seeds, and other seeds, respectively

Abstract

This paper proposes an emotion detection method using a combination of dimensional approach and categorical approach. Thayer’s model is divided into discrete emotion sections based on the level of arousal and valence. The main objective of the method is to increase the number of detected emotions which is used for emotion visualization. To evaluate the suggested method, we conducted various experiments with supervised learning and feature selection strategies. We collected 300 music clips with emotions annotated by music experts. Two feature sets are employed to create two training models for arousal and valence dimensions of Thayer’s model. Finally, 36 music emotions are detected by proposed method. The results showed that the suggested algorithm achieved the highest accuracy when using RandomForest classifier with 70% and 57.3% for arousal and valence, respectively. These rates are better than previous studies.

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that poor performance of energy supply chains arises from incorrectly interpret feedback information and time delays between decisions and actions in energy policy. This paper assesses alternatives to improve performance of wind-power supply chain with transmission constraints that contribute to enhance response capacity of the wind industry to changes of energy policy. In order to test these alternatives, this paper used a simulation model with system dynamics (SD), taking as case study Brazil. The simulation model represents the main time lags and fluctuations that exist in the wind-power supply chain. Four simulation scenarios were proposed to evaluate changes in auction-based policy in wind industry of Brazil. The results are related to operational capacity, inventory levels and response capacity. This paper provides an analysis of different scenarios that contribute with synchronization of auctions policy, including transmission capacity constraints.

Abstract

This paper presents a second-order current-mode filter with three-inputs and single-output current using single voltage differencing current conveyors (VDCC) along with one resistor and two grounded capacitors. The design of presented filter emphasizes on the use of a single active element without the multiple terminals VDCC which is convenient to implement the VDCC using commercially available IC for the practical test. Also, it can reduce the current tracking error at current output port and can reduce the number of transistor in the VDCC. The proposed filter can realize all the five generic filter responses, namely, band-pass (BP), band-reject (BR), low-pass (LP), high-pass (HP), and all-pass (AP) functions from the same configuration under various conditions in terms of three input current signals. Furthermore, the natural frequency and quality factor are electronically controlled. The output current node exhibits high impedance. Besides, the non-ideal case is also investigated. The simulation and experimental results using VDCC constructed from commercially available IC can validate the theoretical analyses.

Abstract

Software evolution is one of the challenging issues in today’s business environment. It is necessary for the organizations, which make use of Information, and Communication Technologies will have to align their business processes to compete with global business. The existing large software systems (“legacy” systems) have never been built to cope with the current business requirement for their poor coding, design structures, logic and documentation. Moreover, Legacy applications have various problems such as lack of up to-date documentation, skilled man power, resources of the Legacy applications, and high maintenance costs. Even though the Legacy system is obsolete, it contains detailed business rules and in continuous use, because it satisfies the users' needs and forms the backbone of the information flow of organization. One of the possible solutions is to refactor or modernize those systems into a new platform. It is necessary to analyse the existing legacy system for better understanding the business logic and its functionalities. This paper analyses various techniques proposed for understanding Legacy systems in existence.

Abstract

Distributed data processing is a major field in nowadays applications. Many applications collect and process data from distributed nodes to gain overall results. Large amount of data transfer and network delay made data processing in a centralized manner a hard operation representing an important problem. A very common way to solve this problem is ranking queries. Ranking or top-k queries concentrate only on the highest ranked tuples according to user's interest. Another issue in most nowadays applications is data uncertainty. Many techniques were introduced for modeling, managing, and processing uncertain databases. Although these techniques were efficient, they didn't deal with distributed data uncertainty. This paper deals with both data uncertainty and distribution based on ranking queries. A novel framework is proposed for ranking distributed uncertain data. The framework has a suite of novel algorithms for ranking data and monitoring updates. These algorithms help in reducing the communication rounds used and amount of data transmitted while achieving efficient and effective ranking. Experimental results show that the proposed framework has a great impact in reducing communication cost compared to other techniques.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i4.5920

Abstract

This paper investigates the feasibility of Timed Efficient Stream Loss-tolerant Authentica- tion to serve security needs of Power Line Communication (PLC) system. PLC network has been identified as the ideal choice to function as the last mile network, deliver load management messages to smart meters. However, there is need to address the security concerns for load management messages delivered over power line communications. The ubiquitous nature of the power line communication infrastructure exposes load management systems (LMS) deployed over it to a security risk. Ordinarily, PLC network does not em- ploy any security measures on which the smart meters and data concentrators can depend on. Therefore, the need to provide a secure mechanism for communication of load man- agement system messages over a PLC network. In LMS, source authentication is of highest priority because we need to respond only to messages from an authenticated source. This is achieved by investigating suitable robust authentication protocols. In this paper we present modifications to Timed Efficient Stream Loss-tolerant Authentication for secure authentica- tion to secure messages for load management over PLC. We demonstrate that PLC can be used to securely and effectively deliver Load Management messages to smart meters, with minimal overhead.

Abstract

The explosive demand of broadband services nowadays requires data communication systems to have intensive capacity which subsequently increases the need for higher data rate as well. Although implementation of multiple wavelengths channels can be used (e.g. 4 × 25.8 Gb/s for 100 Gb/s connection) for such desired system, it usually leads to cost increment issue which is caused by employment of multiple optical components. Therefore, implementation of advanced modulation format using a single wavelength channel has become a preference to increase spectral efficiency by increasing the data rate for a given transmission system bandwidth. Conventional advanced modulation format however, involves a degree of complexity and costly transmission system. Hence, carrierless amplitude phase (CAP) modulation format has emerged as a promising advanced modulation format candidate due to spectral efficiency improvement ability with reduction of optical transceiver complexity and cost. The intriguing properties of CAP modulation format are reviewed as an attractive prospect in optical transmission system applications.

Abstract

The variability of solar irradiance which is caused by the weather conditions could result in the mismatch between the solar PV generation and the demand particularly in the microgrid context. This may lead to the detrimental effects of over/under voltage or over/under frequency. In this regard, this paper presents the laboratory set-up of a grid-connected PV inverter operates in islanding condition. To achieve this, a load control algorithm is proposed to provide the autonomous real time demand control that follows the PV generation to maintain generation-demand equilibrium requirement. The laboratory results show that the proposed load control algorithm can successfully address the voltage and the frequency violation in islanding condition, regardless of the variation of irradiance and power generated by the PV sources.
