Abstract

The study deals with the examination of the antioxidative effect of a Leucana leucocephala L. seed extract on diabetic rats induces with streptozotosin. The rats were divided in to 6 groups, each consisting of 5 rats i.e. group 1: normal, group 2: control (chlorpropamide), group 4: low dose of Laucaena seed extract 0,5/kg BW and group 6: high dose of Laucaena seed extract 1 g/kg BW. The malon dialdehyde (MDA) and superoxid dismutase (SOD) contents were analyzed by ANOVA and continued with the ttest. The result obtained shows that an increase of SOD could be observed by a Laucaena seed extract of resp 0.25;0.5 and 1 g/kg BW.

Abstract

Information related to cause, spreading, prevention, and symptomatic treatment of Handfoot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) has been compiled. It is a viral illness with a distinct clinical presentation of oral and distal extremity lesions characteristic. Most commonly, the etiologic agent are coxsackieviruses, members of Picornaviridae family, namely coxcackievirus A16 or enterovirus 71. The drugs used to symptomatic care are anesthetic agent, antipyretic, analgesic, antihistamine, antacid, and antiseptic agent.

Abstract

Som Jawa (Talinum paniculatum Gaertn.) is a kind of Indonesian herbs that has similarities morphologically and chemically to Chinese ginseng. Som Jawa known as Ginseng Jawa in traditional healing has been made into various forms. The famous form is made as wine. The research on acute toxicity and efficacy test of Som Jawa as stimulant have been carried out to make Som Jawa into Indonesian Ginseng. The methodology of toxicity test is according to Weil CS (1952) and the efficacy test is according to Turner (1965). The test result showed that the value of acute toxicity of Som Jawa is 32.22 (25.59-40.56) mg/10 g BW (ip mice). At the time of starting to sleep, there was a significant difference on Som Jawa 10 mg/40g BW dose administration to Heptamyl 1.56 mg/40 g BW (p=0.00). In the swimming time extract of Som Jawa 5 and 10 mg/40 g BW showed no significant differences to Heptamyl 1.56 mg/40 g BW (p>0.05) (mean=32.88 +11.6;39.77 +14.6; 32.33 – 15.9). Som Jawa (Talinum paniculatum Gaertn.) is safe based on acute toxicity test. Extract of Som Jawa could prolong the time of starting to sleep and improve fitness.

Abstract

Mushroom has been accepted as human food since ages or hundred years ago. Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is one of an edible mushrooms which has fiber, carbohydrate and protein higher than Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus). The nutrition of the fruit body and the stem has been analyzed. Comparison of the fruit body and the stem have been conducted for protein, carbohydrate, and the fiber contents. Protein content in the fruit body is higher than in the stem. However the fiber and the carbohydrate contents are higher in the stem than in their fruit body. The amount of protein, carbohydrate and fiber in the fruit body is 31.07%, 15.9% and 7.08% dry weight consecutively. And the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fiber in the stem 12.01%, 19.46% and 10.3% dry weight successively have been observed in this study. Combination of fruit body and stem would be good for human diet in the future.

Abstract

The transgenesis as part of biotechnology is expanding tremendously i.e in the pharmaceutical, medical and agricultural field. Thanks to transgenesis the amount and quality of the products for export could be improved. The United States and China for example with cotton and other agricultural products like maize, soy bean and rice. Transgenic research in Indonesia is conducted by Litbang LIPI, Balitbio Agriculture in Bogor, Intercollegiate Center and others, but assessed from the national viewpoint there exist no policy or priority research of transgenesis in Indonesia. It is to be hoped that in the near future in Indonesia such a regulation and policy concerning transgenesis exist, in order to protect the consumer from imported transgenic products.

Abstract

Immobilization of Cd-(II) in production technology of indium medical radioisotopes (lll In or 115min) by means of 112Cd (p, 2n) 11 In or 114Cd (n,y) 115Cd 115mIn nuclear reaction is an important step regarding to the quality of the produced radioactive indium and efficiency of the utilization of the enriched targets (112Cd or 114Cd). The phenomena and capacity of Cd-(II) immobilization were studied using two kinds of inorganic oxide resins, i.e. titanium oxide and zirconium oxide. The aim of this study is gaining experimental data supporting the utilization of the resins in the production of 111In and 115min. The immobilization of Cd-(II) was proceeded by treating standard solutions of Cd-(II) with the resins followed by measurement of Cd-(II) content of the treated solution before and after treatment. The separation of the treated Cd-(II) solution from the resin was performed by means of centrifugation, while the measurement of Cd-(II) was performed by means of Ultra Violet spectrophotometry. The ready-used titanium oxide from Merck did not bind Cd-(II) even after being treated with several kinds of activating media. Zirconium oxide synthesized from the reaction of ZrOCI,. 8H,O with a basic solution of NaOH was in the form of the hydrate compound formulated as ZrO. nH,O with the value of n=(1.7034 +0.0186) and showed a capability to bind Cd-(II) higher than that of zirconium oxide synthesized with a basic solution of NH,OH or of the ready-used ZrO2. In general the Cd-(II)-binding capacity of Zro, tends to decrease with increasing of the amount of Zro.

Abstract

Transgenics plant is a plant that is produced by genetic engineering process. This product still creates polemic, because its impact still not certain yet, for human and environment. European countries seem to be careful in distributing or to importing this product, but United State actively promote and produce this plant. In order to develop and to protect it's country, US has prepared regulations, policy and institutions. Regulation should be prepared in Indonesia, as well as policies and institutions, because this product has been distributed and consumed largely. In addition, this regulations and policy are important for research activities. This review discusses about transgenic development, and government policies for the development of transgenics technology in Indonesia.

Abstract

The media components and fermentation conditions play an important role for the result of fermentation processes, for instance nitrogen is one of the element which is influence for the growth of microorganism. Therefore it is needed the available media formulation for the optimal growth of microorganism with high productivity. It was shown in this protease production experiment by using Bacillus megaterium DSM 319 with media of Geolitti Cantoni (G&C) with modified of urea as source of nitrogen. The variation of carbon and nitrogen ratio which are used in this process are 3 : 0.8, 3: 1.5,3 :2,3: 2.5. Fermentation conditions were adjusted : temperature at 37°C, pH 7.5 and agitation of 250 rpm. The result of this process indicated that carbon and nitrogen ratio of 3 : 2 giving highest enzyme activity at 18 hours. The other results such are specific activity 6.552 Unit / protein mg, specific growth rate (u max/h) 0.074, duplication time (t jam) 9.367, coeffisient convert (Yx/s) 0.23.

Abstract

Malaria remains the most devastating infectious parasitic disease, inflicting both death and economic losses on at least half the world's population. Numerous attempts have been made to control the disease using vector control measures and/or chemoprophylaxis. Antimalarial drugs have a selective action on the different phases of the parasite life cycle. Mechanism of antimalarial drugs action will be discussed in this article.
