Abstract

This paper presents a novel converter configuration with fewer for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive. The proposed novel converter insists for less number of switches compared to conventional asymmetrical type of converter configuration for switched reluctance motor. Switch count reduction in converter reduces the losses, volume of heat sink, and number of gate drive circuits and thereby the performance of the system. Closed loop speed control of switched reluctance motor fed from proposed novel converter topology was presented in this paper. Performance of closed loop operation is compared to open loop system. Further the proposed converter for SRMT is evaluated with loaded condition and comparative analysis of no-load and loaded SRM is presented. The model presented is developed and the results are analyzed using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Closed loop performance of proposed novel converter fed switched reluctance motor drive is verified at fixed speed and variable speed conditions.

Abstract

Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is widely known as an effective learning algorithm than the conventional learning methods from the point of learning speed as well as generalization. In traditional fuzzy inference method which was the "if-then" rules, all the input and output objects were assigned to antecedent and consequent component respectively. However, a major dilemma was that the fuzzy rules' number kept increasing until the system and arrangement of the rules became complicated. Therefore, the single input rule modules connected type fuzzy inference (SIRM) method where consociated the output of the fuzzy rules modules significantly. In this paper, we put forward a novel single input rule modules based on extreme learning machine (denoted as SIRM-ELM) for solving data regression problems. In this hybrid model, the concept of SIRM is applied as hidden neurons of ELM and each of them represents a single input fuzzy rules. Hence, the number of fuzzy rule and the number of hidden neuron of ELM are the same. The effectiveness of proposed SIRM-ELM model is verified using sigmoid activation functions based on several benchmark datasets and a NOx emission of power generation plant.  Experimental results illustrate that our proposed SIRM-ELM model is capable of achieving small root mean square error, i.e., 0.027448 for prediction of NOx emission.

Abstract

The output characteristics of the photovoltaic (PV) installation normally depend on solar radiation and ambient temperature, the charge impedance, its maximum power point (MPP) is not constant. In each state of the PV module has a point where it can produce its MPP. Therefore, MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) methods can be used to keep the photovoltaic panel running on its MPP. In this article, the objective was to determine how the different maximum point power monitoring (MPPT) techniques applied to PV systems work. Therefore, two MPPT algorithms are presented and compared under different temperature and radiation conditions: MRAC methods and sliding mode controller combined with the Incremental Conductivity (IC) algorithm. These algorithms are widely used in PV systems because of their easy implementation and low cost. These techniques were analyzed and their performance evaluated using the PSIM software under different types of solar radiation and temperature.

Abstract

The utilization of conventional sources of energy releases harmful pollutants to the environment causing global warming and acid rain. For that reason, it becomes necessary to use a non-depletable, sustainable and eco-friendly renewable energy as a mean of producing electricity. Malaysia is tropical country rich in resources beneficial in electricity generation as it is in equatorial region therefore it has an abundance of solar irradiance of average annually. In addition, Malaysia’s demand in electricity is increasing to 124,677 GWh by 2020. Therefore, the electricity generation from renewable sources in Malaysia is anticipated to grow in the future alongside the government endorsement due to its clean, eco-friendly and free source of energy which can highly reduce the dependency on oil and gas that emits harmful pollutants to the environment. This paper gives a comprehensive review on the renewable projects and researches in Malaysia, challenges that affect popularity of renewable energy in Malaysia and available and successful renewable energy system in Malaysia.

Abstract

Frequency analysis of processes in the frequency-controlled induction motor drive s, as in automatic control systems with dynamic non-linearities, are presented in this paper. For the first time, dynamic formulas of transfer functions of a torque driver in an induction motor with frequency control, taking into account the slip and frequency of the stator voltage, are proposed. Methods for constructing families of frequency characteristics of such electromechanical systems with “frozen” but different values of the frequency of the stator voltage and slip are described. The frequency characteristics corresponding to these transfer functions are constructed in the Simulink application of the MatLab software. Based on results of the analysis the structural correction methods that improve the dynamics of such nonlinear systems are proposed. The nonlinear transfer functions obtained in this work made it possible to substantiate structural solutions that linearize frequency-controlled electric drives and significantly increase their efficiency. This paper is an example of how the initial complicated (but more accurate) interpretation of nonlinearity allowed us to find a new best solution to the problem of controlling a complex dynamic object.

