When ethnology was institutionalized, it became a politic of knowledge by the colonial power. Many of the texts and images were published in the form of monographs, maps, dictionaries and even Bible form. Ethnic identity was mapped. Today the construction of ethnicity is important. In Indonesia ethnicity is a sensitive issue. Bias, stereotype and interethnic conflict often happens throughout the history of Indonesia. Abstract

This paper examines the debate in 1941 between Dutch historian J.C. van Leur and Verhoeven on the so-called Mahan Theory of the sea power of the East Indie Company (Vereenigde van OostIndie Compagnie, VOC). Alfred Thaye Mahan, an American maritime historian of the nineteenth century, inserted the idea of a seapower state, which implied that the United Kingdom was an ideal maritime state for the strong structure and effcient work of its sea power. Verhoeven used Mahan’s category of seapower to suggest that the VOC was a naval power of the seventeen century. However, Leur criticized Verhoeven saying that he had missed to address the element of the period the term naval power began to be accepted as a theoretical category. This paper argues that the debate between Leur and Verhoeven is relevant today as to re-consider the concept of archipelagic country, wawasan nusantara, that Indonesia has adopted so far.

Abstract

In the modern history of the mankind, no type of sports has gained as a widespread popularity as football, or soccer, including in politics. This paper examines the policy of President Sukarno on the Indonesian football and the discourse of nation building during the 1950s. Sukarno was aware of the potentials of football and made it accordingly an inspiring source to bolster the Indonesian nationalism. However, this paper argues, the nationalism that spread out of the football was temporary in nature and euphoria in kind that it vaporized along the decline of the national team’s performances and achievements.

Abstract

Existing studies on the economic history of plantations have hardly considered gambir, (or cat’s claw, Uncaria gambir roxb.), as a marketable commodity. In fact, during the colonial time in Indonesia gambir was one of the export commodities that formed the core of the people’s economy. This paper examines some aspects of the growth and socio-economic functions of the gambir plantations in the West Sumatra region of Lima Puluh Kota in the period from 1833 to 1930. It argues that the production and the marketing of gambir as an export commodity excelled other commodities in terms of quantity in the early period under study. However, the fact that gambir continued to be exported as a raw material made the decline of its popularity compared to other commodities such as coffee and pepper.
