Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results from insulin secretion disorder, insulin action or both. SUR1 gene is part of KATP channel in the pancreatic β-cell that plays an essential role related with cell membrane depolarization and glucose-induced insulin secretion. The polymorphism p.R1273R of SUR1 gene, causes KATP channel failed to give feedback to metabolic activation, failed of closing KATP channel, reduces insulin secretion, impaired glucose tolerance, and causes type 2 diabetes. This is case-control study using 80 subjects consist of 40 subjects with type 2 diabetes as case and 40 subjects of non diabetes as control. The SUR1 gene p.R1273R polymorphism genotyping were detected by PCRRFLP. Data were statistically analyzed by t-test, Chi-Square. The genotype frequency distribution of p.R1273R SUR1 gene in type 2 diabetes subjects were 90% of GG genotype and 10% of AG genotype. In non diabetes subjects, GG genotype was 87,5% and AG genotype was 12.5%. In type 2 diabetes and non diabetes subjects the AA genotype was not observed. The allele frequency distribution in type 2 diabetes subjects G allele was 95% and A allele was 5%, in non diabetes subjects G allele was 93.75% and A allele was 6.25%. All the genotype and allele frequency distributions in type 2 diabetes and non diabetes subjects were not statistically significant (p = .723 genotype frequency; p = 0.732 allel frequency).

Abstract

Aglaia elliptica Blume is one of plants that contain cyclopenta[b] tetrahydrobenzofuran compound with strong cytotoxic effect on various types of cancer cell lines. The objective of this study is to determine the inhibition effect of ethanol extract of A. elliptica leaves on mammary tumor growth in Sprague Dawley female rats induced by 7.12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). The study was conducted with induction of 50 female rats with DMBA at a dose of 20 mg/kg orally for 11 times. Twenty-five female rats suffering mammary tumor were divided into 5 groups. Three groups were treated with ethanol extract at a dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/200 g BW one day after the tumor appeared for 30 days, 1 group as a negative control and 1 group as a positive control (doxorubicin 2 μg/200 g BW). The results showed that the induction of DMBA resulting tumor incidence by 74% and tumor multiplicity of 2 nodules/rat. Histopathological analysis of mammary tumor, suggested that the carcinogenesis has reached the level of ductal carcinoma invasive (DCIV). The administration of ethanol extract at dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/200 g BW suppressed the growth of mammary tumor volume by 30 %, 33.5% and 37.4%, respectively.

Abstract

The aims of the study were to investigate the effect of cream containing various concentrations of snakehead fish on the duration of wound recovery and skin histology as compared to control. Samples of the study were nine rabbits divided into three groups for treatment, i.e. group I (0.5%), group II (1%), and group III (2%). Each rabbit in each group was wounded with scalpel as wide as 4 cm2 on the left and right dorsal thigh. Wound on the left dorsal was applied with snakehead fish cream (accordingly to each concentration) and the right dorsal with basic cream as control. The observations were carried out on day 3, day 6 and day 12 by measuring the wound size and taking picture of the wounded area. On the day 12, skin incision were performed on each group to observe histopathology. The data were analyzed statistically by the SPSS 15 program of repeated measures test. The results indicated that group III (2%) had significant effect on wound recovery by decreasing the wound size every day (p < 0.05). The results were confirmed by observing the skin histopathology, indicating that cream containing 2% snakehead fish could faster improve the tissue granulation as compared to the 0,5% and 1% concentration. It can be concluded that the application of 2% snakehead fish cream for 12 days can accelerate the wound recovery.

Abstract

Classification technique has already been applied widely in the medical data. One of its applications is for classification of cancer. The accuracy of this technique highly depends on the type of data to be processed (whether the data are separable or non-separable) and the dissimilarity function used. To surmount those hindrances and to improve the accuracy of classification therefore a method named Fuzzy Kernel K-Medoids (FKKM). The method can be used for separable or non separable of data. Based on the research on the concentration data of Zn, Ba, Mg, Ca, Cu, and Se in blood in order to diagnose cancer, FKKM gives better result than the Support Vector Machines Method. This paper will discuss an application of the FKKM method on the concentration data of Zn, Ba, Mg, Ca, Cu, and Se in blood samples and compared with the Support Vector Machines Method for the diagnosis of cancer. Results showed that the FKKM method produced a better result than the Support Vector Machines Method.

Abstract

Isoprenoid-substituted flavonoids were isolated from the wood of Artocarpus heterophyllus bybiologically activity-guided fractionation, namely antioxidant. The isolated compounds are cudraflavoneC, kuwanon C, norartocarpin, albanin A and artocarpanone have more hydroxyl groups seem to bespecifically to scavenge H2O2. These experimental results demonstrated that each scavenging compounddifferent in its scavenge capacity toward different form of radicals.