Abstract

Minirobots which are under the field of miniature robotics, have a dimension of a few centimetres to even a few millimetres. Conventionally, these small sized robots are usually powered up by batteries. The batteries can take up a lot of space and result in a bulky system. Isolating the energy storage components from the robot itself can provide a good alternative to further down sized the robot. This can be done with the incorporation of wireless power transfer (WPT) technology. However, studies of small-size WPT are usually reported with poor efficiency. The objective of this paper is to present an efficient wireless power transfer framework for the minirobot by employing the resonant inductive coupling together with impedance matching technique. The theory and design process will be discussed. Then, a simple prototyping experiment was conducted to verify the proposed framework. Result showed 35% transfer efficiency had been achieved on a transmission distance of 0.5 cm. The proposed framework had also successfully powered a 4 watts minirobot prototype at about 16% transfer efficiency where its receiver coil was located 3.5 cm above the transmitter coil.

Abstract

Different techniques for monitoring the transformer condition are continuously discussed. This is due to the fact that transformers are one of the most expensive components in the power system network. Not to mention the cost to fix any failure occurred in the transformer that have becoming more expensive nowadays. Frequency response analysis (FRA) is found to be the best method to monitor the transformer reliability. This paper presents a continuation of study presented in previous paper [1]. The study performed a laboratory test to show that the response of a normal winding phase A can be affected by short circuit fault which occurred at LV winding phase a, b, and c. To further investigate, current paper performed FRA measurement and applied fault on all phases. The same procedure is repeated on a distribution transformer to verify the findings. This is to examine the effect of fault at winding of other phases to the response of measured phase.

Abstract

This paper proposes a Proportional-Integral (PI) control voltage tracking of Bridgeless Power Factor Correction (BPFC) Cuk converter.  In order to investigate the behaviour of different output voltages during overshoot, steady state and step response, P.I controller is designed to set the -42 V, -48 V, -54 V output voltages. The simulation results show that the proposed PI controller able to control the output voltage and achieve fast steady state and step response of BPFC Cuk converter.  When the value of output voltage increase, the overshoot voltage will become higher but the steady state respond will be faster. Furthermore, BPFC Cuk converter with P.I controller have low output voltage ripples.

Abstract

This paper presents a study analysis of a complete wind energy conversion system, the system based on a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG); a vector control with stator flux orientation of the DFIG is also used to control independently the active and reactive powers. A comparative study have been performed between the conventional PI controller and fuzzy logic control to investigate its dynamic and static performances. This research work involves the study of a phase in advance, to provide effective assistance, to all those who have to make decisions regarding the planning and implementation of wind energy projects. The main objective is to model the wind chain and the use of two types of strategies for the control of this generator to ensure a good regulation we started with the modeling of the wind chain then the modeling of the DFIG and then the use of the two strategies for the regulation of the latter .The complete system is modeled and simulated in the MATLAB/ Simulink. The performance and robustness are analyzed and compared by Matlab / Simulink .Simulation results prove the excellent performance of fuzzy control unit as improving power quality and stability of wind turbine.

Abstract

Partial discharge (PD) pattern recognition is useful to diagnose insulation condition. PD measurement data is commonly represented in phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) format. PRPD is useful as it provides a visible pattern for different PD source and various features can be extracted for PD pattern recognition. Shorter PRPD duration will enable more training data but the information in each data is less and vice versa. This works aims to investigate the effects of using very short duration PRPD data on the accuracy of PD pattern recognition. The results conclude that machine learning models such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are robust enough such that reduction of PRPD duration from 15-seconds to 1-second causes less than 5 % drop in the classification accuracy. However, this is only true for noise free condition. When the same PD data is overlapped with random noise, the classification accuracy suffers a significant reduction up to 19%. Therefore, longer PRPD duration is recommended to withstand the effects of noise contamination.
