Abstract

This paper demonstrated a step by step process in designing a solar powered charging backpack that is capable of charging a mobile phone efficiently. A selection of existing products available on the market were reviewed and compared to ascertain the cost, size, and output capabilities. Next, the solar cell types and regulators were compared and their respective merits were also investigated. The charging system was then designed and tested before being integrated with the backpack. The results clearly showed that the system managed to charge the mobile phone. However, it was found that the excessive power dissipation has caused the linear regulator to generate significant heat.

Abstract

In this paper, two kinds of observers are proposed to investigate torque estimation. The first one is based on a voltage model represented with a low-pass filter (LPF); which is normally used as a replacement for a pure integrator to avoid integration drift problem due to dc offset or measurement error. The second estimator used is an extended Kalman filter (EKF) as a current model, which puts into account all noise problems. Both estimation algorithms are investigated during the steady and transient states, tested under light load, and then compared with the measured mechanical torque. In all conditions, the torque estimation error for EKF has remained within a narrow error band and yielded minimum torque ripples, which motivate the use of the EKF estimation algorithm in high performance control drives of IMs for achieving high dynamic performance.

Abstract

A main source of current renewable energy is solar energy. This source of renewable energy can be converted to electrical energy using solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) earns for maximum energy extractor from PV panels by different irradiance levels. In this paper, overall efficiency of most two popular MPPT techniques utilized in PV applications are analyzed, these  algorithms are Perturb and Observe (P&O) and Incremental Conductance (INC). An analysis of the results for the algorithms based on MATLAB simulation for various changes in solar irradiance is performed. Results showed that the efficiency of P&O algorithm was higher than that of the INC, but to obtain the same performance for both, more concentrated calculations should be used for INC. In measuring the output power, current and voltage responses, the use of a solar array having constant and variable irradiations was employed as input for the algorithms. The output waveforms which were derived from a simulation run for the purpose of obtaining the algorithms response to changes in solar array irradiations were compared. In general, the consequences of the P&O algorithm are quiet good and adequate. However, there is a need to improve the algorithm so as to satisfy the requirements of face confident timing in addition to its rapid response so as to make its performance better than that of InCond algorithms.

Abstract

A reliable monitoring of industrial drives plays a vital role to prevent from the performance degradation of machinery. Today’s fault detection system mechanism uses wavelet transform for proper detection of faults, however it required more attention on detecting higher fault rates with lower execution time. Existence of faults on industrial drives leads to higher current flow rate and the broken bearing detected system determined the number of unhealthy bearings but need to develop a faster system with constant frequency domain. Vibration data acquisition was used in our proposed work to detect broken bearing faults in induction machine. To generate an effective fault detection of industrial drives, Biorthogonal Posterior Vibration Signal-Data Probabilistic Wavelet Neural Network (BPPVS-WNN) system was proposed in this paper. This system was focused to reducing the current flow and to identify faults with lesser execution time with harmonic values obtained through fifth derivative. Initially, the construction of Biorthogonal vibration signal-data based wavelet transform in BPPVS-WNN system localizes the time and frequency domain. The Biorthogonal wavelet approximates the broken bearing using double scaling and factor, identifies the transient disturbance due to fault on induction motor through approximate coefficients and detailed coefficient. Posterior Probabilistic Neural Network detects the final level of faults using the detailed coefficient till fifth derivative and the results obtained through it at a faster rate at constant frequency signal on the industrial drive. Experiment through the Simulink tool detects the healthy and unhealthy motor on measuring parametric factors such as fault detection rate based on time, current flow rate and execution time.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates a mathematical representation of Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells and hence panels performance. One-diode solar cell model is implemented to simulate the cell and extract the performance indications. The tested PV modules are BP Solar (60 Watt) and Synthesis Power (50 Watts), which are operating in a PV generation system in the University of Anbar - Iraq, College of Applied Sciences. The math model demonstrates Power versus Voltage (P-V) characteristic curves to depict and study various parameters with affecting variations in the PV array performance. The parameters include ambient and cell temperature degrees and solar irradiance (G) level which are the main elements to dictate the productivity of a solar system. G is represented by sun unit (1 sun=1 kW/m2). The outcomes of the simulation model characteristics curves have been compared with curves provided by the tested modules data sheets. MATLAB software has been used to simulate the model and extract the results. This paper also investigated photovoltaic simulation with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converter to evaluate hence predict the behaviors of the whole photovoltaic DC current generation using PSIM Power Electronics program. The model focuses on the basic components in PV systems; The panel and the DC-DC converter. The modeling outcome data will be used as a reference verifying the performance of the tested modules during the year seasons under the dominating dusty hot weather in western Iraq.

Abstract

This paper presents a study of the Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) powered by two matrix converters; one connected to the stator windings and the other connected to the rotor windings. First, the mathematical model of DFIM and those of the matrix converters are developed. Then, the vector control technique is applied to the DFIM. Fuzzy logic is used in order to automatically adjust the parameters of the PI controller. The performance of this structure under different operating conditions is studied. Particular interest is given to the robustness of the fuzzy logic based control. The operation of the DFIM under overload conditions is also examined.  Simulation results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink environment are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Efficiency, reliability, high power quality and continuous operation are important aspects in electric vehicle attraction system. Therefore, quick fault detection, isolation and enhanced fault-tolerant control for open-switches faults in inverter driving systems become more and more required in this filed. However, fault detection and localization algorithms have been known to have many performance limitations due to speed variations such as wrong decision making of fault occurrence. Those weaknesses are investigated and solved in this paper using currents magnitudes fault indices, current direct component fault indices and a decision system. A simulation model and experimental setup are utilized to validate the proposed concept. Many simulation and experimental results are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed fault detection approach.

Abstract

Torque calculation process is one of the major concerns for controlling induction motors in industry, which requires very accurate state estimation of unmeasurable variables of nonlinear models. This can be solved if the variables used for torque calculation is accurately estimated.  This paper presents a torque calculation based on a voltage model represented with a low-pass filter (LPF), and an extended Kalman filter (EKF). The experimental results showed that the estimated torque at low speed based on EKF is more accurate in the expense of more complicated and larger computational time.

Abstract

In this paer, the suggested topologies are gained by cascading a full bridge inverter with dissimilar DC sources. This topology has a several new patterns adopting the fixed switching frequency, multicarrier control freedom degree with mixture conceptions are established and simulated for the preferred three-phase cascaded multilevel inverter. In outstanding switching arrangement terminations, there are convinced degrees of freedom to produce the nine level AC output voltages with terminated switching positions for producing altered output voltages. These investigations focus on asymmetrical cascaded multilevel inverter engaging with carrier overlapping pulse width modulation (PWM) topologies. These topologies offer less amount of harmonics present in the output voltage and superior root mean square (RMS) values of the output voltages associated with the traditional sinusoidal pulse width modulation. This research studies carries with it MATLAB/SIMULINK based simulation and experimental results obtained using appropriated prototype to prove the validity of the proposed concept.

Abstract

This paper presents the power flow control between the main grid and the microgrid in low-voltage distribution network using H-bridge inverter. Controlling the real power flow in the line using the H-bridge inverter is investigated by implementing the line current control strategy. The feasibility of the proposed H-bridge inverter and its control strategy is validated by varying the line current reference. Hence, the H-bridge inverter will operate in its inductive or capacitive operation mode depending on the reference current value and the output of the PI controller in the control unit. The control strategy of the microgrid distributed generators has also been investigated in which P/V droop characteristics is applied to the power control of each DG in the microgrid. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is validated through simulations.
