This paper proposes a non-isolated soft-switching bidirectional dc/dc converter for interfacing energy storage in DC microgrid. The proposed converter employs a half-bridge boost converter at input port followed by a LCC resonant tank to assist in soft-switching of switches and diodes, and finally a voltage doubler circuit at the output port to enhance the voltage gain by two times. The LCC resonant circuit also adds a suitable voltage gain to the converter. Therefore, overall high voltage gain of the converter is obtained without a transformer or large number of multiplier circuit. For operation in buck mode, the high side voltage is divided by half with capacitive divider to gain higher step-down ratio. The converter is operated at high frequency to obtain low output voltage ripple, reduced magnetics and filters. Zero voltage turn-on is achieved for all switches and zero current turn-on and turn-off is achieved for all diodes in both modes i.e., buck/boost operation. Voltage stress across switches and diode is clamped naturally without external snubber circuit. An experimental prototype has been designed, built and tested in the laboratory to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

This paper presents the comparative performances of Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) for the three-phase induction motor. Recently, the interest of widely used the induction motor at industries because of reliability, ruggedness and almost free in maintenance. Thus, the IFOC scheme is employed to control the speed of induction motor. Therefore, P and PI controllers based on IFOC approach are analyzed at differences speed commands with no load condition. On the other hand, the PI controller is tuned based on Ziegler-Nichols method by using PSIM software which is user-friendly for simulations, design and analysis of motor drive, control loop and the power converter in power electronics studies. Subsequently, the simulated of P controller results are compared with the simulated of PI controller results at difference speed commands with no load condition. Finally, the simulated results of speed controllers are compared with the experimental results in order to explore the performances of speed responses by using IFOC scheme for three-phase induction motor drives.

This paper considers issues related to increasing energy efficiency in electric drives of pilger rolling mills, presenting kinematics of such mills, provides justification for the general load chart, presents the detailed review of reference materials on technical energy saving solutions, and suggests a math model of an electric drive with a field regulated reluctance machine. The paper suggests key methods of saving energy in electric drives of pilger mills, namely: kinematic scheme improvement; main energy drainers and ways of energy loss reduction in electric drives with direct- and alternate-current motors, energy-saving electric drive control profiles. The article compares energy-saving resources in electric drives with various-type motors (direct-current motors, synchronous motors, and field regulated reluctance machine), clarifies the scheme of energy-saving resource implementation, provides the qualitative evaluation of electric drive control method efficiency. The accent is made on high energy efficiency of the proportionate control of armature and excitation circuits and across the range of torque in electric drives of abruptly-variable-load mills. The highest economic effect is reached in the electric drive with a field regulated reluctance machine – by means of implementing the energy-efficient electromechanical converter and applying energy-saving control profiles.

The long established battery chargers are having many drawbacks such as prominent ripple charging current, less efficiency and bulky in size. To overcome these drawbacks of conventional battery charger, several charging circuits have been proposed and inevitability force to design a high-performance battery charger with small in size and improved efficiency. In this paper solar photovoltaic system based half-bridge series–parallel resonant converter (HBSPRC) charger is proposed for battery interface. The converter is designed to abolish low and high-frequency ripple currents and thus take full advantage of the life of secondary battery circuit. This is achieved by designing converter switches turn on at zero current and zero voltage with switching frequency greater than that of resonance frequency which leads to freewheeling diodes need not have very fast reverse-recovery characteristics. The performance of the power converters depends upon the control method adopted; in this work fuzzy logic controller is used for controlling the output voltage of HBSPRC. The fuzzy control scheme for the HBSPR converter has been designed and validated in hardware implementation of HBSPRC switching technique. From the results, it is found that the proposed battery charging system which reduces the switching loss and voltage stress across the power switches which increases the efficiency of the converter.

This paper presents the simulation between fuel cell model and interleaved DC-DC boost converter (IBC) using a constant voltage maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique. The main advantage of this method is it had the simplest algorithm and can be computed for the high efficiency IBC. The MPPT technique forces the fuel cell to meet the maximum power that the fuel cell can generate. To test the IBC along with the MPPT algorithm, MATLAB/Simulink simulation is carried out. This MPPT method increases the efficiency of power delivered from the fuel cell. The IBC has also chosen for its advantages of reduction of passive component's size, as well as reduced the current ripple that could affect the fuel cell stack. It is envisaged that the MPPT method of constant voltage gives a handful of help in designing a low cost and high efficient fuel cell system along with the interleaved boost converter chosen

This paper presents the combination of two different methods to perform the waveform analysis for PWM-operated inverter. The two techniques are Newton-Raphson method and Curve-Fitting as a PWM concept to operate PWM-based inverter, the proper solutions of switching angles can valuate the initial values by using the Newton-Raphson method with the wide-step calculation of modulation indices. The solutions are then compared using a curve in order to study the behavior. Then, the Curve-Fitting method is used to estimate the missing solutions between any points of wide-step calculation. This combination method can estimate the probable solutions that cannot be solved by Newton-Raphson method in a wide-ranging of the modulation index and reduce the calculation time. PWM-based inverter, which is obtained the switching angles by Newton-Raphson method and the combination of two different methods, is verified by the simulation results showing faster performance with improved Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) than both methods alone when compared the same values of switching angles.

This paper presents the simulation design of dc/dc interleaved boost converter with zero-voltage switching (ZVS). By employin the interleaved structure, the input current stresses to switching devices were reduced and this signified to a switching conduction loss reduction. All the parameters had been calculated theoretically. The proposed converter circuit was simulated by using MATLAB/Simulink and PSpice software programmes. The converter circuit model, with specifications of output power of 200 W, input voltage range from 10~60 V, and operates at 100 kHz switching frequency was simulated to validate the designed parameters. The results showed that the main switches of the model converter circuit achieved ZVS conditions during the interleaving operation. Consequently, the switching losses in the main switching devices were reduced. Thus, the proposed converter circuit model offers advantages of input current stress and switching loss reductions. Hence, based on the designed parameters and results, the converter model can be extended for hardware implementation.

This paper presents the harmonic reduction performance of proportional resonant (PR) current controller in single phase inverter system connected to nonlinear load. In the study, proportional resonant current controller and low pass filter is discussed to eliminate low order harmonics injection in single phase inverter system. The potential of nonlinear load in producing harmonics is showed and identified by developing a nonlinear load model using a full bridge rectifier circuit. The modelling and simulation is done in MATLAB Simulink while harmonic spectrum results are obtained using Fast Fourier Transfor. End result show PR current controller capability to overcome the injection of current harmonic problems thus improved the overall total harmonic distortion (THD).

This paper discusses the time-frequency transform based fault detection and classification of STATCOM (Static synchronous compensator) integrated single circuit transmission line. Here, fast-discrete S-Transform (FDST) based time-frequency transformation is proposed for evaluation of fault detection and classification including STATCOM in transmission line. The STATCOM is placed at mid-point of transmission line. The system starts processing by extracting the current signals from both end of current transformer (CT) connected in transmission line. The current signals from CT’s are fed to FDST to compute the spectral energy (SE) of phase current at both end of the line. The differential spectral energy (DSE) is evaluated by subtracting the SE obtained from sending end and SE obtained from receiving end of the line. The DSE is the key indicator for deciding the fault pattern detection and classification of transmission line. This proposed scheme is simulated using MATLAB simulink R2010a version and successfully tested under various parameter condition such as fault resistance (Rf),source impedance (SI), fault inception angle (FIA) and reverse flow of current. The proposed approach is simple, reliable and efficient as the processing speed is very fast to detect the fault within a cycle period of FDT (fault detection time).

Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) is very popular technique in industries due to its simple designing and structure, in comparison to the direct method since it requires flux and torque estimators. This paper presents detail calculation of all values needed for the development of an indirect rotor flux oriented induction motor model fed by a current-controlled voltage source inverter. With the calculated values for 1 hp 50 Hz 3 phase induction motor; an indirect rotor flux oriented model is developed using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results are outlined and discussed.
